"so I have been praying to God to grant wisdom and patience to our president.

I say prayers for him too. It looks like our prayers have been answered with his Supreme Court pick.

We better say some prayers for the rest of the Republicans to have a backbone to withstand "the usual" from the democrats.

I don't even think it's a question of "if" the democrats filibuster, it's "when" they filibuster, (or pull some other dirty trick), what will the Republican's do to ensure that Roberts is confirmed?

I do hope the Republicans will take this opportunity to point out yet another profound difference between Republicans and Dems i.e. When the dems claim they want a "moderate" what they mean is that they want a Supreme court nominee who is "moderate" about the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights.

The dems desire Supreme Court nominees who will set aside the Constitution, and say for example- remove private property rights.

The dems WANT justices just like the ones who took away private property rights.

The Republicans should not hesitate to explain these differences to the American people.

Lindsay Graham was on Hannity talking like Attila the Hun

Yeh, he looked like he was totally psyched.

Roberts is a great pick. Bush probably just came up with Roberts' name ............ right about around last Christmas when he was thinking what he wanted for Christmas.

;-)

It's almost too bad that DU will be shut down tonight. Perhaps the FR should contriubute to keep them up? LOL!

Maybe we should help them out with, say, 400-500 tabs of sleeping pills? And a few gallons of Jack Daniels

hahaha....gift wrapped of course!

My glasses are just fine. I expressed concern about the first judge, but I also expressed some confidence in Bush. This pick I am much more confortable with. Just because I did not like the pick that was supposively leaked out and like this one better does not make me a hypocrit. I don't agree with Bush on many things and I state so when I do, but I am not one that bashes Bush, so it was a grossly incorrect characterization of what I said.

You remind me of Monty Python. "What has Bush ever done for us?"

"Tax cuts."

"Oh, of course, tax cuts. But other than that?"

"Fought a successful war on terrorists."

All right, I'll grant you the war on terror and the tax cuts. But what else has he done for us?"

"Abortion. Don't forget he signed the PBA bill, banned abortions at military bases and with UN money."

"Ok, ok, tax cuts, war on terror, abortion, but aside from those what has he done?"

"Judges. He got conservative judges confirmed."

"Fine. But OTHER THAN THAT . . . ."

"Brilliant Bait & Switch by Bush!!!"

That is exactly what happened.

Mixed with the fact that the announcement occurred at 9PM, he took away their opportunity to engage in negative spin (propaganda) against Roberts.

There isn't one iota of evidence that Bush listened to you or anyone else in making this pick. He made the pick because of who he is.

"I'M HERE TO APOLOGIZE. If this is accurate I say WOW! The DUers btw are suicidal right now. It's hilarious."

I bet they are having a cow.

They just can't adjust to having a republican president who knows how to outwit/outmaneuver them.

President Bush is the first president to announce a nominee at 9PM since Nixon.

This ought to be in the GOP play book. Democrats can announce early, because that allows the media an entire day to spread good spin.

I am completely surprised. I am a HUGE President Bush fan, but have been concerned that he'd nominate a "moderate".

I was wrong.

Ok. I'm doing it. I'm joining the GOP. Been an independent up to now, although I've been anti-leftist for some time. This tears it.

That's where I was until the middle of last year. Now I'm a card-carrying Republican.

Why was Arlen reported as pleased???

He might just be happy that the President picked someone who's less likely to have a major confrontation (given he was confirmed 99-0 for the DC Circuit), and conservative enough to get some of the "base" pressure off his back.

By the way wouldnt it be great for him to be personally attacked in conf hearings and have him challenge a senator to a dual over honor. That would be STRONG!!!!

My early impression is that he is pretty laid back and will be hard to ruffle. I think we will be proud of him. The more I hear of/from him, the more I like him.

I only hope he doesn't "mature" during his years on the bench.

To answer your question, YES, I do think he changed his mind and took Gonzales off the short list because enough conservative groups and individuals sent the message that he was unacceptable.

Look. The President has said from day one that he would nominate only those who strictly followed the Constitution, and didn't make law. Everyone on his short list would be such a person, and acceptable to those of us who value the Constitution.

Gonzalez was supposedly on the short list (via the news media), but yesterday Edith Clements was THE nominee according to the talking heads too.

Gonzalez' name was being thrown around to cause controversy, by who knows who.

The President made this pick LONG before Gonzalez' name was brought up. He's a man of his word, and this has been part of his goal since he became President. No amount of 'noise' on a political forum made him say,"Oops. I'll take Gonzalez off my list."

(And it's not 'worshipping' him to respect his character and consistency with regard to court nominees).
