Critical Threats: Blank When None
Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. Mission Police Shut Down Home Invasion Ring[Mexican Nationals in South Texas]
KGBT 4 ^ | April 10, 2008 | Victor Castillo
Posted on April 10, 2008 6:54:37 AM PDT by SwinneySwitch

Mission Police not only captured several individuals suspected of being involved in a home invasion early Sunday morning, but police also confiscated high-powered weapons possibly used in several home invasions throughout Hidalgo County.

A group of four Mexican nationals were formally charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.

Mission police said they are linked to a home invasion at an apartment located on the 700-block of North Dunlap Road.

“Approximatelly four to five individuals had gone in at gun point demanding jewelery, demanding money and other valuables belonging to the victim,” said Mission Police Lt. Martin Garza.

The men were arrested after a Crime Stoppers tip reported several individuals were selling jewelery in the area of 4-1/2 Mile Line and North La Homa Road.

They were placed under custody when the items they had in their possesion proved to be stolen.

“That jewelry was identified as the jewelry belonging to our victims on Sunday morning, as well those individuals were identified through photo lineups as the persons involved in this home invasion,” Garza stated.

The investigation lead police to execute two separate search warrants in the area of Donna where detectives found several stolen items belonging to the victims.

But Police also seized several semi-automatic weapons, ammunition, bullet proof vests, home made sky masks, along with security badges.

“Those items are high-powered weapons that are used in these type of organized criminal activity,” Lt. Garza said. “We believe these individuals might have been involved in other ones here in the County of Hidalgo.”

The suspects arrested in the case were identified as:

Ever De Leon Alejandro Vasquez Jose Martinez Leandro Bolaños Suspects De Leon, Vasquez and Bolaños are believed to be part of the Sunday home invasion.

They each recieved a $1 million bond during a Wednesday arraignment.

Investigators believe that Martinez sold the stolen jewelry. He recieved a $500,000 bond.

But police are also looking for two more individuals linked to the ring: 38-year-old Rodolfo De Leon and 22-year-old Hervey De Leon.

“These individuals are being charged with not only aggravated robbery but also engaging in organized criminal activity,” Garza said.

Pray for strength but don't tell anyone about my deed

Kafeel, who had a PhD in engineering, instructed him in the e-mail not to tell anyone and to maintain a cover story that he was in Iceland on a global warming project. The message said: “My sincere request that you do the following: 1. Pray to Allah for acceptance of my deeds. 2. Pray to Allah to give you calm and composure and strength (for you will need this) 3. Do not inform anyone about me or my deed (and I mean anyone). 4. If they figure out it was me (I have tried to clear up my tracks as much as possible) then go ahead and tell them whatever they ask of you.

Afghanistan Operations Targeting Extremists Net Five Suspects

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2008 – Five suspects were caught yesterday during two separate operations targeting extremist networks in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan and Khowst provinces.
In an operation in Tirin Kot district, Uruzgan province, coalition forces searched the compounds of a known Taliban bomb facilitator responsible for several attacks in the province. Forces detained three suspects there.

In a separate operation, Afghan National Police and coalition forces searched compounds in the Nadir Shah Kot district, Khowst province, targeting a terrorist network leader charged with funneling foreign fighters and weapons into the area. Forces nabbed the leader along with another suspect.

In other operations in Afghanistan, coalition forces recovered a cache of weapons and bomb-making materials last week. Coalition forces searched compounds in the Garmsir district of Helmand province, looking for a Taliban insurgent accused of bringing weapons and bombs into the area. Forces found several small-arms weapons, rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, large-caliber rounds and bomb-making materials. The cache was destroyed.

“Navy Ship Encounters Iranian Boat”
April 11, 2008 - 1:07pm

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON (AP) - The Navy says a ship encountered a small Iranian high-speed boat in the central Persian Gulf and warned it away by firing a flare.

Two other similar Iranian boats in the area did not come as close.

The USS Typhoon tried unsuccessfully to establish radio contact with the Iranian boat after it came within an estimated 200 yards of the Typhoon on Thursday, outside Iranian territorial waters. A Navy official says the ship then fired the flare and continued on its way without incident.

The official says there were no signs any boat was armed.”

Search continues for lost explosives in Liberty County (Texas)
April 11, 2008

Authorities in Liberty County are searching for nearly four dozen explosive devices that fell out of a pickup truck earlier this week. Anyone who discovers the brass, bell-shaped devices is urged to leave them alone and call authorities. "It is going to be like a small grenade and there will be an internal flash fire" if they explode, Ken DeFoor, Liberty County emergency management coordinator, said today.

Fifty of the explosives, which are detonated about 250 feet underground to take seismic readings in oil fields, were being moved from one Key Energy Services construction site to another on Wednesday afternoon, DeFoor said. They had been packed in a cardboard box, which usually is placed inside a 64-quart cooler for such trips, but was not on this occasion, he said.

The truck left a Key Energy site near County Road 337 in north Liberty County about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, DeFoor was told. The driver traveled on CR 337 to Plum Grove Road and had gone about 15 miles when he noticed the box was gone. "He looked back and the tailgate was down and the box missing," DeFoor said. The cooler, which was in the truck bed with the cardboard box, also is missing.

Four teams searched on Wednesday, DeFoor said, and six of the explosives were found near the first construction site. "There are still 44 unaccounted for," he said. Officials with Key Energy Services could not be reached for comment this morning. The devices have two electrical contacts. They measure 1 1/2 inches wide, 2 inches long and 5 inches around. Besides worrying about people handling the explosives, officials are concerned that someone may try to melt them down to sell the brass.

DeFoor said he was told that they probably would not explode if stepped on, but could explode in response to a greater impact, such as being thrown against a hard object. Anyone with information about the devices is asked to call the Liberty County Sheriff's Office at 936-336-4500 or the Liberty County Emergency Management Office at 936-334-3219.

Saint Xavier closes campuses; sends students home

Saint Xavier University tonight closed its campuses indefinitely and told students to leave campus by noon Saturday.

The students are being sent home after threatening graffiti was found a second time in a freshman dormitory.

The message found Thursday said: “Be prepared to die on 4/14.”

http://www.southtownstar.com/news/890979,0411xavierclosed.article

Saint Xavier has 2 campuses - one in Chicago, IL and one in Orland Park, IL. This has been all over the local news this evening. BOTH campuses closed “indefinitely.”

Students will receive 36 hour notice when the all clear is given to return. The interesting thing was watching the face of the school representative when she said that local law enforcement told them the threat was of a “tone” that they needed to clear the kids out pronto. It gave me the distinct impression that there was even more to the message. IMO, she looked quite frightened.

Oorang, appreciate the lost explosives post. 44 still unaccounted for is a LOT.

Staph superbug found in retail pork products

Canadian researchers have found antibiotic-resistant Staph bacteria in pork products purchased in retail stores across the country -- a discovery that raises questions about how the contamination occurred, how frequently it happens and whether it has implications for human health.

Just under 10 per cent of sampled pork chops and ground pork recently purchased in four provinces tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, lead researcher Dr. Scott Weese reported Wednesday in a presentation to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta.

Hand gels alone may not curb infections

In a Nebraska hospital, medical workers nearly doubled their use of the alcohol-based gel, but their generally cleaner hands had no bearing on the rate of infections among patients.

The doctor who studied the problem pointed to many villains: Rings and fingernails that are too long and hard to clean, poor handling of catheters and treatment areas that aren't sanitized.

Met police officers to be microchipped

According to respected industry magazine Police Review, the plan - which affects all 31,000 serving officers in the Met, including Sir Ian Blair - is set to replace the unreliable Airwave radio system currently used to help monitor officer's movements.

The new electronic tracking device - called the Automated Personal Location System (APLS) - means that officers will never be out of range of supervising officers.

That’s interesting about hand gels, MamaDearest.

I’ve never used those for hand washing because I’ve never heard of that, before.

I do use alcohol on all the keyboards and computer mouses, door knobs, phones, microwave, refrigerator stove handle and remote controls.

And, handwashing multiple times a days when handling meat/poultry products or gardeniNg...
