:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Is the U.S. Failing in Afghanistan?

It was malice in wonderland at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday as Bush Administration envoys insisted things are getting better in Afghanistan, while angry lawmakers from both parties cited facts and figures showing just the opposite. Even the senior Republican on the panel, Senator Richard Lugar, found the Administration's claims wanting. "I'm not sure that we have a plan for Afghanistan," he said.

Long seen as the "forgotten war" eclipsed by Iraq in U.S. priorities, Afghanistan is in the Washington spotlight this week with the release of three independent reports concluding that without a change in U.S. policy there, the erstwhile sanctuary of Osama bin Laden would remain a failed state. IRGC Weekly: Merkel Harming Germany’s Strategic Interests

In an article, the Iranian weekly Sobh-e Sadeq, the mouthpiece of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei circulated among the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), wrote that the changes in Germany’s foreign policy being instituted by Chancellor Angela Merkel have harmed Germany’s strategic interests.

Among the changes cited by the paper are support for the continuation of a troop presence in Afghanistan; hostility towards Iran over its nuclear issue, including pressure on German companies not to invest in Iran; and support for “the Israeli aggression” in the 2006 Lebanon war” and “the Israeli slaughter being carried out in Gaza.”

The paper recommended to Merkel that she rethink her relations with the U.S. and Israel.

We killed too many say Bali bombers

Samudra’s fastidiousness about mass murder, which some scholars attribute to an element of Islamic theology, did not extend to any remorse. Two months before the bombing, he said, he had studied tourist literature to narrow down the list of targets.

Once on the scene, he said, “I observed Zionists. I knew they were using it [the bar] and then also I know I could spread this, with Australia, with Aussies.” No Israelis were killed in the attack.

His targets, he said, were “antiMuslims, especially people from the USA, Australia, members of Nato, elements of what people call the alliance because they know it’s a crusader army”.

What would he say to the families of his victims?

“To Muslim people I would say pardon - but Muslims only. While the unbelievers - they must be entering into hell. Allah says to all unbelievers that this road will bring you to hell,” he said.
