Source of drug-tolerant TB possibly behind TB relapses
University of Pittsburgh-led researchers discovered that the primary bacteria behind tuberculosis can grow on surfaces and that drug-tolerant strains flourish in these bacterial communities, the research team recently reported in Molecular Microbiology. The findings suggest a possible reason why human tuberculosis (TB) requires months of intensive antibiotic treatment and indicate a potential cause of the relapses that can nonetheless occur.
At least 3 shot near US-Mexico border
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that ambulances were sent to the scene near Campo, Calif. at about 10:20 Friday night to treat at least three shooting victims, according to a dispatcher with the Heartland Fire Authority.
The identity and condition of the victims was not immediately clear.
The California Highway Patrol told the newspaper that an undetermined number of people were shot on the Mexican side of the border and came across to the U.S. side.
Border Patrol seizes 680 pounds of pot near Campo
A Border Patrol spokesman says agents spotted a shredded tire on the Isuzu Trooper and began following it Thursday morning on state Route 94 when the driver made a sudden turn toward a dirt road. The driver parked the car near the border.
The spokesman says agents pulled up to the vehicle and saw three men unloading bundles. When the men spotted the agents they dropped the packages and ran to Mexico.
