The recession isn’t the reason for the price cuts, it’s drop in fuel prices and presumably eventually in food prices.

The recession is part of the slowing of the economy which, in turn, creates less demand for oil. Less demand for oil means lower fuel costs. Lower fuel costs translate into lower prices.

...the free market at work.
