Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. FBI Statement Regarding Midwest River Deaths

“Over the past several years, law enforcement and the FBI have received information about young, college-aged men who were found deceased in rivers in the Midwest. The FBI has reviewed the information about the victims provided by two retired police detectives and interviewed an individual who provided information to the detectives. To date, we have not developed any evidence to support links between these tragic deaths or any evidence substantiating the theory that these deaths are the work of a serial killer or killers. The vast majority of these instances appear to be alcohol-related drownings. MND-B soldiers kill 8 criminals

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldiers killed eight criminals during night operations in northeastern Baghdad.

Soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, operating an unmanned aerial vehicle, witnessed two armed criminals, including one bearing a rifle on the rooftop of a house at approximately 7:15 p.m. April 30. Soldiers fired one Hellfire missile from the UAV. Both criminals were killed, and the weapon was destroyed.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., soldiers from 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd BCT, 4th Inf. Div., positively identified a Special Groups criminal with an RPK machine gun. Acting in self-defense, the soldiers returned fire and killed the individual.

Criminal forces continued to attack the soldiers with small-arms fire. At approximately 8:10 p.m., the soldiers killed another criminal firing upon them and then a third criminal at approximately 8:25 p.m.

At approximately 2 a.m. May 1, an air weapons team used a Hellfire missile to engage and kill three criminals in a vehicle. The criminals were seen earlier in the evening emplacing an improvised explosive device before fleeing in the vehicle.

“Special Groups are using Sadr City as a haven for their attacks against Iraqi civilians, the Iraqi Security Forces and U.S. soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for MND-B and the 4th Inf. Div. “We take every precaution to ensure we positively identify the enemy before engaging.”
