Jim Hansen is the 'grandfather of climate change' and one of the world's leading climatologists. In this rare interview in New York, he explains why President Obama's administration is the last chance to avoid flooded cities, species extinction and climate catastropheRobin McKie, science editor The Observer, Sunday 18 January 2009 Article historyAlong one wall of Jim Hansen's wood-panelled office in upper Manhattan, the distinguished climatologist has pinned 10 A4-sized photographs of his three grandchildren: Sophie, Connor and Jake. They are the only personal items on display in an office otherwise dominated by stacks of manila folders, bundles of papers and cardboard boxes filled with reports on climate variations and atmospheric measurements.
The director of Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York is clearly a doting grandfather as well as an internationally revered climate scientist. Yet his pictures are more than mere expressions of familial love. They are reminders to the 67-year-old scientist of his duty to future generations, children whom he now believes are threatened by a global greenhouse catastrophe that is spiralling out of control because of soaring carbon dioxide emissions from industry and transport.

“Jim Hansen is the ‘grandfather of climate change’ and one of the world’s leading climatologists.”

The two clauses of this sentence are mutually exclusive.
I’m convinced this Hansen will be exposed by history as an unscientific sham.
Frst, his alarmist claims do not seem to be supported by other scientists or even by the weather.
Second, this nonsense about the US “leading” is extremely unscientific, when China and India are on track to surpass us in carbon emissions and have no plan to do anything about it. Add in the rest of the World and it’s rather obvious the US can’t do much about this and certainly not in a 4 year time frame.
Even IF this guy is an expert on climate, he is out of his league when he starts talking about geopolitics.
Tax, spend, tax, spend, blame Bush/Republicans, repeat.
You are only leading if someone follows. Otherwise, you just wandered off...
“’We have only four years left to act on climate change”
Or else what?
A 60 degree January couldn’t happen fast enough for me.
VENEZUELA: Chavez calls for global offensive for socialism
August 31, 2005
excerpts...
"The environment is suffering damage that could be irreversible global warming, the greenhouse effect, the melting of the polar ice caps, the rising sea level, hurricanes with terrible social occurrences that will shake life on this planet."
"I believe this idea has a strong connection with reality. I don't think we have much time. Fidel Castro said in one of his speeches I read not so long ago, 'tomorrow could be too late, let's do now what we need to do'."
"I believe it is time that we take up with courage and clarity a political, social, collective and ideological offensive across the world a real offensive that permits us to move progressively, over the next years, the next decades, leaving behind the perverse, destructive, destroyer, capitalist model and go forward in constructing the socialist model to avoid barbarism and beyond that the annihilation of life on this planet."
--Hugo Chavez, at the 16th World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Caracas on August 8-15, 2005
James Hansen (quote), from October 2004:
"Several years ago I received the Heinz Environment Award. I don't know who nominated me for that award or how the selection works."
"I am confident that it has no impact on my evaluation of the climate problem or on my political leanings."
"In the upcoming election I will vote for John Kerry."

Major LOLing going on over here. I'll steal that for my new tagline.
Looks like a great tag line to me!
4th post, different sources.
Ideological shills such as the author, far too many of whom refer to themselves as journalists and/or scientists, do an extreme dis-service to the body politic and the body of knowledge by un-substantiated rants such as McKie's. If one wants to demonstrate that a situation is deterioting, one must first establish a base-line that is scientifically provable, not by consensus but by science. Contemporary journalists, and others of others of similar ilk, might refer to a dictionary to learn the difference between those two words. Once that scientific base-line is established, deviations from the base-line can be observed and conclusions drawn about the direction and benefits(including negative benefits)of the deviation.
The good news, from my perspective, is that the fools in the media have been so demonstrably biased and extreme that readership of print and eye-balls on the various screens are in a free-fall. Their respective landings will not have the experienced and tender hands of Capt. Sullenberger. The media will go bankrupt financially just as, years ago, they have gone professionally.
The inventor of the Muppets is a climatologist??? (sarc ON)
