Critical Threats: Blank When None
Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. Case with radioactive material stolen in Spain

Spain's nuclear watchdog appealed to the public on Tuesday to return a yellow case stolen from a car because it contained radioactive material.

"It could represent a risk if the equipment is opened or destroyed as it would leave the source (of radiation) without protection," said the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).

CSN said the material would not represent a risk if the case remained shut. It was part of equipment used to measure density and humidity levels belonging to ICAES, a company based near Madrid which carries out quality tests on construction sites.

Jailed terrorists are using the internet to contact supporters

Terror suspects held at one of Britain's most secure jails are secretly accessing the internet to contact their supporters.

The discovery raises fears that some of the UK's most dangerous terrorists could be plotting new attacks from inside prison.

Men steal bullet parts intended for Iraq

The US Attorney's office said the two Lake City Army Ammunition Plant employees were stealing bullet cups used to make 7.62 millimeter rounds for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"It's not very often that someone dares to interrupt the flow of ammunition to the troops," John Cowles, Asst. US Attorney said.

Cowles said the stolen copper would have made 1.5 million rounds of ammo, about two weeks worth of production at the plant. The suspects made more than $45,000 from selling it but now they face sabotage of war materials charges, which could mean as much as 30 years in federal prison.

Will Canada's latest human rights triumph convince you to visit there?

Datt wouldn't wash her hands. She just wouldn't -- she said she couldn't. So her employment was terminated. The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal ordered that McDonald's pay her not only $23,000 for "lost income", but an additional $25,000 for her "dignity and self-respect". You see, in B.C. a food preparation worker's self-respect trumps a company's commitment to cleanliness. They violated her "human rights". The $50,000+ penalty -- plus several years of legal fees and medical and rehab experts -- isn't the worst of it. Inventing a "human right" for a worker to go to the bathroom and then to handle meat without washing her hands in between, as an excuse for that $50,000 shakedown isn't the worst of it either.

The worst of it is that the BCHRT has ordered that McDonald's, in paragraph 298 of the decision, to "cease the discriminatory conduct or any similar conduct and refrain from committing the same or similar contravention."

Yuk.

No, I visited Canada shortly before 9/11 and had an interesting experience.
I’m not visiting again.

That said, what a great group of Canadians here on FR, and around the internet and on Free Dominion.

I’m not visiting again.

We visited Canada two years ago and have no reason to revisit. With the devalued dollar, our money is better spent at home.

I totally agree about our treasured Canadian group posting here on FR.

“Nuclear attack on D.C. a hypothetical disaster”
By Gary Emerling
April 16, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”It’s inevitable,” said Cham E. Dallas, director of the Institute for Health Management and Mass Destruction Defense at the University of Georgia, who has charted the potential explosion’s effect in the District and testified before a hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. “I think it’s wistful to think that it won’t happen by 20 years.”

The Senate committee has convened a series of hearings to examine the threat and effects of a terrorist nuclear attack on a U.S. city, as well as the needed response.”

“Abbas honors Sbarro killer’s driver”
By JPOST.COM STAFF

SNIPPET: “The Al Kuds Mark of Honor, the PLO’s highest medal, will be given to two female terrorists who helped kill Israelis, Israel Radio reported Wednesday.

PHOTO CAPTION: “Suicide bombing in downtown Jerusalem, 2001. Ahlam Tamimi, who drove the suicide bomber to the restaurant, is slated to receive a medal sanctioned by PA President Mahmoud Abbas.”
Photo: Ariel Jerozolimski
SLIDESHOW: Pictures of the week

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Ahlam Tamimi, a Hamas affiliate serving a life sentence for driving the suicide bomber who exploded himself in the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem, killing at least half a dozen people, including a whole family and Amra Muna, who seduced Ophir Rahum over the Internet and then lured him to Ramallah where he was murdered, will both be awarded the medal.

Conferring the Al Kuds Mark of Honor is decided at the discretion of the Palestinian Authority’s president, and he alone has the final say when choosing the Palestinians to be honored with the medal.

Palestinian Minister for Prisoner Affairs Ashraf el Ajami told Israel Radio that his ministry gave PA President Mahmoud Abbas a comprehensive list of prisoners and his office chose the nominees from this list.

Ajami refused to confirm that the medal would be given to Tamimi and Muna, saying that he didn’t want to “ruin the surprise” for the families attending the ceremony scheduled for Thursday.

Abbas himself was en route to Russia and his staff refused to comment on the report.”

“High alert to peak over the weekend”
By YAAKOV KATZ

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The high level of alert at Israeli missions and institutions around the world will reach its peak this weekend, as Pessah begins and Jews gather across the globe for celebrations.

Terror alert declared in Sinai
Senior officials said the defense establishment’s preparations for a possible Hizbullah attack in response to the February assassination of arch-terrorist Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus would be at its highest over the holiday.

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has in recent weeks completed beefing up security personnel on Israeli civilian aircraft and in Israeli embassies and consulates.

Ahead of the holiday, the Counter-Terrorism Bureau in the Prime Minister’s Office issued a severe travel advisory warning of an “imminent” attack against Israelis vacationing in Sinai. On Tuesday, Egyptian security officials said they were hunting a number of terror cells in Sinai that were planning to attack a tourist site. Reportedly, gunmen atop four pick-up trucks plan to attack a tourist resort.

“The warnings need to be taken seriously, since the threats against Israeli tourists in Sinai are real and serious,” Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday in Sderot, where he laid the cornerstone for a new Elbit Systems factory. In the afternoon, Barak decided to impose a full closure on the West Bank starting Friday night and lasting until after Pessah on Sunday, April 27.

According to the travel advisory, recent intelligence has revealed plans by terrorists to target Israelis - 10,000 of whom are expected to travel there - on the Sinai beaches during Pessah. Travelers who have yet to cross the border are encouraged to cancel their plans, and those currently in Egypt are advised to return to Israel immediately.”

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed Apr 16 2008 03:37:00 GMT-0700 (PDT).

SYRIA

April 15, 2008

This Travel Warning alerts U.S. citizens to ongoing safety and security concerns in Syria. American citizens are urged to thoroughly consider the risks of travel to Syria and to take adequate precautions to ensure their safety. This supersedes the Travel Warning for Syria issued on September 18, 2007.

A number of terrorist groups that oppose U.S. policies have offices in Syria. Since 1979, the United States has designated Syria a State Sponsor of Terrorism due to its support for organizations such as Hizbollah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. In addition, other extremist groups are present in Syria. These groups have the potential to be either the targets of or perpetrators of acts of violence. On February 12, 2008, an explosion occurred in the residential Kafer Soseh neighborhood of Damascus, killing Imad Moughniyeh, a senior Hizbollah operative. In 2006, the U.S. Embassy in Damascus was attacked by terrorists armed with guns, grenades, and a car bomb. The Syrian Government has allowed anti-U.S. demonstrations to occur; the latest was on March 3, 2008. Anti-U.S. demonstrations date back to September 2005, some of which have turned violent and led to damage to Western embassies, including the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. citizens who remain in or travel to Syria are encouraged to register at the consular section of the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Syria. Americans in Syria should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. These measures include being aware of their surroundings, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all travel, and ensuring travel documents are current.

U.S. consular personnel remain available to provide emergency information and services to American citizens. The U.S. Embassy in Damascus, Syria, is located at 2, Al-Mansour St., Abu Roumaneh. The Embassy telephone number is (963) (11) 3391-4444, fax (963) (11) 331-9678, e-mail: acsdamascus@state.gov. American citizens may register with the Embassy online by visiting https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs. Additional information may be found on the Embassy website at http://usembassy.state.gov/damascus.

Updated information on travel and security in Syria may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States and Canada or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. Additional details can be found in the Department of State’s Country Specific Information for Syria, and the Worldwide Caution, which are available on the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
