:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. Of course, dating it to 1999, in part buys into the lies that got us here in the first place.

The Orthodox Christian Serbs of Kosovo have been being attacked by Albanians long before that. The Albanians in Kosovo joined with the Nazis and Ustashe in the persecution of Serbs, and even before that: a poster on another thread recalled that the Ottoman Sultan had to issue a ban on Albanian attacks on Christians, as it was hurting the tax-base for the jizya.

And in the interim: look at NYTimes archives from the 1980’s. Lots of stories about Albanian harrassment of Serbs.

All that happened in the 1990’s was the Serbs tried to fight back, only to have the West intervene on behalf of the terrorists and criminals.

Terror accused told to kill 1,000 in Australia - ‘FOOTBALL JIHAD’

Terror accused told to kill 1,000, Australian court told

Feb. 13, 2008

MELBOURNE (AFP) — A Muslim “terrorist organisation” was urged by their leader to target football matches or a train station in Australia in a bid to kill 1,000 people, a court heard Wednesday.

A group of 12 men pleaded not guilty to a string of terrorism-related charges amid tight security in the Victorian Supreme Court.

Their alleged leader, cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 47, had suggested during taped telephone calls that a bombing where the maximum loss of life could be inflicted, such as at a football ground, could be suitable, the court heard.

Benbrika taught the group that it was “permissible to kill women, children and the aged” in the cause of violent jihad or holy war, said prosecutor Richard Maidment.

Maidment said the case was about “a home-grown terrorist organisation” and that Benbrika had urged the group to do “something big” to pressure the Australian government to take its troops out of Iraq.

“If you kill here a thousand, the government is going to think, because if you get large numbers here, the government will listen,” Maidment said Benbrika told fellow-accused Abdullah Merhi in a conversation intercepted by police.

In another conversation with an undercover police officer who infiltrated the group, Benbrika asked if he could be shown how to make explosives using ammonium nitrate, the prosecutor said.

He had asked how much was required to destroy a house and then wanted to know “how much to destroy a larger building.”

The prosecutor also said that material, including literature on how to make bombs, and video tapes with messages from Osama Bin Laden, was seized from the group by police.

The jury would later hear that in another secretly recorded conversation, another of the accused, Ezzit Raad, remarks about the 2005 London bombings: “Terrible, should have been more.”

“The crown case is encapsulated in the words of the accused themselves,” Maidment said.

“When you listen (to the tapes) it will become clear to you that each of the accused was committed to violent jihad.”

The men were arrested in a series of swoops in Sydney and Melbourne in November 2005, days after the government passed tough new anti-terrorism legislation, and remain in custody.

A group of nine men arrested at that time appeared in court in Sydney in May last year and pleaded not guilty to conspiring to launch a terrorist attack in Australia. Their trial is yet to begin.

WARDEN MESSAGE: BELGRADE DEMONSTRATIONS LIKELY
U.S. Embassy Belgrade released the following Warden Message on February 21:

This Warden Message is being issued to inform U.S. citizens of safety and security concerns related to scheduled demonstrations in Serbia related to Kosovo’s recent declaration of independence.

Following Kosovo’s February 17, 2008 declaration of independence, street protesters in different locations clashed with Serbian police and caused physical damage to a number of diplomatic missions, including the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, and to various businesses. The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade expects that future gatherings and events protesting Kosovo’s declaration of independence, both official and unofficial, could pose security risks for onlookers and participants, including the potential for unrest and violence. Businesses and organizations with U.S. affiliations may serve as focal points for these demonstrations.

A large organized demonstration is scheduled for Thursday, February 21, beginning at 5:00 pm in front of the Serbian Parliament in downtown Belgrade. The demonstrators are scheduled to march from the Parliament to the Saint Sava orthodox temple for a 7:00 pm service. Demonstrators are expected to arrive in large numbers in Belgrade by all modes of transportation throughout the day. Severe traffic congestion is expected and spontaneous demonstrations throughout Belgrade both before and after the scheduled 5:00 pm protest march may occur.

We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any protests. Since the timing and routes of marches and demonstrations are always subject to change, American citizens should monitor local media sources for new developments.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade is located at 50 Kneza Milosa Street. The Embassy website is http://belgrade.usembassy.state.gov. The Embassy telephone number is 381-11-3619-344. The Consular Section telephone is 381-11-3619-344 ext. 4655, 4665 and 4860, and the fax number is 381-11-3615-989. For after-hours emergencies, the number is 381-11-306-4679.

1 suspect killed after L.A. officers are fired upon by AK47 (SR2/San Fernando Rd)
LA Times ^ | 2/21/08 | By Richard Winton and Andrew Blankstein, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
Posted on 02/21/2008 2:51:34 PM PST by BurbankKarl

Los Angeles police shot and killed one man and wounded another after a wild incident in northeast Los Angeles that began when one of the suspects jumped out of a car stopped for a traffic violation and began firing on officers with an AK47 rifle, authorities said.

Two suspects remain at large. One is believed to be barricaded inside an apartment building in a neighborhood now surrounded by police. A fourth suspect apparently fled the area in a vehicle, officials said.

The incident began shortly after noon when officers attempted to make a traffic stop near Drew Street and Estara Avenue, police said.

“One of the suspects opened fire on the officers with an AK47,” said Cmdr. Andrew Smith, supervisor of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Bureau that includes the area where the incident occurred.

Officers returned fire, killing one man and wounding another in a neighborhood densely packed with apartments, small homes and businesses. No officers were injured in the attack, police said.

Within minutes, a massive police presence had descended on the area and Los Angeles SWAT officers were in position by 1 p.m., authorities said. The location is only a few blocks from the LAPD’s Northeast Station on San Fernando Road

Coalition Forces Kill Terrorist, Detain 20 Suspects

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2008 – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 20 suspected terrorists yesterday and today during operations to disrupt al Qaeda operations in central and northern Iraq, military officials reported.

West of Taji this morning, coalition forces conducted an operation targeting an individual believed to be an associate of the Baghdad improvised-explosive-device and car-bombing networks. Intelligence indicates he is a terrorist facilitator of materials, vehicles and suicide bombers for multiple terrorist cells throughout the city, officials said. During the operation, coalition forces engaged and killed one armed terrorist and detained two suspects.

During an operation in Sharqat, coalition forces captured an alleged associate of the senior leader for the al Qaeda in Iraq network in Mosul. Reports indicate the suspect also is connected with several other senior leaders in northern Iraq. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained five suspected terrorists.

In two operations in southeastern Mosul today, coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists while targeting the alleged senior leader for the network in Beiji and a suspected IED cell leader for a network operating in the city.

During an operation in Beiji, coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists this morning while targeting the suspected leader of an insurgent network that operates outside of the city.

North of Tal Afar yesterday, troops detained three suspects while targeting an alleged associate of al Qaeda in Iraq senior leadership.

“Iraqi and coalition force operations are systematically dismantling the al Qaeda networks in northern Iraq,” Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman, said. “As terrorists try to shift their operations to other locations, we will continue to find and attack their networks. Al Qaeda will find no safe haven in Iraq.”

Also yesterday, Iraqi soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 11th Iraqi Army Division, and soldiers from Company B, 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 11th Division Military Transition Team, seized munitions in the Rusafa security district of eastern Baghdad. As part of a clearance operation, the patrol reported finding two large containers with an undetermined amount of C4 explosives, artillery shells, fertilizer and mines. An explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the munitions.

In Iraq operations Feb. 19:

— Soldiers with Multinational Division Baghdad captured a suspected key member of an IED ring. Soldiers with the 25th Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, detained the suspect near the Nassir factory, northwest of Baghdad. The suspect allegedly is an al Qaeda member and IED facilitator suspected of multiple IED attacks against coalition and Iraqi security forces. The suspect is being held for further questioning.

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained five suspected extremists in northeastern Baghdad’s Shaab neighborhood. Paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne Division’s 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, were conducting a cordon-and-knock operation with the Iraqi National Police when they discovered a suspected criminal. The individual is suspected of conducting IED attacks against coalition and Iraqi security forces as well as intimidating local members of the “Sons of Iraq” citizen-manned security force. While conducting a search of the suspect’s house and an adjacent property, the paratroopers discovered a 60 mm mortar round. The individual and four other men were detained for questioning. During a follow-on mission shortly before midnight, paratroopers received an additional report on the whereabouts of another individual suspected of running a weapons-smuggling operation for a criminal militia network. Paratroopers detained the suspect and another man who tested positive for having handled explosives.

— Iraqi National Police and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers seized unfired rockets and a piece of unexploded ordnance following a rocket attack at a combat outpost in eastern Baghdad. Officials from the 10th Mountain Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team reported a suspicious vehicle in the area. Reacting quickly, Iraqi National Police created a cordon and worked with soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, to search the vehicle. The soldiers found nine rockets in the truck. The soldiers also found an unexploded piece of ordnance and called explosive ordnance disposal personnel to the scene.

— Numerous tips led Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers to seize a cache of armor-piercing explosively formed penetrators in western Rashid. The tips led “Black Lions” of the 1st Infantry Division’s Company D, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, to a weapons cache in Bayaa. The Black Lions found a car containing four assembled EFPs, 10 8-inch copper plates for use in EFPs, a complete 120 mm mortar system, a sniper rifle, a rocket-propelled grenade, 10 RPG boosters, nine hand grenades, 19 blocks of C-4 explosive, 1,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, an AK-47 assault rifle, three passports, a bag of homemade explosives, and various IED components. Explosive ordnance disposal personnel safely eliminated the cache.

In operations Feb. 18:

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers captured a man suspected of being an al Qaeda weapons trafficker during an operation in eastern Rashid. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division’s Company B, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, attached to Task Force Dragon, knocked on a suspected criminal’s door in Doura and arrested two alleged weapons traffickers, including one alleged to be al Qaeda in Iraq’s “Prince of Princes.” The suspected arms trafficker is believed to have received the moniker for his ability to transport weapons to certain groups.

— Iraqi army and Multinational Division Center soldiers discovered four weapon caches in Yusufiyah. Troops from 4th Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and the 101st Airborne Division’s Company C, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, acted on a tip from a local citizen questioned by the Iraqi army. The man admitted to being a member of al Qaeda in Iraq and told Iraqi soldiers the location of the caches, which were located within a square quarter-mile area. The caches yielded about 750 mortar rounds, a complete 60 mm mortar system, seven ski masks, hundreds of mortar parts, 100 pounds of unknown bulk explosives, and instruction manuals. After collecting the munitions, the soldiers talked with people who live nearby, and one citizen told them about a “spider hole” on his farm. The soldiers originally thought it was a small hole, barely large enough to hide two adults. Once they started digging, however, they found a room that was 10 feet by 12 feet, complete with an aluminum ceiling.

— Iraqi army soldiers found a weapons cache and detained one suspect during an operation near Karbala. The quick-reaction force platoon from 4th Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army Division, conducted the operation based on information from an Iraqi soldier. The cache contained 18 grenades, five RPG rounds, an AK-47 rifle, four bags of TNT, a homemade grenade, a large metal container with fuses installed, and a bottle of poison.

Muslim school 'that taught pupils from race hate textbooks made photocopies after order to shred them' (U.K.)
20th February 2008

A prestigious Islamic school in London was forced to shred 2,000 textbooks used to poison pupils' minds with lessons of hate, a former teacher claimed yesterday.

Colin Cook, who taught English at the King Fahad Academy for 18 years, told a tribunal how "incompetent" Ofsted inspectors reported that the school's teaching of Islamic studies was "mostly good". But their report was wildly inaccurate, he said, because pupils as young as five were being taught by rote from Arabic textbooks describing Jews as "monkeys" and Christians as "pigs".

Mr Cook said that when he exposed the racist teaching, the school's head Dr Sumaya Alyusuf lied on television, insisting that hateful passages had never been taught. Under public pressure the Academy eventually agreed to destroy 2,000 books but photocopied them first for future use, he told the tribunal.

Saudi Warnings Mark Lebanon Jitters
2/20/08

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Saudi Arabia is warning its citizens against traveling to Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy is urging Americans to be vigilant and French cultural centers in two major Lebanese cities have temporarily closed.

Lebanon's intractable political crisis is no longer business as usual — not after the slaying last week of a top fugitive Hezbollah commander, Imad Mughniyeh.

The killing prompted the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, to declare "open war" against Israel, which Hezbollah and Iran accused in the assassination. Israel, which denied any role, went on high alert. A Hezbollah retaliation would most certainly draw Israel's wrath and risk igniting another war.

Spain on top terror alert ahead of election: ministry
Friday, February 22, 2008

MADRID: The Spanish government on Thursday put the country on a state of maximum terror alert ahead of legislative elections scheduled for March 9, the interior ministry said.

The official campaign starts Friday and the ministry said the alert would provide for a “total mobilisation of forces and state security corps to monitor and protect” party headquarters, election meetings, public transport, shopping centres and sporting events.

Islamist militants planted bombs on Madrid commuter trains on March 11, 2004, three days before the last national election, killing 191 people and wounding 1,800. Spain, which has three security levels, had previously been on level two “medium” alert amid concerns over a possible attack by the armed separatist group ETA which called off a 15-month ceasefire in June 2006. “We believe ETA will try to kill before the elections,” Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said Wednesday night during an interview with public television TVE.
