“WMD Catastrophes”
By Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | Tuesday, February 12, 2008
INTERVIEW SNIPPET: “Wohlstetter: The Long War is a war against militant Islamofascist ideology in its several forms, one that it likely at minimum several decades in duration. It is a civilizational war of survival, but not Professor Huntington’s famous “clash of civilizations,” because our enemies stand only for death and destruction, while all civilizations, including the great Islamic ones, celebrate life and creation. It is, simply put, a war of survival between imperfect civilization and perfect barbarism. The Short War is a war of prevention, aimed at reducing to the smallest possible chance a successful WMD attack on American soil, or the soil of our allies.”

Troops Kill 2, Capture 11, Seize Weapons in Iraq
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2008 Coalition and Iraqi forces killed two suspected terrorists, nabbed 11 and uncovered weapons caches in Iraq over the past three days, military officials reported.
Coalition forces captured two suspected members of Iranian-trained and -funded special groups south of Baghdad early today.
During the operation, troops in the Suwayrah area of the Iraqi capital were searching for a man suspected of organizing paramilitary training for special groups members targeting Iraqi and coalition forces. Reports also indicate he was linked to several senior-level criminal leaders involved in previous strikes on combined forces.
Using credible intelligence, ground forces reached the target location, where they detained the two suspected criminals without incident. The suspects identities are undetermined so far, military officials said.
Since Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr pledged in August to suspend offensive operations against coalition forces and Iraqi citizens, military officials have recognized a decline in the number of attacks carried out by special groups members and other insurgents. But some of Sadrs followers, officials say, continue to betray the clerics commitment.
Muqtada al-Sadr’s cease-fire pledge has helped increase stability, said Navy Lt. Michael Street, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. We welcome that stability, but we will continue to dismantle the criminal networks of those who choose not to honor that pledge.
Southwest of Samarra today, coalition forces captured a suspect who allegedly deals improvised explosive devices — deadly homemade bombs — and other weapons on behalf of al Qaeda in Iraq. Military officials believe the suspect also is connected to a local car-bomb factory and several nearby weapons caches.
Reports indicate the suspect is associated with al Qaeda members involved in car-bomb networks, including individuals nabbed last fall for their alleged roles in terrorist attacks and foreign-fighter smuggling.
Troops detained an additional suspected terrorist in the operation, military officials said.
Iraqi and coalition forces are committed to ending the terror al Qaeda in Iraq has brought, said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. Al Qaeda’s war on innocent Iraqi civilians is the result of a twisted and morally bankrupt philosophy that runs contrary to the values of Iraqi citizens. These terrorists are unwelcome in Iraq.
In Iraq yesterday:
— Two terrorists armed with suicide vests engaged coalition forces with gunfire northeast of Samarra. Ground forces responded, killing the two. Troops also discovered two AK-47 assault rifles.
— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained five suspected terrorists in southern Ghazaliyah. The suspects, believed to be a part of a local IED network, were taken to a coalition forces detention facility for further questioning. The arrests were part of Operation Phantom Phoenix, a countrywide division- and brigade-level strike against al Qaeda and other extremists launched in December.
— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers captured a suspected special groups cell leader in the Rashid district of the Iraqi capital. Military officials believe the suspect has been involved in attacks against coalition and Iraqi forces involving IEDs, explosively formed penetrators, and small-arms and rocket fire. The arrest came a day after soldiers nabbed a suspected special groups leader in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Hurriya.
In Baghdad yesterday, Iraqi security forces found a house rigged with at least 11 IEDs. The house, located in the Rusafa security district of eastern Baghdad, was armed with 10 IEDs in the courtyard and one at the front door. An explosive ordnance team conducted an explosive breach before investigating further. The team found two doors booby trapped with wire, and discovered an anti-tank mine and three 57 mm rockets.
A military official on the scene said the explosives were rigged to target coalition forces entering the house. Neither Iraqi nor coalition forces suffered casualties in the operation.
Discovery of the booby-trapped house came on the heels of two coalition operations Feb. 10, when troops recovered and disposed of weapons caches across Baghdad.
Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Divisions Company B, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, found four IEDs and a munitions cache in the Arab Jabour section of the Iraqi capital.
Meanwhile, soldiers from the 3rd IDs Troop C, 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, found three weapons stockpiles in the Sayifiyah area. The cache contained various munitions, assault rifles, bomb-making material and al Qaeda in Iraq propaganda, military officials said.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080213-04

2nd Brigade Soldiers discover largest cache finds since start of Marne Thunderbolt
Multi-National Division Center
BAGHDAD Soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division found 3,000 pounds of munitions Feb. 6, collectively the largest find since the start of Operation Marne Thunderbolt Jan. 1.
Both the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment are conducting ongoing operations in southern Arab Jabour in support of Marne Thunderbolt.
Company C, 1-30th Inf. Regt. discovered 12 55-gallon barrels of homemade explosives. Company B, 1-30th Inf. Regt. found a pressure-plate improvised explosive device consisting of three 122 mm rounds and one mine of unknown origin. Another find yielded a cache of two mines, one 57 mm projectile, one jar of HME, one artillery shell filled with HME and one 155 mm artillery round.
We try to find out how long the munitions have been there, said Maj. James Wilburn, from Las Cruces, N.M., chief of daytime operations, 2nd BCT, 3rd Inf. Div. It may indicate whether there was a cell operating there recently, or if the weapons were abandoned long ago. It gives a sense of what our troops may be up against.
Soldiers from Company A, 5-7th Cav. Regt. discovered an anti-aircraft gun, completely operational, with an extra barrel.
Company B, 5-7th Cav. Regt. Soldiers found 45 cans of DSHKA rounds, one DSHKA barrel, 20 rockets, two 120 mm rounds, 90 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, 20 RPG fuses, 130 charges and four hand grenades. In a smaller find the same day, they located a cache of three 120 mm rockets.
The items found reveal a history of al-Qaeda in Iraqs presence in the area.
The stuff they are finding is largely inoperable, Wilburn said. Even though they are degraded or worn out, it is an indication that an anti-aircraft cell may have been operating in the area at one time.

Iraqi Hospital Chief Linked to al-Qaida

BAGHDAD (AP) - The acting administrator of a psychiatric hospital in Baghdad has been detained on suspicion that he played a role in supplying patient information to al-Qaida in Iraq, the U.S. military said Wednesday.
Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, a military spokesman, said U.S. and Iraqi forces arrested the man in his office Sunday and conducted a “thorough search” of the al-Rashad psychiatric hospital in Baghdad.
“Coalition forces detained a hospital administrator in connection with the possible exploitation of mentally impaired women to al-Qaida,” Smith said.
“The administrator remains in coalition force detention and is being questioned to determine what role if any in supplying al-Qaida with information regarding patients at the al-Rashad psychiatric hospital or from other medical facilities in Baghdad,” he added.
He said the man, whom he did not identify, was detained as part of the investigation into the Feb. 1 bombings of two crowded pet markets in Baghdad. He said he could not provide more details, citing the ongoing investigation.
U.S. and Iraqi officials blamed al-Qaida for the bombings and said the bombers were two mentally disabled women strapped with remote-control explosives and apparently did not know they were being used. Iraqi officials put the death toll at 99 in both attacks.
The U.S. military later expressed concern that al-Qaida was increasingly turning to women and children as suicide bombers to get around stepped up security measures.

“Knife hold-up in Italian nursery”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A man armed with a knife has barricaded himself into a children’s day care centre in southern Italy.
News reports said that at least a dozen children and a teacher were inside the centre in the town of Reggio Calabria.
The man has asked to speak to journalists and has made references to money and judicial sentences, Ansa and Apcom news agencies report.”
This is exceptional good news. However, it may trigger a hezzi retalitation strike. But it definitely may force them to reposture and take some pressure off Free Lebanon elements.
