Berlin fears German being groomed as suicide bomber
Police fear that a convert, Eric B, 20, is being groomed by Jihadists to become the first German suicide bomber, according to the news magazine Der Spiegel on Saturday. German police had lost track of B several weeks ago in the wilds in or near Afghanistan, where he was in training with Islamic Jihad Union (IJU), an Uzbek-origin terrorist group regarded as just as threatening as Arab-based al-Qaeda.
The news magazine said the fears were based on a recent IJU claim of responsibility which included a photograph of two men: Said Kurdi, the nom de guerre of a man who blew himself up in the Afghan city of Jalalabad, and B, with the implication that B might do likewise.
The two men were shown kneeling in the open air next to an IJU banner. The image was obtained in Berlin last Tuesday.
B is a native of Germany's western state of Saarland.

Source of drug-tolerant TB possibly behind TB relapses
University of Pittsburgh-led researchers discovered that the primary bacteria behind tuberculosis can grow on surfaces and that drug-tolerant strains flourish in these bacterial communities, the research team recently reported in Molecular Microbiology. The findings suggest a possible reason why human tuberculosis (TB) requires months of intensive antibiotic treatment and indicate a potential cause of the relapses that can nonetheless occur.

Female suicide bomber targets soccer fans in Baghdad
Soccer jihad — fan of the China team? “Female suicide bomber strikes soccer fans in Iraq,” by Kim Gamel for Associated Press, June 14 (thanks to JCB):
BAGHDAD - A female suicide bomber targeted a crowd of soccer fans celebrating Iraq’s win in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, wounding at least 34 people near a cafe north of Baghdad, police said.
The young woman, who was covered in a traditional black Islamic robe, was dropped off by a car shortly before the attack as dozens of cheering young men poured out onto the streets after watching Iraq beat China 2-1 on television in the cafe in the town of Qara Tappah.
The woman told suspicious police that she was waiting for her husband but blew herself up after an officer spotted the detonator and began screaming at the crowd to disperse, according to the town’s top administrator, Serwan Shukir.
Seven police and 27 civilians were among the wounded, Shukir said, but the officer’s warning had averted a higher casualty toll by preventing the woman from reaching the bulk of the fans.
Police Capt. Najib Khourshid said she was about 20 yards away from the crowd when the blast occurred.
“About 100 people were in the cafe and we went out to celebrate the victory after the match. Minutes later, a big explosion took place near us,” said Salman Hameed, who was wounded in his chest and right hand. “The female bomber has spoiled our joy and celebration.”...

“Terror accused told to kill 1,000, Australian court told”
Feb. 13, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MELBOURNE (AFP) A Muslim “terrorist organisation” was urged by their leader to target football matches or a train station in Australia in a bid to kill 1,000 people, a court heard Wednesday.
A group of 12 men pleaded not guilty to a string of terrorism-related charges amid tight security in the Victorian Supreme Court.
Their alleged leader, cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 47, had suggested during taped telephone calls that a bombing where the maximum loss of life could be inflicted, such as at a football ground, could be suitable, the court heard.
Benbrika taught the group that it was “permissible to kill women, children and the aged” in the cause of violent jihad or holy war, said prosecutor Richard Maidment.
Maidment said the case was about “a home-grown terrorist organisation” and that Benbrika had urged the group to do “something big” to pressure the Australian government to take its troops out of Iraq.
“If you kill here a thousand, the government is going to think, because if you get large numbers here, the government will listen,” Maidment said Benbrika told fellow-accused Abdullah Merhi in a conversation intercepted by police.
In another conversation with an undercover police officer who infiltrated the group, Benbrika asked if he could be shown how to make explosives using ammonium nitrate, the prosecutor said.
He had asked how much was required to destroy a house and then wanted to know “how much to destroy a larger building.”
The prosecutor also said that material, including literature on how to make bombs, and video tapes with messages from Osama Bin Laden, was seized from the group by police.”

“China missile test”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “China recently conducted a test of its newest submarine-launched ballistic missile, the Julang-2 (JL-2), which will be deployed on Beijing’s fleet of new missile submarines, according to U.S. defense officials.
The test launch took place May 29 from a submarine in Bohai Bay, off northern China, and landed in the Yellow Sea.
The missile has an estimated range of about 5,000 miles and represents a new generation of strategic nuclear-capable weapons being outfitted on the Type 094 submarine, dubbed the Jin-class by the Pentagon.
One defense official said the new JL-2 “shares features with the land-based Dong Feng-31 missile,” another new Chinese nuclear missile system.”
