Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. Brigitte Bardot on trial for Muslim slur

PARIS (Reuters) - French former film star Brigitte Bardot went on trial on Tuesday for insulting Muslims, the fifth time she has faced the charge of “inciting racial hatred” over her controversial remarks about Islam and its followers.

Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand the 73-year-old former sex symbol a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros ($23,760) for saying the Muslim community was “destroying our country and imposing its acts.”

Since retiring from the film industry in the 1970s, Bardot has become a prominent animal rights activist but she has also courted controversy by denouncing Muslim traditions and immigration from predominantly Muslim countries.

She has been fined four times for inciting racial hatred since 1997, at first 1,500 euros and most recently 5,000.

Prosecutor Anne de Fontette told the court she was seeking a tougher sentence than usual, adding: “I am a little tired of prosecuting Mrs Bardot.”

Bardot did not attend the trial because she said she was physically unable to. The verdict is expected in several weeks.

French anti-racist groups complained last year about comments Bardot made about the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha in a letter to President Nicolas Sarkozy that was later published by her foundation.

Muslims traditionally mark Eid al-Adha by slaughtering a sheep or another animal to commemorate the prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son on God’s orders.

France is home to 5 million Muslims, Europe’s largest Muslim community, making up 8 percent of France’s population.

“I am fed up with being under the thumb of this population which is destroying us, destroying our country and imposing its acts,” the star of ‘And God created woman’ and ‘Contempt’ said.

Bardot has previously said France is being invaded by sheep-slaughtering Muslims and published a book attacking gays, immigrants and the unemployed, in which she also lamented the “Islamisation of France.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MELBOURNE, Australia - Twelve terror suspects planned to bomb a packed sports stadium during the grand final match of the Australian Football League in 2005, a witness testified Tuesday.

Izzydeen Atik, a former associate of the suspects, told Australia’s Victorian Supreme Court that the stadium plot was postponed after police raided the suspects’ homes and seized their assets in June 2005.

Atik said alleged terror cell leader Abdul Nacer Benbrika told him about the plot and subsequent plans to bomb Melbourne’s Crown Casino during the Formula One Grand Prix and an AFL preseason match.

Benbrika, an Algerian immigrant to Australia, and 11 other men have pleaded not guilty to charges of being members of a terrorist group and related charges. Prosecutors say the 12 intended to undertake “violent jihad” in Australia, had discussed killing former Prime Minister John Howard, and identified railway stations and sports fields as likely targets.

Atik, a former religious student of cleric Benbrika, told the court he used stolen credit card numbers to buy airplane tickets and mobile phones for the accused men. He faces separate charges of credit card fraud.”

Rome, Apr. 15, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Representatives of the Al Qaida network have renewed their attacks on Pope Benedict XVI, in a message posted on the Islamic miliant web site al Hesbah.

The latest message from Al Qaida expresses continuing anger at Pope Benedict, who was denounced by the terrorist network in March for leading a worldwide “crusade” against Islam.

The message from Al Qaida also decried the electoral victory of Italy’s former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose People of Liberty party won a solid victory in national elections. (In a bid to end Italy’s “birth dearth,” Berlusconi’s coalition has announced plans to provide parents with a bonus of €1,000— about $1,575— at the birth of each baby.)

In related news, a Palestinian Islamic leader predicted that Muslims would conquer Rome, in a sermon broadcast on the Al Aqsa television network controlled by the Hamas movement. Yunis al Astal described Rome as “the Crusader capital,” but assured listeners that “Rome will be conquered, just as Constantinople was conquered.”

Turkey-Iran To Discuss Security Cooperation, Joint Military Operations Against PKK

Abbas Mohtaj, Iran’s deputy interior minister in charge of security, is expected to come to Turkey tomorrow or on Wednesday to discuss joint military operation possibilities against the terrorist PKK and its Iranian branch PJAK. Mohtaj’s delegation will meet with a group of top security officials led by Interior Ministry Undersecretary Osman Gunes.

A Turkish official said that Turkey and Iran have had significant security cooperation against the terrorist PKK for four years now, adding that 150 Turkish members of the terrorist group have been captured and delivered to Turkey by Iranian security forces.

Suspicious truck under investigation in Boston

Authorities are investigating a suspicious truck that was discovered leaking.

There were no permits for the truck that listed it had anything inside it that could leak.

The truck was last in the possession of two Saudi Arabian men who are now believed to be in New York City. The truck was to be shipped to Saudi Arabia.

The truck last came from the Chuckran Junkyard in Bridgewater, where there was a four-alarm fire Tuesday night.

Ship impounded crew arrested for net blackout

The UAE has impounded a ship allegedly responsible for damaging undersea cables that caused weeks of disruption to internet and international telecoms services across much of the Middle East and Asia in February.

Dubai police have arrested two sailors found on board the vessel, owned by an Iraqi company, and will refer them to Dubai Public Prosecution next week, UAE daily Khaleej Times reported on Saturday, citing a police source.

A second ship, thought to have been responsible for the cable damage as well, was also impounded, but has since been released after paying "huge" compensation to India's Flag Telecom, owner of two of the four affected cables.

Two intercontinental cables connecting Europe and Asia were cut off the coast of Egypt on January 30, followed just days later by breaks in two more cables off the UAE coast.
