:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. Coalition Troops in Afghanistan Capture Seven Suspects

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2008 – Afghan and coalition forces detained seven suspected insurgents Feb. 17 during an operation targeting Taliban support networks in Afghanistan’s Zabul province.

In Qalat district, the joint force searched compounds for an insurgent suspected of smuggling weapons, equipment and supplies for Taliban fighters. During the operation, Afghan and coalition forces found and detained the targeted insurgent and six others with suspected links to insurgent networks.

Military officials said troops wounded the targeted suspect with small-arms fire after he threatened coalition forces. The suspect was taken to a medical facility for treatment; the other detainees will be questioned about their involvement in Taliban operations and other illegal activities.

“The disruption of the Taliban’s supply infrastructure is a key facet to ending their violent extremist activities against the people of Afghanistan,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition forces spokesman.

Troops in Iraq Kill Nine, Capture 56, Destroy Terrorist Hideouts

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces killed nine suspected terrorists, detained 56 others and destroyed terrorist safe havens and training grounds in Iraq over the past four days, military officials said.
In Iraq today:

— Coalition forces southeast of Samarra detained two suspected terrorists, including an alleged leader of the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Jalam who is linked to kidnappings and terrorist financing. The suspect allegedly arranges meetings between senior leaders from Tigris River Valley terrorist networks.

— Troops nabbed two suspects during an operation in Mosul targeting an alleged senior leader for the al Qaeda networks in northern Iraq.

— Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the senior al Qaeda in Iraq commander in Baghdad who leads cells responsible for suicide and car-bombing attacks, and other terrorist activities. The suspect reportedly facilitates transportation for senior terrorist leaders in the area, military officials said.

In Iraq yesterday:

— Coalition forces captured a suspect with alleged links to senior-level al Qaeda members in Mosul near Ashura. The suspect reportedly commands a group of foreign terrorists and suicide bombers responsible for killing five coalition soldiers in a Jan. 28 attack. Troops killed one suspected terrorist and detained another in the operation.

— Insurgents fired a series of rockets on Victory Base Complex and West Rashid in southwestern Baghdad, killing five Iraqi civilians and wounding at least 14 others, and injuring two U.S. soldiers. Coalition and Iraqi quick-reaction teams swept the area and captured six insurgents at the scene of the rocket launch, military officials said.

— Coalition troops captured a suspected Iranian-trained “special groups” leader and detained one other suspect during operations to disrupt criminal networks in the Iraqi capital. The targeted individual reportedly was in charge of all special groups criminal elements in western Baghdad and supplied members with armor-piercing explosively formed penetrators and other munitions.

— Forces in Mosul captured two suspects, including an alleged military leader of the local al Qaeda in Iraq network. Reports indicate the targeted suspect previously served as a leader in the Beiji network, but was relocated due to recent coalition forces operations that have degraded the leadership presence in Mosul, military officials said.

In Iraq Feb. 17:

— Coalition forces near Khan Bani Sad conducted an operation targeting a senior intelligence leader involved in the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Baqouba. The targeted individual brandished a weapon with the perceived intent to fire on coalition forces. The assault force engaged, killing the wanted terrorist and an additional suspect.

— Members of a “Sons of Iraq” citizen security group killed two al Qaeda in Iraq members transporting homemade explosives and improvised explosive devices in Adhamiyah. Military officials said the members took appropriate measures by firing on a minivan that failed to reduce its “high rate of speed” while approaching a checkpoint. A coalition forces explosive ordnance disposal team determined the vehicle was being used to transport explosives.

— Troops conducted an operation in Sharqat targeting an alleged founder of an anti-coalition insurgent group tied to the leader of the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Beiji. Coalition forces killed a suspected terrorist and detained two others in the raid.

— Coalition forces conducted an assault on a suspected special groups finance network south of Baghdad, killing an armed suspect in self-defense. During the assault, troops discovered large amounts of Iraqi currency, military officials said.

— Troops caught seven suspects in Baqouba and southwest of Samarra during operations targeting associates of the regional al Qaeda suicide-bombing network. Coalition forces also nabbed an associate of the al Qaeda in Iraq leader who operates in the Jazirah area.

— Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the terrorist network in Kirkuk. Military officials said the suspect is linked to three high-ranking terrorists captured by troops in recent operations. Forces detained four additional suspected terrorists in the raid.

— Troops detained five suspected terrorists during two operations in Mosul targeting associates of foreign-terrorist and weapons facilitators, military officials said.

— Forces detained three suspected terrorists in western Baghdad, including an alleged weapons smuggler who specializes in transporting IED and car-bomb supplies in northern Iraq. Military officials said the individual is associated with another suspected car-bomb smuggler, who coalition forces captured Feb. 15.

— Coalition forces in the Iraqi capital nabbed an alleged senior-level car-bomb smuggler for al Qaeda in Iraq networks throughout Baghdad and north to Tikrit. The suspect is believed to be a direct associate of al Qaeda senior leaders in Baghdad and surrounding areas. Troops detained one additional suspect on site, military officials said.

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers captured a top lieutenant of Arkan Hasnawi, an Iranian-funded and -trained special group in northern Baghdad. The suspect is accused of attacking Iraqi and coalition troops with explosively formed projectiles and mortars and for kidnapping and murdering Iraqi civilians.

— Coalition forces in Abu Ghraib detained one suspected terrorist with alleged ties to the al Qaeda in Iraq network operating in Arab Jabour, military officials said.

— Iraqi and U.S. special operations forces detained a suspected terrorist leader during an operation in Mosul. Military officials said the suspect is responsible for improvised-explosive-device attacks against Iraqi security forces in the city and for distributing insurgent propaganda.

— Coalition air strikes north of Baqouba destroyed 17 structures believed to house al Qaeda in Iraq operatives and booby-trap ambushes and function as terrorist training grounds. Troops based the targeted structures on intelligence gleaned in previous operations, military officials said.

In Iraq Feb. 16:

— Coalition troops observed two men fleeing a targeted area northeast of Samarra near the Hamrin Mountains. The men failed to heed troops’ instructions to stop and instead continued in opposite directions. Coalition forces followed one, engaging and killing him. The other was found hiding with a pistol, prepared to fire at ground forces, who engaged and killed him, military officials said.

— Troops targeted an alleged aide to foreign terrorists who is associated with an al Qaeda in Iraq senior leader in Mosul. Coalition forces detained nine suspected terrorists and discovered a cache containing improvised-explosive-device materials during the operation.

— In a separate operation on the east side of Mosul, coalition forces captured an alleged leader of the city’s al Qaeda in Iraq network. Reports indicate the suspect is associated with several senior leaders in the area, including a judge of an illegal terrorist court system and the radical Taliban-like spiritual advisor for the city’s al Qaeda in Iraq networks, military officials said. The ground force detained one additional suspect.

“Musharraf, pro-Taliban party routed in Pakistan’s election”

This will only be bad news for the new Paki gov't. It gives breathing space to the Taliban/AQ who will increasingly work to take Pakistan over as well as try to ramp up operations in Afghanistan.

Yes and we don’t want the Taliban to have breathing space.
Breathing space only gives them time to regroup/restock.

First, Robina Butt complained about financial corruption at Syed Soharwardy’s Al-Madinah mosque.

Then Robina Butt claimed Syed Soharwardy made physical threats against her.

Then Robina Butt’s home was invaded, and she was beaten.

Her attackers shouted “”We come from Al-Madinah; if you ever talk anything about Al-Madinah . . . this is the first instalment.”

This is Robina Butt now.

Morocco: Police smash alleged terror cell, arresting 23
19 Feb. 2008

Rabat - Moroccan security services late on Monday dismantled what they described as an "important" jihadist terror cell operating in North Africa, the Moroccan news agency MAP reported. The cell's fugitive head was among 23 people arrested in the swoop. Members of the alleged cell were planning to carry out terrorist acts, MAP said. They included several politicians, according to the Moroccan website Hespress.

MAP named the cell's arrested head as Abdel Qader Belaraj. He was reported to have previously escaped after an earlier arrest. Investigators also uncovered connections between members of the alleged cell and armed groups operating abroad, according to MAP.

Mustafa al-Mutasim, secretary general of the Party for Civil Change, and the For the Nation party chief, Muhammad Marwani, were among members of the alleged cell, according to Hespress. The Moroccan authorities had barred the For the Nation party from running in the parliamentary elections last September.

Kosovo: Serbs burn customs and police stations at border crossing
19 Feb. 2008

Belgrade – Several hundred Kosovo Serbs set on fire customs and police stations at border crossings with Serbia on Tuesday in an eruption of violence after Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Local media reported that border crossings at Jarinje and Brnjak in northern Kosovo were set on fire in protest over ethnic Albanian policemen and customs officers taking charge of the crossing points. Members of the international police and military force (KFOR) looked on but didn’t intervene, the Serbian news agency Tanjug said.

Ten cars belonging to Kosovo and the United Nations police were also set on fire, but there were no injuries, the reports said. Kosovo police spokesman Veton Elsani said KFOR and police were rushed to the scene to quell the unrest. Kosovo's border crossings with Serbia have been manned by the UN administration (UNMIK) since the province was put under UN control in 1999.

NATO blocks Kosovo Serb links
February 19, 2008

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Kosovo -- North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops have closed the roads leading to border checkpoints Tuesday, cutting off the only link between northern Kosovo and Serbia, U.N. spokesman Besim Hoti said.

Earlier, smoke billowed from two posts separating Kosovo from Serbia and flames engulfed several U.N. vehicles set ablaze in protest against Kosovo's weekend proclamation of independence and anger over international recognition of the new nation. The attacks on U.N. border crossings showed the protesters' willingness to use violence to hold onto Kosovo - and could clear the way for Serbian militants to return to fight in Kosovo, a land Serb nationalists consider the cradle of their state and religion.

Kosovo has not been under Belgrade's control since 1999, when NATO launched airstrikes to halt a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists. A U.N. mission since has governed Kosovo, with more than 16,000 NATO troops and a multiethnic police force policing the province.

Kosovo seen as asset to Muslim world
February 19, 2008

Secretary General of the Organisation of The Islamic Conference, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu says that the organization is rejoicing that Kosovo separatists have declared independence views the new state as an asset to Islam.

"There is no doubt that the independence of Kosovo will be an asset to the Muslim world and further enhance the joint Islamic action," Ihsanoglu statement read. Ihsanoglu also offered "our solidarity with and support to our brothers and sisters" in Kosovo.

Kosovo is a Serbian province whose illegal declaration of independence was recognized by some Western states. Since 1999, Kosovo's ISlamic separatists have ethnically cleansed Christian Serbs in the province.

Europe's new jihadist statelet?
February 19, 2008

After Sunday's Kosovar independence declaration comes President Bush's stamp of approval for a Republic of Kosovo and the nod of the four major European Union powers: France, Germany, Britain and Italy.

In all likelihood, the result will be Europe's 46th legally sovereign government, with a population that is 90 percent Muslim. What is far less clear is whether a weak, perpetually dependent Kosovar statelet — and make no mistake, this will be a toothless, weak and impoverished state — is in the United States' best interest.

The answer is no. Lawlessness and terrorism are likely to fester inside Kosovo — which is rife with organized criminal gangs and plagued by corruption. Slavic resentments emanating from neighboring Serbia and Russian revanchism are a certainty. Much as the Bush administration and European governments favor independence, it creates new problems where old ones lay dormant,

Philippines arrests terror suspects
Tue Feb 19, 2008

MANILA - An Indonesian terror suspect and two Filipinos were arrested during a raid on their hide-out in the southern Philippines, military officials said Tuesday. Mohamad Baehaqi, an alleged member of the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah terror network, was arrested Sunday in Davao Oriental province after more than a month of surveillance, military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon told reporters.

Esperon said Baehaqi, 26, has been in the country since September 2003 and admitted he joined a group of key Jemaah Islamiyah operatives hiding and training militants in the Philippines. The group includes Dulmatin, also known as Ammar Usman. The arrests were announced as authorities reported finding remains in a southern jungle that could be those of Dulmatin, and DNA testing was under way.

Baehaqi allegedly acted as Jemaah Islamiyah's liaison officer with Filipino contacts in central and southern Mindanao, and an arrest warrant has been issued against him for multiple murders stemming from several bombings in the south, Esperon said. He had received training at a Jemaah Islamiyah camp in central Mindanao which has since been closed, officials said.

The suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" — God is great — when presented by Esperon to the media in Manila. Security forces often parade suspects in front of journalists. Esperon said Baehaqi was assembling a bomb when arrested and admitted during interrogation that he was involved in bombings in two cities and one township on Oct. 10, 2006, that killed more than a dozen people.

‘Candidates hire Taliban look-alikes as security guards’ (Pakistan)
Tuesday, February 19, 2008

BANNU: Many candidates in North Waziristan “hired” services of “security guards” who “looked like Taliban” on the polling day, eyewitnesses and officials said.

“They had long beard and hair and dressed like the Taliban. But they were not really Taliban men who generally fight the Pakistani security forces in Tribal Areas or the US forces in Afghanistan,” the eyewitnesses said, wishing not to be named. However, it was unclear who the highly armed men were, if not the Taliban.

A senior official in the agency said he saw armed men with a Taliban outlook roaming around. “These people were carrying heavy weapons like rocket-propelled grenades to protect candidates,” he said.
