President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

New thread - sorry about the delay
You're doing a great job, NN.
I agree.
Heartbreak after heartbreak everytime I see the television. There have been 2 babies born in the Dome, I heard. Almost unimaginable. So much help is on the way. I think the next 24 hours may bring some improvment. I am hopeful.
What would we do without you. Who ever would have thought that this is what we were coming together to witness.
Grateful, as alway NautiNurse.
You are a credit to FReepers everywhere.
Anyone watching FOX? I can't believe how little information is being deciminated to these people. What good is all these press conferences with the Governor and Mayor if no one has power or TV's to hear them? Why aren't they there on the scene with their sleeves rolled up and HELPING like Jeb Bush in Florida does?
Radios... should be some radios out there.
......and?
Thanx for the ping. Sad beyond belief.
Have we seen anything from the southernmost areas of LA..where the storm first hit?
Well sure. Everyone know white folk don't loot. /sarc
Please post links to as many of these NGIA satellite images of the coastline as are available to the public:

I don't see any radios on any of those people... what i see is babies in need of water, milk, food, shade and sitting on a freaking freeway with parents in total despair... Shep, himself, is in despair for them... the hospitals are overwelmed and giving patients ventilation manually....
great post. thanks.
Thank you for the thread. I found out last night that we lost everything. I live in Gautier but evacuated to Atlanta on Sunday morning. My daughters went back yesterday (big mistake) to check things out. For whatever reason my daughters cell phone (cellular south) is getting a sporadic signal if the number she calls is long distance. She called hysterical (I wont forget her words as long as I live, or her voice) "The house is gone" the next sentence was worse because now I'm having hate in my heart. "the neighbor ran a bunch of black guys out who were looting" Wow....this sucks. My daughter and her boyfriend lost both of their cars, I lost one car and the mail wall was blown off of my house. The roof came DOWN into my bedroom. Please pray for me.
Yes. The need is very great.
Just saw the first article (German magazine) that directly blames the N.O. fiasco to Bush. Unbelievable!!!!

FORMER CLINTON ADVISOR
"No One Can Say they Didn't See it Coming"
By Sidney Blumenthal
In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.
Biblical in its uncontrolled rage and scope, Hurricane Katrina has left millions of Americans to scavenge for food and shelter and hundreds to thousands reportedly dead. With its main levee broken, the evacuated city of New Orleans has become part of the Gulf of Mexico. But the damage wrought by the hurricane may not entirely be the result of an act of nature.

WWLTV live. Excellent video coverage now.
Oh, my God... and your's is one of thousands of stories like yours.
I'm white, so I guess I could go out and "find" things. My black friend next to me, well he'd be the looter. Feh!
This is a joke, right?
Things are happening:
Watching my local TV station KRBC in Abilene.
C130's packing up and leaving Dyess, stuff moving from Ft. Hood etc.
What it took was the President to kick this thingy in the butt.
You can bet that the boot has been firmly emplanted.
mpackard, we ARE and will continue to pray for you.
I'm praying for you!! My heart goes out to you and your family!!
I agree, but now is not the time for hand wrining and recrimination. People are wander the 10 Freeway moving based on rumors with no food or water. Looks like a third-world effort so far.
Prayers for You and your family. We are glad you are safe.
How much of the apathy is due to the looting?
I wish it was a joke, but unfortunately it's not...

Shep having a melt-down!
You didn't lose everything. You lost stuff. God bless you for taking your family out of harms way.
The first words from the Clintoons, in the mouth of none other than Sid Vicious. Sid has done their dirty work for many years.
You nailed it, Okie. It is always someone else's fault. Couldn't be that Governor, or that Mayor. Nope, gotta be the bid ol' ebil GWB.
And, Cindy needs a clue. Lots of people are suffering, not only her. Wanna buy her one?
What's he saying?
Sidney is truly a snake. I hope he crawls back under his rock!
Fox: New Orleans mayor says there are 100,000 refugees still to be evacuated from New Orleans. Meaning that for every person in the Superdome, 3 are stuck outside or other buildings.
That was quite an ugly picture Smith painted of the situation in NO with his opening statement on his program tonight.
Aw geez, I keep seeing the shots of debris and nothing but a foundation left. I know what it means, but your experience is the first that really connected me to the enormity of it. Be strong.

"On Wednesday reporters listening to horrific stories of death and survival at the Biloxi Junior High School shelter looked north across Irish Hill Road and saw Air Force personnel playing basketball and performing calisthenics.
Playing basketball and performing calisthenics!
When asked why these young men were not being used to help in the recovery effort, our reporters were told that it would be pointless to send military personnel down to the beach to pick up debris."
What can we do?
EVERYONE....SEND $$$ to the SALVATION ARMY.....that's the BEST WAY TO HELP!!! THEY can be trusted!
Anyone watching FOX?"
Yes I watched Shep at 3pm and he is repeating the same thing at 7pm. "No one is telling the people where to go for help." My question is , If Shep has the ability to communicate with the people at Fox, why doesn't Fox news find out what the plans are for this group. There are so many evacuation projects going on throughout the city I find it hard to believe that these people are being ignored intentionally. Shep either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem.
I saw a cameraman taking pictures of 3 guys struggling to put something in a truck..I would have had more respect for the cameraman if he had put his camera down to give these guys help.
