:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. Troops in Iraq Kill Suspected Terrorists, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces killed three suspected terrorists, captured one other and found a weapons cache in Iraq yesterday, military officials said.

East of Baghdad, coalition forces targeted an al Qaeda in Iraq leader of the Bizayz terrorist network, which operates east of Khan Bani Sad. The suspect reportedly commands a large group of terrorists in the region, and is believed to be the brother of an alleged al Qaeda in Iraq associate detained by combined forces March 2.

Intelligence reports led troops to the targeted individual’s location. Upon arrival, the assault force observed three suspected terrorists in the target vehicle, which was leaving the area.

Troops attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to comply with their instructions. The assault force eventually fired on the vehicle to stop it, killing three suspected terrorists in the engagement.

“(Al Qaeda in Iraq’s) corrupt, Taliban-like ideology and indiscriminate violence cannot be tolerated, and Iraqi and coalition forces will continue to disrupt their networks in an ongoing effort to improve security across Iraq,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.

Elsewhere in Iraq yesterday, Multinational Division North soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, detained a cell leader as he attempted to flee from his home in Kirkuk. The man was responsible for a recent improvised-explosive-device attack on the soldiers, military officials said. Near his home, troops found weapons, ammunition and other equipment. Local citizens thanked the soldiers following the operation.

“It was great catching one of the criminal leaders responsible for the attack on my platoon,” said Army 1st Lt. Dan Keslar. “It was equally satisfying when we were thanked by local villagers for detaining this individual. When this happens, you know you are making a difference.”

Coalition Focuses on Clearing Mosul Terrorist Networks

By Seaman William Selby, USN
Special to American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2008 – Coalition forces are targeting a foreign-terrorist-facilitator network in Mosul, Iraq, a senior military official said yesterday.

“Mosul is the strategic center of gravity for al Qaeda,” Air Force Col. Donald Bacon, chief of special operations and intelligence information for Multinational Force Iraq, said during a conference call with online journalists and “bloggers.”

Bacon said Mosul is an important target because it is a financial junction and hub for foreign terrorists. “Our assessment is that (al Qaeda) can’t survive without the networks in Mosul,” he said.

Ninevah province, where Mosul is located, is the only Iraqi province in which the violence level has not significantly decreased in recent months, Bacon said. “On any given day, about half to two-thirds of the attacks in Iraq are in and around Mosul,” he explained.

Since intensifying operations in Ninevah in January, coalition forces have captured or killed 142 terrorists in Mosul itself, he said, including al Qaeda military leaders.

“On 18 February, we were able to capture the al Qaeda military leader of Mosul,” Bacon said. “He oversaw all of al Qaeda’s operations in Mosul.”

He said the captured leader’s name has not been released, but intelligence gathered from this prisoner enabled coalition forces to successfully target and kill Jar Allah, also known as Abu Yasir al-Saudi, a native of Saudi Arabia who led the al Qaeda network in southeastern Mosul.

Allah and another Saudi national named Hamdan were killed by coalition forces Feb. 27 when a precision helicopter strike destroyed their vehicle in a low-risk area, Bacon said.

“We also assessed and analyzed that (Jar Allah) had the most aggressive and most active of the networks in Mosul,” Bacon said. “In fact, we found that he was responsible for the roadside-bomb attack that killed coalition force soldiers on the 28th of January.”

Bacon also reported that the number of insurgent attacks has significantly decreased in 17 of the 18 Iraqi provinces since June, with Ninevah being the exception.

Bacon attributed the decrease in violence in much part to security efforts by concerned local citizens groups, otherwise known as “Sons of Iraq.” “(The Sons of Iraq) find most of our weapons caches,” he said, “so they’re getting tons of weapons that otherwise al Qaeda would have access to.”

The Sons of Iraq also make it difficult for al Qaeda to get back into villages the coalition has cleared, Bacon added.

Bacon acknowledged there has been some tension with the Sons of Iraq, citing an incident in Diyala province where concerned citizens walked off the job in protest of an Iraqi police leader in the area. The issue was resolved peacefully, he said, and the protestors have all returned to the job in the past week.

Bacon noted that the concerned citizens were able to voice their concern to Iraqi leadership. “Living in a democracy, they should be able to do that,” he said.

Despite recent trends showing lower violence levels throughout most of Iraq, Bacon said, al Qaeda is still a significant threat. “It’s going to be a continuous fight, where we just keep chipping away at them,” he said. “We’re going to continue putting bases in the neighborhoods and continue to try to root out the (al Qaeda) leadership as we find it,” Bacon said, “and go after the (al Qaeda) networks, as well as the foreign terrorist networks.”

“Senator Schumer: TSA is Inadequate”
By Annie Jacobsen in category U.S. Homeland Security

BLOG ENTRY SNIPPET: “The ABC News piece says 8,000 foreign nationals have trained in U.S. flight schools without proper vetting. ABC cites former TSA officials as well as former FAA inspectors as sources. The internal memos it posts on its website paint an unsettling portrait of a a few USG officials trying to sound the alarm but their concerns fall on deaf ears.

TSA responded by saying only 857 foreign students slipped though the cracks.

Question: How many foreign nationals does it take to fly planes into buildings?

Answer: 19.”

Mexican national admits to assaulting border agent
The Monitor ^ | March 4, 2008 | Jeremy Roebuck
Posted on 03/04/2008 3:03:35 PM PST by SwinneySwitch

McALLEN — A 28-year-old Mexican national pleaded guilty Monday to assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent last year during a failed arrest attempt.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez Garcia, of Villa De Ramos, S.L.P., Mexico, faces up to 20 years in prison for the attack which left the agent with a fractured left shoulder.

He told authorities he was one of three men in a pick-up truck stopped on Dec. 13 just outside of Roma, according to court documents.

But when agents discovered he was in the country illegally and tried to arrest him, Gonzalez resisted, knocking himself and the arresting agent to the ground. The impact injured the federal law enforcement officer.

Authorities arrested Gonzalez nearby a short time later. He has remained in custody since his arrest.

Gonzalez was previously detained and deported in August 2006, after entering the United States illegally through Laredo.

In 2005, he served 10 months in a U.S. federal prison for smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States.

Assaults on Border Patrol agents patrolling the nation’s Southwestern border continue to rise as the nation takes a tougher stance on illegal immigration.

During fiscal year 2007, the agency reported a total of 987 attacks with weapons including rocks, vehicles, guns and Molotov cocktails, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics. That number marks a substantial increase over 2006’s total of 752.

But incidents of violence in the Rio Grande Valley Sector, a region that extends from Brownsville to Roma, have remained relatively few and minor, according to agency reports.

If convicted, Gonzalez faces up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. He awaits sentencing at a June 6 hearing.

U.S. replaces two ships off Lebanese coast
04 Mar 2008

The U.S. Navy has replaced two ships it sent off the coast of Lebanon last week amid political deadlock there to send a signal to Syria, officials said on Tuesday. The cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the destroyer USS Ross replaced the destroyer USS Cole and a refueling ship over the past day, U.S. Navy officials said.

Another refueling ship remained in place, meaning the United States continued to have three warships in the area, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity. The ships are not visible from the Lebanese coast but their presence is intended as a signal to Syria and other countries in the Middle East of U.S. commitment to the region, U.S. officials have said.

Some Israeli forces enter south Gaza
Tue Mar 4, 2008

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip - About 25 Israeli armored vehicles rumbled into southern Gaza and clashed with militants after nightfall Tuesday. A 1-month-old baby was killed in the crossfire, a medical official said.

The Israeli tanks fired shells and attack helicopters fired missiles during the clashes, Palestinian witnesses said. The baby girl was killed by a ricocheting bullet, Palestinian Health Ministry official Moaiya Hassanain said. Eight militants and three civilians were wounded, none of then seriously, he said.

Israeli defense officials said it was a "pinpoint" operation aimed at Gaza militants. It came just a day after Israel ended a destructive and bloody ground operation in northern Gaza against Palestinian rocket squads. The armored column entered Gaza through the Kissufim crossing, which was the main crossing point for Israeli settlers in Gaza before Israel's 2005 pullout, witnesses said.

The soldiers arrested two Islamic Jihad militants and were pulling out two hours after the incursion, witnesses said. The Israeli military confirmed that the operation was over.

Government warns of terror threat to trains
Tuesday, March 04, 2008

In a bulletin released Friday to U.S. law enforcement officials, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is warning of “continued strong terrorist interest” in targeting mass transit systems in the U.S.

The 10-page threat assessment, labeled “Unclassified/For Official Use Only” and obtained by NBC News, cautions that the “U.S. mass transit and passenger rail systems are vulnerable to terrorist attacks because they are accessible to large numbers of the public and are notoriously difficult to secure.”

Previous rail attacks in Madrid, London and Mumbai “could inspire terrorists to conduct similar attacks in the United States,” the report adds. However, the authors of the intelligence analysis make clear that there are no known, immediate dangers. “At this time, there is no credible intelligence regarding specific plans by any extremist groups or individuals to perpetrate an act of terrorism against the U.S. mass transit system,” they write.

“Oil For Terror”
By INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Tuesday, March 04, 2008 4:20 PM PT

SNIPPET: “Terrorism: Did Hugo Chavez hand terrorists access to Venezuela’s huge state oil earnings? A FARC computer captured by Colombian forces shows just that — and it amounts to state support of terror.
Related Topics: Latin America & Caribbean | Global War On Terror”

EDITORIAL SNIPPET: “Colombian officials on Tuesday reported yet another hideous finding from the laptop computer of dead FARC terrorist Raul Reyes, who was blown away in a Colombian military raid last Saturday.

Turns out the FARC had a friend called “Angel” who was none other than Chavez, the oil-rich Venezuelan dictator whose ties to the FARC go back at least 15 years. The new revelations showed that he was using state oil company cash to finance terrorists.

Last December, Chavez, using the pretense of mediating a hostage release with FARC operative Ivan Marquez, secretly organized a diversion of $300 million in Venezuelan state oil earnings to the FARC.”

The Pakistani scientist disgraced for selling nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya has been hospitalized after complaining of weakness, the military said Wednesday.

Medics who checked on Abdul Qadeer Khan at his home Tuesday found that he was suffering from low blood pressure and fever, probably due to an infection, a military statement said.

He was subsequently admitted to a hospital for a detailed examination, it said. Doctors are hopeful that Khan will make a full recovery and return home in a couple of days.

BANGOR, Maine (AP) —
