:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. Former Iranian President On Mughniya: His Faith In God And Love For Human Freedom And Glory Made Him Famous

Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami wrote in the memorial book for assassinated senior Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniya: “The fire of malicious rage, which sees its existence in the demise of others, this time entangled a dear person whose faith in God and whose love for human freedom and glory had made him famous in the history of mankind and Islam.”

Khatami added that Mughniya “was martyred to flow blood in the veins of the ‘storm-struck Middle East,’ especially Lebanon and Palestine, through a death deserved only by a great man like him.”

Coalition Forces Kill Six Terrorists, Detain Six Suspects

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22, 2008 – Coalition forces killed six terrorists and detained six suspected terrorists yesterday and today during operations to disrupt al Qaeda operating in central and northern Iraq, military officials reported.

During an operation east of Khan Bani Sad today, coalition forces targeted an alleged al Qaeda in Iraq associate involved in the suicide-bombing and improvised-explosive-device network that runs from Baqouba to Baghdad and north to Mosul. Reports indicate the suspect is associated with Abu Karrar, the al Qaeda leader also involved in the suicide-bombing network, who was killed during a coalition forces operation Feb. 17.

As the ground force arrived in the area, the troops were engaged by enemy fire from what appeared to be an underground bunker. A fixed-wing aircraft was called to engage the threat, killing three terrorists. A supporting helicopter engaged two more enemy personnel outside the building, killing both. As the ground force continued to clear the area, troops called for occupants of one of the target buildings to come out. One individual refused to comply and moved toward two weapons in the building. Coalition forces engaged and killed the terrorist. The ground force also detained two suspected terrorists and destroyed a vehicle that contained a weapons cache.

Also today, coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist during an operation in Baghdad while targeting associates of an al Qaeda in Iraq network involved in facilitating materials, vehicles and suicide bombers to terrorist groups throughout Baghdad.

During an operation in Mosul yesterday, coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists while targeting an alleged associate of a senior-level foreign-terrorist facilitator responsible for attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces in the region.

“Iraqi and coalition forces continue to disrupt al Qaeda in Iraq’s networks across the country,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “The indiscriminate violence wreaked by al Qaeda’s suicide bombers and explosive attacks only strengthens our resolve to find the terrorists and bring them to justice.”

Eight Iraqi civilians and one Iraqi army soldier were wounded yesterday in Arab Jabour during an attack by al Qaeda in Iraq operatives. All nine of the wounded, including four women and three children, were evacuated to a nearby joint combat outpost and then by helicopter to Logistics Support Area Anaconda near Balad for treatment.

Initial reports indicate the al Qaeda operatives seized a home in the village, took the residents hostage and destroyed the home with an explosive device. Al Qaeda then engaged local citizens and Iraqi army soldiers with small-arms fire as they attempted to help the residents of the home.

The Iraqi army had recently cleared al Qaeda in Iraq from Arab Jabour and established a “Sons of Iraq” citizen security group there to maintain security, said Army Maj. Mike Garcia, a spokesman for the 2nd Infantry Division’s 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. “Al Qaeda’s hold on the population continues to grow weaker every day,” he said. “And this is the latest example of their desperate and brutal efforts to seek retribution against Iraqis who attempt to keep (al Qaeda in Iraq) out of their towns and villages.”

In other Iraq news, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained the commander of an Iranian-trained and -funded “special group” during an operation in Baghdad’s Shaab neighborhood Feb. 20. The detainee is suspected of involvement in multiple murders and other criminal activities.

Paratroopers with 82nd Airborne Division’s 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, detained the suspect after a tip on his whereabouts. The suspect is a known special groups leader and financier believed to receive funding from Iran that was earmarked to support the Diyala criminal network, said Army Maj. Cameron Weathers, the 2nd BCT intelligence officer. The money typically is used to pay and equip special groups criminals, procure vehicles and support criminal activities against innocent Iraqis.

In Iraq operations Feb. 19:

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers captured a suspected special groups criminal cell leader in the Rashid district of the Iraqi capital. Soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, attached to Task Force Dragon, noticed a man fitting the description of a suspected cell leader during a routine patrol of Abu Tshir and detained him without incident. Officials believe the alleged cell leader had taken over day-to-day direction of the criminal cell after its previous leader was arrested by coalition forces in the same area.

— Iraqi army and Multinational Division Center soldiers discovered a significant weapons cache north of Lutifiyah. Members of 1st Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and 4th Platoon, Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, found a mass of weapons and homemade explosives after a local citizen provided the tip and led the soldiers to the site. The cache contained various improvised explosive device-making materials, multiple explosive rounds, firearms and documentation.

— Acting on information provided by a Sons of Iraq group, soldiers assigned to Troop C, 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, confiscated a weapons cache in a small village southeast of Baghdad on Feb. 19. The cache contained 21 122 mm Russian projectiles and three 130 mm Russian projectiles. The munitions were buried about 3 feet deep in a suspect’s backyard. The suspect was detained and taken to Combat Outpost Cashe for questioning.

Report: Elmo Doll Threatens to Kill Toddler

Friday, February 22, 2008

Elmo has a dark side, one Florida family says.

It sounds like something the talking doll Chucky from the movies might say: “Kill James!” Instead, a Florida family says the threat to their toddler is coming from a talking Elmo doll.

The Bowman family, of Lithia, Fla., said an Elmo doll belonging to their 2-year-old son, James, began to spout death threats towards him after they changed its batteries, TBO.com reports.

The Elmo Knows Your Name Doll started saying “Kill James!” in a sing-song voice, the site reports.

“It’s not something that really you would think would ever come out of a toy,” James’ mother, Melissa, told the site. “But once I heard, I was just kind of distraught.”

The toy’s manufacturer, Fisher-Price, said it will issue the Bowmans a voucher for a replacement doll, TBO.com reports.

Military Questions Obama’s Claim That Under-Equipped Troops Used Taliban Weapons
by FOXNews.com

Friday, February 22, 2008

The military is casting doubt on Barack Obama’s claim during a debate Thursday night that for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, it was “easier to get Taliban weapons” than it was to be properly equipped by their own country.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Friday he found the claim “hard to believe.”

“Despite the degree of skill and finesse that it takes to manage a large force with the number of deployments we have going on — and despite the stress that we have readily acknowledged on the force, one of the things we do is make sure that all of our servicemen that are going into harm’s way are properly trained and equipped with the leadership they need to be successful,” he said.

Obama’s campaign stands by his remarks, which he made during a debate with Hillary Clinton in Austin, Texas, while explaining why he feels he is prepared to be commander-in-chief and why the decision to enter Iraq demonstrated poor judgment.

Arrests in Morocco spark Belgian interest
Saturday, 23 February, 2008

BRUSSELS: Belgian investigators will travel to Morocco soon to examine whether some of a group of Islamists arrested there this week were involved in six unsolved murders in Belgium in the late 1980s.

Four of 32 people detained in what Moroccan security forces said was the break-up of a terrorist network live or have lived in Belgium and may have had a hand in the murders, Belgian prosecutors said. Belgian authorities received information from Morocco containing summaries of confessions, prosecution spokeswoman Lieve Pellens said.

It is only a summary, but we are very interested, Pellens said, adding Belgian investigators hoped eventually to speak with the detainees. Belgian media reported the suspects are wanted in connection with two murders in particular of a moderate Imam and of a Jewish doctor, both in Brussels in 1989. Pellens declined to give details, but said the murders took place between 1985 and 1989.

Moroccan terror ring raised funds ‘with European thefts’
Friday, February 22nd, 2008

PARIS - Morocco’s government said it has dismantled a terrorist network that raised funds through holdups in Europe and plotted to assassinate Cabinet ministers and members of the North African kingdom’s Jewish community.

Morocco has also banned an Islamist political party, Al Badil Al Hadari, because some members were linked to the network, Morocco’s official MAP news agency reported Wednesday night, citing the interior minister.

Moroccan newspapers said police arrested a total of 32 people in sweeps this week. Authorities discovered stashes of weapons while dismantling the network, which they believe has links to Al Qaeda and local terror groups, MAP said. The group’s suspected leader, Abdel Qader Belliraj, is accused in six assassinations in Belgium from 1986 to 1989, MAP said, quoting Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa. It was not clear from the report which assassinations he was referring to.

SBS swoop to kill Taliban chief (Brits in Afghanistan)
The Sun (UK) ^ | Tom Newton Dunn
Posted on 02/22/2008 2:30:49 PM PST by uksupport1

A TALIBAN chief behind suicide attacks on British troops has been shot dead in a daring operation by elite forces in Afghanistan.

The Special Boat Service ambushed Mullah Abdul Matin as he crossed a desert on a motorbike.

They were dropped into his path by helicopter after a tip-off on his whereabouts. Matin spotted them and opened fire with an AK47 rifle but he was cut down in a hail of bullets.

Two henchmen with him – one his key lieutenant Mullah Karim Agha – were also killed in the firefight.

Matin, who was in his 40s, was killed on Monday near Gereshk in war-torn Helmand province.

Troops recovered night vision goggles, grenades and a detonator.

Matin, a deputy of Taliban chief Mullah Omar, had been one of the Coalition’s top targets for several months.

He had planned several suicide bomb attacks on British convoys, killing two British servicemen and wounding a dozen in the last 18 months.

His fanatics are thought to have murdered Royal Marine Gary Wright, 22, from 45 Commando in October 2006, and Sgt Dave Wilkinson, 33, from 19 Regiment Royal Artillery, last July.

He is also thought to be behind the murders of dozens of Afghan civilians.

British Forces spokesman in Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Millar, said: “Mullah Matin’s been a priority target for some time. He commanded fighters and reported directly to the highest Taliban levels of command.

“He’s responsible for the kidnapping of local nationals, had links with the narcotics trade and had provided security to the traffickers.”

NATO spokesman Brigadier General Carlos Branco said the Taliban had suffered “another severe setback”.

“NIU grad recalls shooter as inquisitive, smart, nice”
February 20, 2008
BY RASMIEYH ABDELNABI

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “I met Steve Kazmierczak in an introductory political science class in 2002 as a freshman in college. He was inquisitive, smart, respectful and nice.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “We would also see each other on campus during the semesters we didn’t have any classes together and catch up.

Our topics of choice: foreign policy and the Middle East. He would especially enjoy practicing his Arabic on me. In 2004, NIU decided to offer a year’s worth of Arabic classes. Steve took both classes without hesitation, excited as could be.

“Assalamo Alikum,” he would say to me, which means “peace be with you” in Arabic. He would proceed to ask me how I was doing and what I was up to, all in Arabic with a thick accent and a huge, excited smile.

Sometimes I was his walking dictionary and he would ask me, “What does this word mean in English?” or “What is this word in Arabic?”

We would debate on issues, sometimes argue, but he would always back his arguments with facts. It was about logic and things adding up to him.

Once we took a course called “The Politics of the Middle East.” At the beginning of the course, our instructor informed us a research paper would be due by the end of the semester. Steve decided on Hamas, which is known mainly to the world as being a Palestinian terrorist group, which was the first thing that interested Steve about the group. But he also heard Hamas funded many social services, which also interested him. How could one group be put into two completely different categories, Steve would ask.

Unlike most of us, Steve started his research from day one, reading every book he could find on Hamas. He’d give me a status report when we saw each other in class. Steve said that his perception of Hamas changed with all the research he did.”

Threat of Terrorist Attacks In Gulf States In Protest Against Mughniya Assassination

Bahrain sources reported that three Gulf state embassies in Bahrain, including the Kuwaiti Embassy, had received anonymous phone threats of attacks in these countries in the next few days.

The attacks are supposed to be in protest against the assassination of senior Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniya and the Gulf states’ refusal to recognize him as a martyr.

The caller, who was a woman, also warned that the Gulf state leaders’ participation in the Arab summit in Damascus would lead to terror attacks.
