El Al IMHO is THE prototype for airline security. Nothing else even comes close.
Nuclear detectives urgently needed
A terrorist nuclear explosion devastates Manhattan, but no group takes credit. The pressure on the U.S. president to retaliate is intense. Acting on sketchy information, the president orders an attack, but it turns out to be the wrong terrorists, in the wrong country. Things go downhill from there.
To avoid that and other nightmare scenarios, a group of 12 scientists with extensive nuclear expertise, headed by Stanford physicist Michael May, is urging an international push to improve the science of nuclear forensics.
Snippets: Gilbert Peterson and colleagues at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson AFB, in Ohio are developing technology that could help any organization sniff out insider threats by analyzing email activity or find individuals among potentially tens of thousands of employees with latent interests in sensitive topics. The same technology might also be used to spot individuals who feel alienated within the organization as well as unraveling any worrying changes in their social network interactions.
An aggrieved employee, saboteur, or terrorist infiltrator with access to such information could potentially cause great harm. Spotting the potential for an insider attack quickly without recourse to huge numbers of investigators is essential to preventing such an occurrence.

Universal Islamic Blasphemy Law?
And incidents which have occurred within just the past 2-months illustrate that what prevails in Pakistan is hardly unique, but rather emblematic. Pervez Kambakhsh, a 23 year-old Afghan journalist was recently convicted (January 2008) of "blasphemy" -- consistent with classical Islamic Law -- for downloading and distributing an article "insulting" Islam, including the "blasphemous" allegation that "...Muhammad had ignored the rights of women.." Subsequently the Afghan Senate issued a statement on the case -- signed by its leader, Sibghatullah Mojaddedi, a reputed ally of President Hamid Karzai -- approving the death sentence conferred on Mr Kambakhsh, also in full accord with the Shari'a, by a city court in Mazar-e-Sharif.
Fallout over airport prayer space exposes deep tensions
Days after Salt Lake Tribune columnist Rebecca Walsh wrote about her own constitutional concerns, he filed a formal complaint with the Federal Aviation Administration. Walsh, whom he quoted and continues to quote in conversations, called the building a "government-sanctioned Islamic center." Her attention to the issue seemingly emboldened him.
In his handwritten complaint, he wrote: "Islamists are required to wage cultural jihad and they seem to be engaging in 'sharia [sic] by the inch' here."

President of Chinese House Church Alliance issues Open Letter to the International Community
By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
CHINA (ANS) — Since his conversion to Christianity in 1986, Pastor Zhang Mingxuan has been arrested, beaten and incarcerated 12 times. Most recently, Public Security Bureau and State officials forced Zhang to close the orphanage he had been running with his two sons.
Pastor Zhang Mingxuan
Zhang and the orphans have continued to look for places of residence, but have been refused several times by landlords who have been threatened by officials not to lease to Zhang. Currently, Zhang has been separated from his two sons, who were also forced to move by PSB officials.
Now Zhang Mingxuan, president of the Chinese house church alliance, has issued an open letter to the international community, informing the world of the sufferings and persecutions he has endured at the hands of the CPC.
Detailed in his third open letter are the many hardships and injustices pastor Zhang has had to endure throughout the years since becoming an outspoken evangelist and leader of the house church alliance.
In his first two open letters, Zhang appealed to President Hu Jintao, to rectify the wrongs being done by corrupt Government officials. To this date Zhang has received no response.
In his latest appeal, Pastor Zhang has written to the international community encouraging them to pray for the upcoming Beijing Olympics and to press the Chinese Government to realize true freedom of religion and rule of law.
CAA says it is Zhang’s hope, along with millions of other persecuted Christians, that the World’s attention on the Olympic Games will bring the Chinese Government to realize the wrongs it has done and allow the house church alliance to help build a true “harmonious society.”

SECURITY NOTICE: TORONTO ANTICIPATES KOSOVO-RELATED PROTESTS
2 Nov 2007
WARDEN MESSAGE: HURRICANE NOEL APPROACHING NOVA SCOTIA
U.S. Consulate Vancouver released the following Warden Message February 23:
We have been advised by local law enforcement authorities that a demonstration, called Pro Serb, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 1 PM. This demonstration is related to the declaration of independence made by Kosovo on Sunday, February 17, 2008. The Vancouver Police Department is monitoring the situation and expects a large turnout.
Due to the recent burning of U.S. Embassy Belgrade (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3960.html), and a 1999 attack on U.S. Consulate General Toronto during a demonstration related to events in the former Yugoslavia, we recommend that U.S. citizens avoid engaging demonstrators in any way and stay away from the Consulate at the time of the scheduled demonstration on Sunday. American citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. We urge American citizens and others with distinctive ties to U.S. interests, such as U.S. related businesses, to review the Department of States Worldwide Caution of January 17, 2008 (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html), which updates the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests throughout the world. American citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.
For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Departments Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings are located. American citizens may also obtain up-to-date information on security conditions overseas by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States or Canada, and 1-202-501-4444 from overseas. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

“U.S. diplomats, relatives told to exit country”
By David R. Sands
February 23, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The State Department yesterday ordered all nonessential U.S. diplomatic personnel and relatives to leave Serbia and placed embassies around the Balkans on high security alert following the sacking Thursday of the American Embassy in Belgrade.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “But even as Serbian leaders tried to restrain passions over Kosovo, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Washington and key European capitals should have expected the fierce reaction to Kosovo’s independence declaration. Mr. Putin, who has strongly backed Belgrade’s claims to Kosovo, called the split a “terrible precedent” that will come back to haunt the West.
“They have not thought through the results of what they are doing,” Mr. Putin told reporters in Moscow. “At the end of the day, [Kosovo] is a two-ended stick and the second end will come back and hit them in the face.””

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080223-05
February 23, 2008
Coalition forces discover disguised truck-bomb
Multi-National Division North PAO
MOSUL, Iraq Coalition forces discovered a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device disguised as a Red Crescent food relief truck in southeastern Mosul Feb. 15.
The truck was labeled with hospital markings but contained eight 55-gallon drums with more than 5,000 pounds of unknown bulk explosives.
The discovery was made during a route clearance operation as part of Operation Phantom Phoenix. Because of the proximity of the VBIED to civilian population, an explosive ordnance disposal team determined the truck would need to be removed from the neighborhood before its destruction.
A VBIED detonation of this size would kill or injure many innocent civilians. This just shows how ruthless al Qaeda is and their lack of concern for the effect of their operations on the Iraqi people, said Lt. Col. Christopher Johnson, commander of 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment.

Press Release A080224a
February 24, 2008
Coalition forces target Baghdad, Diyala terrorist networks; one killed, four detained
BAGHDAD Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained four suspects Saturday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in central Iraq.
Saturday afternoon in Baghdad, Coalition forces killed a wanted terrorist and captured another wanted individual, both of whom were reportedly close associates of the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader for the networks operating in the city. During the operation, Coalition forces detained both individuals on site. One of the individuals then attempted to escape, lunging toward Coalition forces, who engaged the hostile threat, killing him.
In Baghdad today, Coalition forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq member involved in the planning of suicide attacks in the city. The suspect had reportedly arranged to receive a suicide vest in order to attack a group of Concerned Local Citizen recruits. Intelligence indicates the suspect is a close associate of several leaders involved in AQI networks throughout Baghdad. Information gained from this operation led Coalition forces to a nearby location, where they captured an alleged member of the citys car bombing network, who is also believed to have been involved in attacks against CLCs.
During an operation east of Khan Bani Sad today, one suspected terrorist was detained at an alleged AQI meeting location associated with the suicide network in the Diyala River Valley. Nearby, Coalition forces directed a fixed-wing airstrike on a house assessed to be rigged with explosives.
“These captures represent continued and steady progress in disrupting al-Qaeda in Iraq networks in and around Baghdad,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Iraqi and Coalition forces remain committed to ending al-Qaeda’s campaign of terror, helping create a safer country for all Iraqis.”
