Only time I sold any stock at all was to pay off my son's college education. I kick myself even for that.
When I retire, I'll take an annuity and whatever is left over after I die, my wife and kids can have. But I plan to have a lot of fun in between.
In all honesty, you might want to think long and hard about an annuity. Likely you can merely harvest the capital gains and dividends of equities, and nearly equal the payout of an annuity.
And then your heirs will still have the principle to inherit.
