Critical Threats: Blank When None
Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. ARTICLE SNIPPET (from your post no. 455):

“Investigators said there was no evidence the couple planned a large-scale attack.

“This is not a terrorist cell or people with a big plan to blow something up,” Contos said. “It’s a couple of people making explosive devices for whatever reason that’s undetermined at this time.””

###
###

OPINION: If the couple was “making explosive devices” and the reason is “undetermined at this time;” then how can one come to the conclusion “This is not a terrorist cell...”?

Undetermined means exactly that — undetermined.

“Refugee sentenced in robbery and carjacking”
By Geoffrey Fattah
Deseret Morning News
Published: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 10:57 a.m. MDT

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A refugee from Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) has been sentenced to serve more than 12 years in federal prison for carjacking a vehicle last June and then robbing a fast-food restaurant days later, leading police on a high-speed chase.
During a hearing in U.S. District Court on Tuesday, Malco Kiyabo Kundo, 22, of West Valley City, was sentenced to 147 months in prison for carjacking, robbery and using a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

U.S. District Judge Kimball also recommended that Kundo be sent to a prison facility where he can receive a mental health evaluation.

Last January Kundo accepted a plea deal in which he admitted that on June 29, 2007 he and another male approached a car at the drive through window of a restaurant at 2901 East and 3300 South in Salt Lake City. Armed with a .45-caliber handgun and a shotgun, Kundo admitted he and the other male ordered the people out of the car and stole it.”

Islamo-Fascism Discussed on 100 Campuses
Wednesday, April 09, 2008

The Islamo Fascism Awareness Week II got under way yesterday at universities across the nation in what amounted to a two front offensive against the unholy alliance between radical and pro-jihad groups. By focusing on a Declaration Against Genocide, IFA Week speakers encouraged students to repudiate the genocidal threats against America and Israel issued by terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as their rogue-state sponsors in Iran. At the same time, they encouraged campus groups to condemn Islamic terror and to spotlight those groups -- particularly the Muslim Student Association, a group with chapters on more than 600 campuses nationwide – which have pointedly refused to do so.

Robert Spencer, one of the IFAW Week's key speakers, noted that the campaign provides a perspective seldom-heard in today's academic world: "Islamo Fascism Awareness Week gives college students an opportunity to hear an alternate view to the leftist propaganda that passes for academic discourse on all too many campuses these days. With the Middle East Studies Association appearing completely uninterested in allowing for viewpoints that go against the dominant mainstream, Islamo Fascism Awareness Week provides a small bit of equal time. What's more, this time around, with our call to denounce the genocidal statements of Ahmadinejad, Hassan Nasrallah, and others, we are providing a platform for moderate Muslims and others who have the courage to speak out against the barbarity and madness -- a platform they will most likely not otherwise find on their campuses."

One reason for the one-sidedness of the campus debate is the influence of groups like the Muslim Student Association and their effectiveness in silencing any debate over Islamic extremism. Founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Egyptian terrorist organization, the group retains troubling ties to militant Muslim groups. For instance, the MSA has sought donations from the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, the Islamic charity shut down by the U.S. government for providing financial backing to the terrorist group Hamas. (The Islamo Fascism Awareness campaign has produced a booklet, The Muslim Student Association and the Jihad Network, which documents this organization’s role in the radical Islamists’ “stealth jihad” which aims to sabotage American culture and institutions.)

US to Double Visas for Saudi Students
Arab News ^ | 10 April 08 | Abdul Aziz Abdul Wahed
Posted on April 9, 2008 6:36:35 PM PDT by LSUfan

US Ambassador Ford Fraker said in Sakaka that his country aims to double the number of student visas issued to Saudis.

“Currently there are 15,000 Saudi students in the US,” he said during an event on Sunday with local business leaders to an audience at the Al-Jouf Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We aim to increase their numbers to 30,000 over the next five years.”

Fraker said Saudi Arabia should bolster its English-language programs because it is generally required for Saudis seeking to pursue higher studies in the US.

Fraker also stressed the need for popularizing English teaching programs because it would overcome the language barriers for Saudi students seeking to study in the US easier.

In order to facilitate increased mutual visits, Fraker said he is working to simplify the issue of visas to Saudi businessmen.

“’We won’t be able to deter nuclear Iran’”
By JONATHAN BECK

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”Iran will be the first nuclear state in history against which deterrence won’t work, even if the deterrent is nuclear,” Likud chairman Binyamin Netanyahu said Wednesday at an international conference titled “Russia, the Middle East and the Challenge of Radical Islam.”

The conference was held at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem under the auspices of the center’s Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies and the Eurasian Institute of the Inter-Disciplinary Center, Herzliya.

“Nothing will stop the Iranians - not the use of force and not a fear of being hit in retaliation,” he said, adding that “every Israeli withdrawal from territories it controls leaves room for Iranian terror to enter.”

Netanyahu added that “if in the past, Hizbullah was a state within the state of Lebanon, it seems today that the government of Lebanon is a state within a Hizbullah stronghold.” “In the last 30 years, we have been living in a world where Sunni extremists succeed in attacking targets in the Western world, while on the other hand, Shi’ite Iran is rapidly advancing to the point of no return in its nuclear aspirations,” the Likud leader said.

Regarding the conflict with the Palestinians, Netanyahu said there was “no chance that moderate factors in the Palestinian Authority will succeed in halting terror or replacing Israeli forces in securing the territory. Israel should ensure its safety on its own and provide Palestinians with the financial growth they aspire to, in order to create real peace partners.”

Netanyahu finished his speech by stating that “unlike the common belief that peace will bring about financial improvement, history teaches us that the opposite is far truer.””

Pierson Wood suspects charged with murder and terrorism....

Larry Allen, 30, and Jarvon Brown, 29, were arrested March 27 as part of a more than yearlong probe by the Safe Streets Task Force into the gang's activity.

Allen was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, terrorism causing death, delivery of cocaine less than 50 grams and racketeering.

Health officials on alert for measles outbreak

The Seattle-King County Health Department says some people at Sea- Tac Airport may have been infected with measles from another traveler on March 26.

A woman in her 20s flew from Amsterdam to Sea-Tac (on Northwest Flight 33) and then continued to Portland (on Horizon flight 2243). After developing a rash, she returned to the Netherlands on March 29 where a blood test on April 4 confirmed measles.

Health officials say other travelers who may have been on the flights and in the airport on the 26th should be alert for symptoms and see a doctor if they become ill.

Measles is spread through respiration and is highly contagious—90% of people without immunity sharing a house with an infected person will catch it. Airborne precautions should be taken for all suspected cases of measles.

Russia to fight terrorists ideologically

It is well-known that foreign intelligence often uses Nongovernmental organizations (NGO) both to obtain useful information and to force concealed influence on political processes. It was a headache for the authorities to realize that terrorists use exactly the same methods.

Radioactive substance stolen in Japan

A radioactive substance that can be used to make a dirty bomb has been stolen in Japan, police and officials said Tuesday, warning the public not to go near it. ADVERTISEMENT A sealed metal container holding a small amount of iridium 192 was stolen on Monday from the office near Tokyo of a company that inspects industrial products, police said.

Iridium 192 is commonly used in cancer radiation treatment but it is also cited in scenarios by anti-terrorism investigators as an ingredient for a makeshift nuclear bomb.

Yep, iridium 192.

I was hoping the suspect may have been located by now, but apparently not yet.

from your article link - snippet:

“A security camera at the warehouse caught a person wearing a baseball cap and work tunic carrying away the 22-kilogramme (48.4-pound) container, the company and police said.

“We are examining the tape and looking for the person,” a police spokesman said.”
