Some liberal Democrats may attempt to filibuster though, but it would likely be closed...

If Mark Levin likes him, I like him.

Damn right. If he's vetted by The Great One he's fine by me.

Caller: Mr. Levin, you're a great American.
Mark: That's true.

I heard when Dubya first got up this a.m. he still wasn't sure who he would pick. So thanks for your prayers!

I think he's an excellent pick who comes across well on television. He has good character, solid beliefs, and impecable qualifications to be a good jurist. Its going to be hard for the Left to attack John G. Roberts. He's like a guy straight out of central casting. My only thought is he would be a better President than a judge but we should be thrilled to have him on the Supreme Court! Note to the Left: you losers don't get to dictate Supreme Court nominees to the President. When you start winning elections, THEN you can shape the court's direction. With at least one and possibly two retirements from the SCOTUS in the future, the President stands poised to remake the court's face. I always knew what I wanted in a judge and heck he ain't Robert Bork but the circumstances in which this man was named are very different from those in President Reagan's day. I think The Gipper is smiling up there somewhere!

Trust me the Buchananites and third party voters on FR will be rushing in to tell us this is the worst US Supreme Court nominee ever.

I agree with Pat Buchanan on many issues, but I'm cautiously optimistic about this nominee. When I've heard a little more, I'll likely write to my senators expressing support and insisting on a vote.

Bill

I think this is a really good choice. Of course the radical, foaming at the mouth liberals will flip---good, let the fools go wild. I think he will be confirmed by a solid majority. I am very pleased with W's choice, good job!!!

Not sure what the problem is. Judges should rule based on the law and the constitution, not their own personal views.

"By moving the court solidly right, he has increased the pressure on Stevens and Ruth Buzzi to beat it. Who wants to be on the losing side all the time? Look for one of them (or both) to bail. This was beyond a home run. Lindsay Graham was on Hannity talking like Attila the Hun, warning the Dems that they did NOT include a USSC pick as an "extraordinary circumstance."

I agree. Solidly. Fully.

When I heard that President Bush was announcing his choice during Prime Time (rather than sneaking someone in at 5:30 on a Friday), I posted that a Prime Time announcement meant that GWB was *picking* a fight with the Dems.

This is in-your-face politics, and I love it!

Stevens is old, by the way. Ginsberg is ailing. Rehnquist will soon retire. At a minimum, President Bush will place 4 new Justices onto the SCOTUS.

Young justices, too. By 2008 we'll see a court makeup that won't change ideologically for 30 years...possibly longer.

I still believe rehnquist will retire before the next term. I wouldn't be surprised if the White House got rehnquist to hold off...even mislead a little...until this first nominee is confirmed (or at least cleared for a floor vote).

So, the real question is what in the world will Bush do for his next SCOTUS pick? I personally hope he goes a bit more to the right rather than to the left toward Gonzales.

Then, again, we'll see what happens on this present pick first.

Just checked DU. They don't like his haircut. They'll be shut down tomorrow night for maintenance.

Here's another post one of them made:

"Honestly, Bush will appoint someone. And eventually, one will get confirmed. So who did we expect?

"We know he will appoint a conservative. We know we're going to get someone on the court whom we will disagree with on several key issues.

"Roberts is anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action, and anti-environmentalist. Still, I wonder if we should just take what we can get. He's no Ashcroft at least...

"The confirmation hearing should be nasty, definitely. I want this guy dragged over the fucking coals in front of the nation. But the sad fact is that he will eventually be confirmed. But we might as well air his dirty laundry to the nation so the public will see how little the Republicans care for their opinions.

"My choice: pick our battles. I want Rove to stay in the spotlight. I want the disaster in Iraq to stay in the spotlight. I don't want the headlines turning from those issues into story after story about "obstructionist" Democrats."

It gets even more fun.
Senators up for re-election in red states - like the forced retirement of Senator Byrd?
Let's see which Liberal Senators will jump from their gravy train to fight this?
I'm betting only the "safe" ones dare - and Hillary won't be fighting - she'll "reflect" and "agonize" so as not to appear extreme.
What a fun time this will be!

"Roe v. Wade was 7-2. Rehnquist and Byron "Whizzer" White (a Kennedy Dem) were the dissenters."

Are you for real?

Oh man, I was way wrong on that, sorry. Do you have a source?

That's what I said-Roberts will do, but he's no Clarence Thomas.
