Canandaigua, NY--Local shoppers have been watching their grocery bills increase for months, but some relief is on the way.
In anticipation of lower fuel and production costs, Wegmans has cut prices on hundreds of items, with reductions ranging from 10 to 30 percent.
Signs will go up today and over the weekend pointing customers to the lower-cost items, said spokeswoman Jo Natale.
In a message posted on the company Web site, owners Danny and Colleen Wegman said the price cuts were made in anticipation of Wegmans costs falling in the future. They said they dont mind making a little less money during difficult times.
While gas prices are down, along with the cost of corn, wheat and soybeans, food prices have remained high. Wegmans and other companies locked into contracts when costs were up out of concern that theyd go even higher, the company said.
The Wegmans price cuts are expected to save consumers $12 million a year, or $40 to $60 a month for an average family, Natale said.

Don’t tell GM, they don’t know the way to increase sells is to cut price.
Prices of other things will be coming down shortly too, but of course none will noticed until Obama takes the oath and then it will all be because of him.
We saw all this with Clinton.
Or make a car that isn’t cr@p.
Bingo.....
don't think GM knows how to do that yet, it's all about the break down so the dealer can put one in you.
Did the wegmans mention how many employees they would be losing after 0 introduces his new tax the “wealthy” scam?
I love Wegmens, but we stopped shopping there when realized were were paying nearly $5 for a loaf of italian bread. Guess companies like Wegmens and Starbucks finally noticed that consumers are not willing to pay thru the nose everyday items.
The recession isn’t the reason for the price cuts, it’s drop in fuel prices and presumably eventually in food prices.
The recession is part of the slowing of the economy which, in turn, creates less demand for oil. Less demand for oil means lower fuel costs. Lower fuel costs translate into lower prices.

Birdseed. I need cheaper birdseed.
Who stole the strawberries?
The increased food/commodity prices this year were mainly due to increased fuel, thus transportation, costs.
To remain competitive, store should start dropping prices.
I saw many food items jump from 25-75% locally in the last 8 months. They did seem to stabilize a couple of months ago, but they are still substantially higher than even a year ago.
I did laugh a couple of weeks ago. Went to the Walmart Supercenter. They had some small old, shriveled cantaloupes — marked at $2.68 a piece. No wonder they were shriveled — at that price.
And after deflation runs it course?
Stock up.
...the free market at work.
So if the Federal Reserve creates a recession by inverting the yield curve, is that the free market at work?
I loved Wegman’s when I lived in upstate NY. That was years ago and thankfully the bread wasn’t that much. There french bread was excellent.
For those who don’t know:
Wegmans is a northeastern grocery store chain featuring stores so large and impressive that area residents will actually take visitors there for sightseeing.
Anyone that has a WinCo grocery store knows about very low prices on almost everything. They can be beat on advertized specials or loss leaders, but are much lower on virtually everything else.
