The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"So instead of feeding through a breach or two, it backs up and spills over the entire bank on both sides"

The water is not coming from the river but the lake.

Its a real big lake with a couple hundreds foot breaches.
This is not rocket science - even the russians mangaed to bury Chernobyl in millions of tons of concrete and lead in short order.

either flooded or possibly undermined and not safe to use until someone can drop in by chopper and examine it.

The airport is in Kenner. Isn't this failed pump thing going to put it under for the long term?

Mayor tried to blame others on the sandbags not being in place but he was just disssed on WWL because it was tried this morning and failed which the Mayor had to know.

Less than impressed with the Mayor (understatement)!

I am not saying he isn't doing the right thing....I am sure he is......talking to officials, going back to DC to deal with the crisis etc.

I just hope we hear him address the nation tomorrow.

I don't expect him to do it tonight like he did right after 9.11. But, I need to see him tomorrow, and I am sure others do as well.

Of course, the WTC was heavy damage in a limited area within our biggest metropolitan area -- equipment and trained people to operate was everywhere. While I'm sure that NO has plenty of the same, it's all under water or blocked by water. In one sense, MS is in better shape, the tidal surge came, destroyed and then mostly fell back. So it'll be a lot easier to get help in fairly close, both private and govt. aid.

There were probably differing opinions as to priorities with limited resources. I can understand and appreciate that.

What I don't like is the Mayor choosing this time to make these stupid, pitiful statements. No leadership there!

I've worried all day that the levee to the Mississippi would break. Is the Army Corp of Engineers there yet and keeping an eye on that one, do we know?

Actually, except for the two blocks just east of Canal, the rest of Bourbon is above 5 feet in elevation according to the topo map.

So they are high and dry. Let's see where the water is at tomorrow. Don't know what else to do, do you?

but he's not all wrong on that. all the trades just showed up at the WTC - they weren't asked, no contracts signed, the ironworkers and crane operators just showed up to assist the police and fire departments.

that new orleans area is the largest port in the country, there are no seaborne private companies who are capable of plugging a levee?

I believe so. I think the Kenner location is thought to be concrete slabs floating on liquified soil and thus would be unsuitable for use.

"Where the hell is he?"

President Bush is right where he ought to be, directing things behind the scenes and staying out of the way during these first hectic days.

Did you hear his speech this morning?

Hayley Barber, Mississippi governor, just said on CNN that he has talked to the President three times today and that "he is chomping at the bit to come down here, but I asked him to wait."

I am with you -- need a man running this effort. Sheriff did say that FEMA is now in charge.

The President will be there when search and rescue is finished. Talking about the President got it and FEMA team and assets where there before the hurricane hit. Shame the idiot Governor and Mayor did not get it until the President called the Governor.
