Doctors have treated only three leukemia patients, but the sensational results from a single shot could be one of the most significant advances in cancer research in decades. And it almost never happened. In the research published Wednesday, doctors at the University of Pennsylvania say the treatment made the most common type of leukemia completely disappear in two of the patients and reduced it by 70 percent in the third. In each of the patients as much as five pounds of cancerous tissue completely melted away in a few weeks, and a year later it is still gone

As the husband of. 2 time cancer survivor, I am admittedly biased. However, I will say that while a cure is indeed the desire, the new treatments are leaps forward. Our oncologyst says there’s new, more effective treatments about every 3 years. And, we actually experienced just that. Your donations are greatly appreciated by this FReeper. you have a great insight on this - it is too bad that the decisions made by volunteer groups in America, those that help others in need, especially as this story points out a research funding charity...private money help othes - a dynamic society.
Its definitely a miracle but if you are over 60 Obamacare will probably not let you have it. You are supposed to sit in a corner and die. It would probably have saved my Dad.

If you don’t believe the scientific and medical correlation, check the data on case growth from 1980 on.
Compare that to number of cases from 1950 to 1980.
Truth is, most of that money goes to Planned Parenthood and LGBT groups. (To erase the stigma associated with the behavior that causes the problem!)
This is actually pretty cool...hope they can continue the research on it and open it up to more trials. When I was studying cell physiology as an undergrad, I researched several concepts of using the “non-lethal” or “non-infectious” portions of viruses as well bacteria (such as Bacillus anthracis - the bacteria that produces the toxin which causes the disease known as Anthrax)to carry disease fighting information into various immune cells...that was back in the late 90’s. There has been, and obviously continues to be, some fascinating research into this area of Cell physiology. It is quite amazing stuff!!!! Seeing stuff on that small of a level...seeing the absolute miracle of life in the “nano” world makes you realize that there is no way in H E double toothpicks that life on this planet as we know it just happened to spring up from a pool of gook after it took a shock from lighting *smiles*!

No offense but you’ve been misled by cycles of hype and hysteria, plus much over-simplification in the media.
There has been enormous progress in many areas of research and treatments for various cancers, but it is a vast and varied set of targets. Many lives (including my own) have been saved and/or dramatically extended. A lot depends upon the specifics of diagnosis, cell types involved, stage of the cancer etc. but there has been much progress indeed.
However, “cancer” refers to well over 100 different major illnesses with many sub-categories and varied types of cell pathologies.
Expectations for some one or few “magic bullet” types of treatment to cure all cancers have always been myopic at best.
That does not mean there are not great strides made, usually by intense focus upon a specific category or sub-category involving one particular type of cell.
In my own case (8 year cancer survivor now) I owe my life to a combo of chemo drugs that did not exist too many years ago. 30+ years ago I would have died rapidly and horribly of the type of carcinoma I was dealing with. Everyone in human history (before the past 30 years) who had my specific condition would have died within 12-18 months.
Large numbers of patients have been saved and/or had lives much extended, but we tend to hear/read mainly of fatalities and of the most horrific choices people may face (take on the most brutal chemos for possibly only a few months more life and/or in horrible misery etc.).
I can’t tell anyone how to donate their money, but the idea that there has been no significant progress is simply mistaken.
I wonder if they could do the same with fat cells.

of course chemo regimens are often brutal (mine was, taking me to the brink of death from the chemo itself), but combos of chemo and/or radiation and/or surgery, as appropriate, have helped large numbers of patients in recent years....
one hopes that new approaches in research and testing will succeed in many cases with avoidance of the grueling effects of chemo-radiation-surgery, which are all frequently too broad-brush un-targeted approaches to treatment
e.g., the more severe chemo regimens can kill ALL fast-growing cells in the body and not just the ones involved in the cancer, which is why terrible side effects are too often associated with chemo

come to think of it, the end of this month is my ninth anniversary since my last treatment (surgery) in Aug. 2002
most survivors mark progress from their date of diagnosis, but I like to mark it from the date of my last treatment — which was end of August 2002
