:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Thanks Cindy. I saw another thread on the lithium battery limits last night. My cellphone and digital camera contain the only lithium batteries that travel with me on airplanes. Around the house, I use lithium batteries for my outside wireless temperature sensors as they operate at much lower temperatures than carbon/zinc or alkaline cells. That's important this week with the low temps here in Idaho. Happy New Year!

The British newspaper source on the special forces makes me think we are letting Pakistan’s neighbors along with the Russians and China know loud and clear to stand down in regards to the nukes if such operations are activated...especially since the UN has supposedly shut *all* offices in Pakistan. Somebody must be kicking up a fuss on a red phone.

More Flights Cancelled at Sofia Airport (Bulgaria)
29 December 2007, Saturday

Several flights to and from the Sofia airport were cancelled on Thursday by airlines, although weather conditions over the Bulgarian capital are clear. Bulgaria Air flights from Varna, Brussels and Skopje, as well as Malev's flight from Budapest and Austrian Airlines' flight from Vienna, MyAir's flight from Bari and Tarom's flight from Bucharest have all been cancelled.

In several cases that has affected departures as well, with flights to Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest likewise cancelled. Unlike earlier in the week, when dozens of flights were grounded due to fog blanketing Sofia, this time the cancellations were carried out by the airlines themselves.

Yep. Seems strange that they would cancel so many flights with no explanation. Especially when they did state the weather conditions were clear. Hmmm.

Man Arrested, Charged After Guns Found At Airport (Hawaii)
December 30, 2007

HONOLULU -- A man was arrested Saturday night after he tried to board a plane at Honolulu's airport to the Mainland with two fully-loaded guns. The State Sheriff's Office said Christopher Hollie had hidden the semi-automatics in his luggage and refused to tell officers why.

KITV's Denby Fawcett reported that the Sheriffs' Office said this was a very unusual incident, and that it's extremely rare for them to arrest a passenger trying to fly out of Hawaii with loaded guns hidden in his or her luggage.

The Sheriff's Office in charge of airport law enforcement said Hollie was arrested at about 9 p.m. on Saturday. TSA security said they found a .45 handgun and a .9 mm semi-automatic weapon. Both guns were loaded and concealed in his packed clothes, officials said. Sheriffs said even though the guns were in checked luggage and were not going into the passenger section of the plane, it was of grave concern because both guns were fully-loaded and ready to use.

The Sheriff's Office said Hollie told them he was going to Ohio. Sheriffs said Hollie was uncooperative after he was arrested. He told them he worked at Tripler Hospital, but he would not say why he was traveling with loaded guns.

Of course, the nukes could already have been moved and we would never know. Pure speculation, of course.

I agree, speculatively of course.

Spate of suicide bombings

Pakistan has been under the grip of suicide bombings ever since the Lal Masjid saga ended . Since the July 10 operation against the Lal Masjid in which more then 80 people lost their lives, Nearly 200 people mostly Security Personnel have been killed while 263 wounded in 21 incidents of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, abduction, terrorism and bloodshed in NWFP and tribal areas which seems as the reaction to the operation silence that began in Islamabad on July 03.

It has been widely speculated by the general public that the recent spate of suicide attacks are a back lash of the Lal Majid operation as mostly security forces and policemen are targeted. The Government however is refusing that it is a reaction to the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa operation but it cannot be ruled out.

President General Pervez Musharraf while addressing the nation recently had said that the terrorists, who were present in the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa during the operation, belonged to tribal areas and NWFP.

Beggars disappear after Liaqat Bagh incident

After the Liaqat Bagh tragedy, in which the Pakistan People’s Party Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, beggars of the city have disappeared and no beggar was seen on important points of the city. Normally beggars were seen on all important places of the city in great number, but for the last four days, beggars have disappeared from the markets and bazaars.

Government urged to begin investigation

Afterwards, the PMA leaders passed a resolution, condemning the gruesome murder of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto and holding the government responsible for the tragedy. The PMA also expressed its dissatisfaction with the pace and mode of investigation being adopted by the government.

The beggars disappeared.

That’s interesting and I wonder what the exact significance of this is except maybe, the fear factor.
