Beginning in the early seventies, when it first declared that homosexuality was not a psychiatric illness but perfectly normal and healthy behavior, the American Psychiatric Association has given its seal of approval to every imaginable form of sexual behavior once considered aberrant or pathological. Last year, for example, the association published a study asserting that pedophilia wasn't a mental disorder—unless the pedophile found himself stressed out by his condition or unable to work or have meaningful relationships. This May in Chicago, further evidence of this troubling trend revealed itself at an APA conference workshop: "Is Homophobia a Mental Illness?"—as indeed the use of the term to describe those who disapprove of homosexuality implies. The politicized tenor of the session revealed itself from the outset, when two of the four male panelists kissed each other on the lips immediately prior to the presentations—exhibiting a provocative attitude toward appropriate professional behavior, if nothing else. To the extent one could glean a definition of homophobia from the confused panelists—as a scientific or theoretical discussion, the session didn't rise above the high school level—it seemed to be simply this: to oppose the agenda of homosexual-rights activism, or even to disapprove of homosexual acts means that one is mentally ill..."

"Those who discount the effect of systemic bias and political correctness in academia, such as Professor Mary Coombs of the University of Miami Law School, are willfully ignorant, if not dishonest. Coombs argues, somewhat like my former colleagues, that only pro-gay articles are published in academic journals because the other side is so bereft of substance. While that notion may suit her own intellectual vanity, it overlooks mounting evidence to the contrary.
At a recent meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA), for example, former APA President Robert Perloff denounced the organization as "too politically correct" and beholden to special interests. He noted that the organization had tried to prevent research into "conversion therapy" (therapy to change one's sexual orientation) and had tried to label it "unethical" a priori, even when the patient wants conversion therapy.
The APA blocked presentations from researchers on whether sexual orientation can be changed through counseling and therapy, yet it published controversial research suggesting that sex between children and adults may not be harmful and then styled itself a defender of academic freedom (prompting both houses of Congress to take the unusual step of passing a unanimous resolution of condemnation).
Meanwhile, the American Psychiatric Association [not to be confused with APA, which is American Psychological Association] offered luridly titled presentations on counseling aspiring transsexuals.
This creates a rather bizarre contrast. On the one hand, "mainstream" academic/professional organizations publish research suggesting adult- child sex may not be harmful, and they endorse supportive therapy for individuals who wish to surgically alter themselves (some would say physically mutilate themselves) from one sex to the other. Yet, they denounce as unethical any healthcare professionals who offer therapy to homosexuals who wish to become heterosexuals.
In other words, it is ethical to counsel a man to have his penis removed so he can have sex as a heterosexual woman, but it's unethical to counsel a man to have sex as a heterosexual man even if he wants to have sex as a typical man...
Even Byne concedes that gay activists, specifically gay psychiatrists and psychologists, have likely produced biased research on gay parenting. However, that bias exists not only within the research produced by gay activists themselves; instead, the bias is exerted against publication of any research that does not conform to pro-gay orthodoxy. In fact, the most consistent theme among the articles in this volume is that a pervasive bias exists against those who stray from pro-gay orthodoxy.
Many libertarians, myself included, debate the role of public morality versus individual liberty, but disputes about sexual mores are no longer the central issue in the gay rights debate. Instead, the greater threat to individual liberties comes from gay activists themselves, many of whom seem to view the slightest deviation from pro-gay orthodoxy as something akin to religious heresy.
The work of Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the reviewers of the Rekers article, is an example of this phenomenon. Dr. Spitzer is perhaps best known for his role in removing homosexuality from classification as a mental disorder, and he was widely hailed as a hero by the gay rights community thereafter. But in the fall of 2000 he announced preliminary results from research on re-orientation therapy, i.e., therapy to change homosexuals to heterosexuals, wherein he found evidence that change was possible, at least in some cases.
The reaction was swift and hyperbolic. The communications director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, whose scientific expertise consisted of having worked as a newspaper reporter, intoned that Spitzer's work was "snake oil" and "scientific bunk."
The Human Rights Campaign accused Spitzer of "anti-gay views, close ties to right-wing political groups and [a] lack of objective data," and a psychologist at the Lesbian and Gay Service Center said "she cannot believe Columbia would allow any of its professors to do anything like this." As a Wall Street Journal editorial noted, no one called Spitzer a quack back in 1973 when he spearheaded the effort to de-classify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Yet he quickly became a pariah among gay activists when he deviated ever-so-slightly from the party line.
Dr. Spitzer's treatment illustrates the rampant extremism and intolerance among gay rights activists toward those who dare question their orthodoxy. In an interview for this essay, Dr. Spitzer reported that a colleague at Columbia objected that merely conducting the research was "unethical," and that same colleague later formally complained to Columbia's Institutional Review Board that it should not have approved the research. Dr. Spitzer has since submitted the article for publication, and he reports that he expects the article to be rejected due to the biases of the journal. Fortunately, another journal has already expressed interest in publishing the research.
As Dr. Spitzer explained, it is very easy for a gay-activist journal staff to torpedo a non-conforming article merely by assigning the article to hostile peer reviewers. Similarly, private and government funding agencies, which ostensibly fund research on scientific merit, can be subverted merely by assigning biased reviewers to the funding committees. Unlike the voir dire process for selecting jurors, establishment science has no process for vetting the fairness of peer reviewers. In fact, peer reviewers are often anonymous.
Yet, when non-conforming researchers are forced to turn to alternative venues for publication, that fact is held against them insofar as their work is not published in a "mainstream" peer-reviewed journal..."

A plan by a German zoo to test the sexual appetites of a group of suspected homosexual penguins has sparked outrage among gay and lesbian groups, who fear zookeepers might force them to turn straight.
"All sorts of gay and lesbian associations have been e-mailing and calling in to protest," said a spokesman for the zoo in the northwestern city of Bremerhaven on Friday.
He said the zoo concluded the penguins might be gay after seeing male penguins trying to mate with other males and trying to hatch offspring out of stones.
German media reported that female Swedish penguins would be brought to the zoo to test the theory, but when word got out about the plan, the phones started ringing.
"Nobody here is trying to break-up same sex pairs by force," the zoo's director Heike Kueck told public broadcaster NDR. "We don't know if the three male pairs are really gay or just got together because of a lack of females."

Rare and Aggressive H.I.V. Reported in New York
"A rare strain of H.I.V. that is highly resistant to virtually all anti-retroviral drugs and appears to lead to the rapid onset of AIDS was detected in a New York City man last week, city health officials announced on Friday.
It was the first time a strain of H.I.V. had been found that both showed resistance to multiple drugs and led to AIDS so quickly, the officials said. While the extent of the disease's spread is unknown, officials called a news conference to say that the situation is alarming.
"We consider this a major potential problem," said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The department issued an alert to all hospitals and doctors in the city to test all newly detected H.I.V. cases for evidence of the rare strain.
The virus was found in a New York City man in his mid-40's who engaged in unprotected anal sex with other men on multiple occasions while he was using crystal methamphetamine. Health officials have long said that the drug's stimulating effect and erasure of inhibitions contributes to sex marathons that have increased the spread of H.I.V....
"This case is a wake-up call," Dr. Frieden said. "First, it's a wake-up call to men who have sex with men, particularly those who may use crystal methamphetamine. Not only are we seeing syphilis and a rare sexually transmitted disease - lymphogranuloma venereum - among these men. "Now we've identified this strain of H.I.V. that is difficult or impossible to treat and which appears to progress rapidly to AIDS."
The man, whose name was not released to protect his privacy, is believed to have had unprotected sex with hundreds of partners, according to one person briefed on the case who insisted on anonymity because the investigation is continuing...
From the moment the Health Department learned about this case on Jan. 22, its scientists have been studying complex laboratory tests to decipher the patterns of resistance, and epidemiologists have tried to trace the man's sexual partners and notify them of the potential risk.
In May 2003, the man tested negative for H.I.V., health officials said. Attorney Claims Lesbian Teachers Using Schools to Push Homosexual Lifestyle
A California school district may be taken to court after a group of high school teachers began blatantly promoting homosexuality in their classrooms.
Recently a group of lesbian teachers in the Scotts Valley Unified School District (Santa Cruz County) started hanging pro-homosexual posters in their classrooms, discussing homosexuality in their classrooms, and providing referrals to homosexual and bisexual organizations to students questioning their sexuality. Numerous parents have complained to school officials, who said they would investigate matters. However, no administrative correction has been initiated in response to the complaints.
Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, says the teachers are engaged in a campaign of homosexual indoctrination, and are using anti-harassment laws as a soapbox for state-sponsored endorsement of their lifestyle. And they seem to be getting the support to do so, not only from the district, but from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and area homosexual organizations as well.
"We know it's a very liberal community," Dacus notes, "a very hostile, intolerant community for the rights of parents, and intolerant towards those people of faith who do not openly accept and embrace homosexuality and other forms of deviant lifestyles." Although he says PJI is not really expecting the Santa Cruz County school officials to implement changes, he says his legal group is "hoping they'll take it under serious consideration."
The PJI attorney feels the school district is being hypocritical since, even as the teachers are engaging in their pro-homosexual conduct under the guise of tolerance, posters celebrating traditional families are not allowed. However, he points out that complaints from outraged parents have had virtually no effect on the school administrators.
The officials have even ignored requests from district parents that the pro-homosexual posters be taken out of the classrooms and pinned instead on public bulletin boards where a student would have the option of reading or ignoring them, or that they be placed alongside posters showing competing viewpoints.
A Hostile Environment for Pro-Family Values A number of the dissenting parents have argued that the students are a captive audience being forced to confront high-pressure influence from militantly pro-homosexual teachers who stand in a position of authority over them, as well as from aggressive homosexual students. According to PJI's sources, a student who is not interested in joining a "diversity club" at school is sometimes subjected to obscene gestures and other forms of harassment from homosexual peers.
According to Dacus, what is happening in some of the district schools is that pro-homosexual teachers are being allowed to create a hostile environment for students who hold faith-based or traditional values that regard homosexuality as immoral. "Pro-homosexual indoctrination, unfortunately, has become not the exception but almost the rule for most California schools as well as for other schools in liberal parts of this country," he says.
But while homosexual groups and the ACLU reportedly claim this type of tolerance and diversity education is needed for schools to comply with anti-harassment laws, the head of PJI says this is misleading. He contends that U.S. lawmakers never meant to enable teachers or school officials to use the anti-harassment legislation as a tool for promoting homosexuality through the public education system.
Nevertheless, Dacus asserts, it is happening and cannot be ignored. "Parents need to wake up," he says, "and they need to realize that public education can actually be a very harmful, very damaging thing for their children if they're not careful." However, the attorney reminds pro-family citizens that anti-harassment laws were not written exclusively for homosexuals but to apply equally to all Americans, including those who hold traditional values.
PJI sent an attorney to address the trustees of the Scotts Valley School Board at a meeting held last Monday, which focused exclusively on the poster controversy. At the heart of the discussion was a complaint filed more than two years ago by a district parent regarding the display of the pro-homosexual posters in district classrooms. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that more than 400 people attended the February 7 school board meeting, which went on until almost 11 p.m.
The Scotts Valley School Board took no action, but board president Sue Roth and Superintendent Stephen Fiss planned to meet again to discuss the issue further. Roth was quoted in the Sentinel as saying she is not sure anything needs to be done, but she would hope the parent who filed the initial complaint will not pursue a lawsuit.
