Iowa where?

I moved to Cedar Rapids almost a year ago... you’re right, people are friendly though I’ve lived places mostly as friendly all my life. But small town life sure is nice. I was really shocked last week when I heard about them finding a body not too far from our house... it’s just such a quiet place, that’s major news and really weird.

Best Buy used to do this ... a long time ago.

My local Best Buy still does this. If you are leaving with merchandise, be prepared to show your receipt.

I don't mind. If Best Buy can keep their prices low in part from taking a pro-active stance on shoplifting, I'll play along. After all, it is the honest people that ultimately pay for the merchandise stolen by thieves.

On a related subject, I recently bought some power tools from Sears. When I paid for the merchandise, the cashier put a little yellow "PAID" sticker on the box --but she forgot to cut off the tamper-alarm.

I didn't notice this until I got back home. I wasn't about to drive all the way back to Sears to have her remove it so I just cut it off myself. Of course, as soon as I cut through the wire, the thing went off with a loud siren and flashing lights! It took quite an effort to beat the thing into silence with a hammer --after I tried unsuccessfully submerging it in a sink full of water in an effort to short it out!

They wanted the store to be renamed We-Be-Toys?

Not exactly. They want it renamed to 'We-Be-Toys-You-know-what'I'm-talking-bout'

I'm very skeptical of the claim that black shoppers were stopped but whites were not.

Same here. My guess is they're fishing for a "litigation lottery" windfall. I wouldn't be surprised if they've tried this before.

Sadly, Toys 'R Us will probably settle out of court and they'll move on to their next target.

No one leaves a Sam’s Club location in Dallas without showing their purchase receipt. It never seemed like a big deal to me.

I live in one of the nicer suburbs in New Jersey. At our local Toys R Us, they check receipts at the door for every customer. If they are letting any customers out the door in the Bronx without checking receipts, I will eat my hat.

Frankly, I think checking receipts is obnoxious. That is one reason I do so much shopping on-line.

Iowa City. People warned me I was coming to a den of liberal inequity, but this is small time compared to Seattle. : )

Prolly an ex-TSA guy, Xena. They’re used to checking only the hot chicks, ya know.

This is the problem. People putting up with this treatment. THESE WHOLESALE CHEAP STORES TREAT YOU LIKE CRIMINALS.

I don’t like places that do this garbage.

This in no way means I support the plaintiffs trying to leverage “racism” as the reason.

It should be a class-action suit for ALL people against nit-picky untrusting no-service-but-we’ll-frisk-you stores.

And then we FReepers wonder why so many people “go along” with whatever the GOVERNMENT makes us do.

I’m not sure ex-TSA guys are qualified to work as Best Buy door people. ;)

“it astonished me they’d be so blunt.”

Why? 1 good thing about the non-Western world (these days): the idea of “political correctness” is FOREIGN to them. They don’t care. They aren’t on tippy-toes on eggshells. They aren’t cockolded by some holier-than-thou elitist culture group.

Best Buy used to do this [make customers show their receipts upon leaving the store] ... a long time ago.

Best Buy does this in San Francisco. CompUSA also does it. CompUSA has someone who looks inside your purse or bag as you leave. The DeYoung Museum has someone who looks inside your purse or bag as you enter. However, men with no bags are free to walk into the museum unmolested. Nobody checks their pockets. (This actually happened to me. A friend and I went to the museum a few years ago. My tiny purse got checked, while my friend sailed through the line unchecked, with a knife in his pocket. You'd be surprised how many men walk around with knives in their pockets. Yet women are the ones who primarily get targeted for invasive scrutiny. Tell me, what can do more damage - a tube of lipstick or a knife?)

There are several stores I've been in recently that everyone has to show their receipts upon leaving the store.

The only times I've ever had to show receipts was when idiot cashiers didn't clear the anti-theft tabs and I set off alarms walking out the door.

So? You could have been walking right out of the store
with a WoW in your hands, in plane sight, with out pausing at the register and paying! It happens all the time!

Hey, what’s that white guy doing back there (far back, right side)?

Kinda looks like Dan Ackroyd.

Remember when he "sang" in We Are The World? Maybe he was doing the same thing with this group - just hovering in the background and lip-synching.

My receipt was taped to the WoW box. Stevie Wonder could have seen it. ;)

Besides, in this Best Buy, you have to go through the registers to exit, whether you buy anything or not.
