Stocks rose sharply in volatile trading on Wednesday as surges in retail and energy shares helped Wall Street regain the steep losses suffered in the previous session.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 657 points higher as of 3:05 p.m. ET, while the S&P 500 gained 3.05 percent. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed, rising 3.96 percent. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were on track for their biggest one-day gains since Aug. 26, 2015 and erased Monday's losses. The Dow also recovered all of its losses from Monday.

"Quantitative easing" started phasing out three years ago.
Now, the FED is in a phase of "quantitative tightening." At its peak it held more than $4 trillion in U.S. government bonds and mortgage-backed securities. A few years ago it began reducing its holdings in those assets, and is now off-loading them at the rate of $50 billion per month.
THIS -- not a silly 0.25% increase in the FED discount rate -- is what is driving the correction in the market.

I believe the money spent over Christmas is smashing all projections. My guess is that on line sales were spectacular. I do Amazon all the time. It’s just so damn easy.

It’s almost funny. A few Dems are eating crow....but they’ll turn it around and say that Powell is responsible...just the opposite of what the big boys say.

Correct. Buy and hold is my strategy. Dollar cost averaging.
Only time I sold any stock at all was to pay off my son's college education. I kick myself even for that.
When I retire, I'll take an annuity and whatever is left over after I die, my wife and kids can have. But I plan to have a lot of fun in between.

My son gave me a $250 Amazon gift card for Christmas. I’m 75...so running around in stores is to much work.

In all honesty, you might want to think long and hard about an annuity. Likely you can merely harvest the capital gains and dividends of equities, and nearly equal the payout of an annuity.
And then your heirs will still have the principle to inherit.
I’ve learned a lot from the folks on this site.
