:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. Coalition Kills One, Detains 11 in Iraq Operations

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2008 – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 11 suspects during operations to disrupt al Qaeda operations in central and northern Iraq today and yesterday.

During operations in Iraq today:

— Coalition forces conducted an operation east of Khan Bani Sad targeting an alleged improvised-explosive-device and suicide-bombing facilitator. During the operation, coalition forces were fired upon and returned fire, killing one terrorist. They also detained two suspected terrorists and destroyed a vehicle found in the area that contained explosive materials.

— Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists, including an alleged al Qaeda associate involved in media and propaganda operations. The individual reportedly is associated with suspects detained Feb. 8, including two alleged senior leaders involved in the Baghdad and Mosul al Qaeda media networks.

— In Anbar province, six suspected terrorists were detained west of Samarra during an operation targeting associates of a senior leader involved in al Qaeda media and propaganda operations.

In other operations around Iraq yesterday:

— Coalition forces captured an alleged leader of an insurgent group associated with al Qaeda who has worked with that network’s senior leadership.

— South of Baghdad, coalition forces captured a suspected Iranian-backed “special groups” finance facilitator and detained six other suspected criminals in the Suwayrah area. The targeted individual reportedly is a finance leader for Iranian-affiliated special groups in Iraq’s southern provinces, including Najaf, Karbala, Babil, Wasit and Qadisiyah. He was allegedly a mortar and rocket specialist who had trained in Iran. During the operation, coalition forces also discovered large amounts of U.S. currency.

— Coalition forces captured four suspected al Qaeda leaders accused of involvement in numerous terrorist attacks in the Baghdad area yesterday, including car- and suicide-bomb attacks.

In Feb. 22 operations, Iraqi forces in coordination with U.S. soldiers from Troop B, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, discovered five weapons caches in the Busayefi area. The caches consisted of homemade bombs, homemade liquid explosives, 80 mm mortar rounds, 60 mm mortar rounds, rocket-propelled grenades, an AK-47 assault rifle, 7.62 mm ammunition, and anti-American propaganda. An explosives disposal team destroyed the caches in a controlled detonation.

Also Feb. 22, paratroopers with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Multinational Division Baghdad, detained a suspected special groups facilitator during an operation in Baghdad’s Shaab neighborhood.

Attacks a response to Denmark cartoons

Gaza terrorists quoted in Ynet on Sunday said they had fired six rockets at Israeli towns throughout the day in response to comics that were printed in newspapers in Denmark. The cartoons included depictions of the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

PRC terrorist Mohammed el-Aal told Ynet that the rocket attacks were an “initial response” to the Denmark cartoons. Jews should be attacked as a response to the cartoons because “the Jews have also hurt Islam and have also hurt the Koran... as part of the plot to harm Islam,” el-Aal said.

“U.S. urges monitoring flow of nuclear materials”
By Nicholas Kralev
February 26, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “SEOUL — The United States wants six-nation talks aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear programs to begin monitoring transfers of nuclear materials and technology from the North to other countries, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Police arrest traveler who fled from security screeners at Miami International Airport
The Charleston Gazette ^ | 02-26-08 | ap
Posted on 02/26/2008 1:05:04 AM PST by Jet Jaguar

MIAMI (AP) — A man with multiple passports was arrested Monday after he bolted from security screeners at Miami International Airport, jumped from a second floor concourse and broke his arm and ribs, authorities said.

Transportation and Security Administration officials became suspicious of Faid Beydoun as he stood in a security line, waiting to board a Los Angeles-bound flight. When Beydoun’s travel documents also raised concerns, agents asked him to step out of line for a secondary screening.

Beydoun, who was carrying multiple passports, then ran from security screeners, jumped 25 feet off the second floor concourse and broke his arm and ribs, The Miami Herald reported.

The man was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence, according to a statement. They did not identify him, but Miami-Dade County Corrections Department spokeswoman Janelle Hall said Beydoun was arrested for the same charges Monday, as well as loitering and prowling.

Telephone calls by The Associated Press to Miami-Dade Police, the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were not returned Monday night.

Beydoun, 42, was being held in the hospital ward of the Miami-Dade jail at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Hall said. Beydoun did not have an attorney listed.

Two other men, also headed to Los Angeles, were taken off a later flight that was still on the tarmac. They told investigators they paid for Beydoun’s plane ticket and that he was their Miami Beach party guide. No weapons or dangerous material were found with them.

“Passenger Arrested with Box Cutter in Hollow Book”
By Annie Jacobsen in category Airport Security & Screening

SNIPPET: “21-year old Benjamin Baines, Jr. was arrested on Sunday at Tampa International Airport after a TSA screener found a box cutter in a hollowed-out book in his backpack. The photograph at right was provided by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority.

According to a report from the TSA, the books in Baines’ backpack included “Muhammad in the Bible,” “The Prophet’s Prayer” and “The Noble Qur’an.”

Thomas W. Krause of The Tampa Tribune broke the story this morning. “Airport security ran Benjamin Baines Jr.’s backpack through an X-ray machine and saw the image of a box cutter.”

Baines told federal authorities he forgot the box cutter was in the book.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 22, 2008

“Wheaton Resident Arrested in University of Illinois at Chicago Threat”

PRESS RELEASE SNIPPET: “Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and John W. Richardson, Chief of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Police Department, announced today the arrest of a 24-year old Wheaton resident for making e-mail threats against the UIC campus. MAHTAB SHIRANI was arrested earlier today, without incident, by members of the Chicago FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in Chicago .

SHIRANI was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of making threats through use of interstate commerce, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, an individual subsequently identified as SHIRANI, who is a student at the University, sent an anonymous e-mail to a UIC administrator threatening a repeat of the shooting incident that had taken place the previous day at Northern Illinois University . The threat stated that a group of five individuals would carry out the attack sometime during the spring 2008 semester. No reason was given for making the threat.

Subsequent investigation by the UIC Police determined that the threatening e-mail was sent from a computer in the campus computer laboratory. It was also determined the user ID for the computer in question was assigned SHIRANI. Additional investigation eventually led to the identification of SHIRANI as the individual responsible for sending this threatening e-mail.

SHIRANI appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan R. Nolan in Chicago , earlier this afternoon, at which time she was formally charged. SHIRANI was released on bond, pending her next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge filed against her, SHIRANI faces a possible sentence of up to 10 years incarceration.

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Grant wants to commend the UIC Police Department and administrative staff for the prompt and professional manner in which this threat was handled and investigated. “The school’s response to this threat not only led to the identification and arrest of the person responsible but also prevented widespread panic from sweeping the campus. The UIC community should be justifiably proud of their campus police force,” said Mr. Grant.

The Chicago FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is comprised of investigators and officers from fifteen federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, whose combined resources and expertise are used to investigate and prevent potential terrorist incidents.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
