“Loss of wind causes Texas power grid emergency”
Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:11pm EST
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “HOUSTON (Reuters) - A drop in wind generation late on Tuesday, coupled with colder weather, triggered an electric emergency that caused the Texas grid operator to cut service to some large customers, the grid agency said on Wednesday.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “No other customers lost power during the emergency, ERCOT said. Interruptible customers were restored in about 90 minutes and the emergency was over in three hours.
ERCOT said the grid’s frequency dropped suddenly when wind production fell from more than 1,700 megawatts, before the event, to 300 MW when the emergency was declared.”

Eight Wounded in Los Angeles Street Shooting
Breitbart ^ | 2/27/08 | THOMAS WATKINS
Posted on 02/27/2008 7:26:46 PM PST by kiriath_jearim
A gunman fired into a crowd of children and adults at a South Los Angeles bus stop Wednesday, wounding eight, authorities said. Three girls, ages 10 to 12, and a woman were in critical condition.
The gunman ran away, and streets in the area were shut down as numerous police officers rushed in.
Ezequiel Cornejo, 23, a tire mechanic, said he heard about 10 gunshots, probably from a handgun, just after neighborhood schools let out.
“After that I saw a little girl running, she was running back to the school, she was holding her arm,” he said.
The shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. at Central and Vernon avenues. Two of the victims ran away and were found wounded outside a nearby middle school, police Officer Sara Faden said.
The critically wounded were a 10-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and a 49-year-old woman, said Fire Department spokeswoman d’Lisa Davies.
A 12-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and two men, ages 48 and 68, had minor injuries.
It was the second major outburst of street violence in the city in a week’s span.
Gang-related shootings carried out in broad daylight in the city’s northeast area on Feb. 21 led to a gunbattle in which police killed one gunman, wounded another and swarmed a neighborhood with heavily armed officers who captured a third suspect. Police said the gunbattle involved members of a notorious gang entrenched in that area for decades.

Radicals never say sorry
By Jonah Goldberg
“Everything was absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon.”
This excerpt from William Ayers’ memoir appeared in the New York Times on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 — a few hours before Al Qaeda terrorists crashed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Ayers, once a leader in the Weather Underground — the group that declared “war” on the U.S. government in 1970 — told the Times, “I don’t regret setting bombs” and “I feel we didn’t do enough.”
Ayers recently reappeared in the news because Politico.com reported Friday that Barack Obama has loose ties to him. Ayers, now a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is apparently a left-wing institution in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, and Obama visited Ayers’ home as a rite of passage when launching his political career in the mid-1990s. The two also served on the board of the charitable Woods Fund of Chicago, which gave money to Northwestern University Law School’s Children and Family Justice Center, where Ayers’ wife (and former Weather Underground compatriot) Bernardine Dohrn is the director.

BEIRUT, Lebanon The last time the world heard from Imad Mughniyeh, he was masterminding terror spectaculars in the 1980s and 1990s bomb attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets, kidnappings and hijackings. But for nearly 15 years, no one has known exactly what the Hezbollah commander was doing. The only confirmation of his whereabouts came when he was killed Feb. 12 in a car bombing in Syria.
Now Hezbollah officials and associates are describing a previously unknown role for Mughniyeh: Far from being too busy fleeing enemies, he was a key commander for Hezbollah in its 2006 war with Israel. He was among the leading military and security strategists if not the very top himself of the group and a member of its decision-making committee, according to those who had knowledge of Mughniyeh before he was killed Feb. 12 in Damascus.
"Hezbollah's top architect of that war was Imad Mughniyeh," Anis Naccache, a 57-year-old longtime associate, told The Associated Press. "You can say he was like a staff general (chief of staff)." In a speech Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah credited Mughniyeh with leading the group to two victories the 2006 war and a Hezbollah guerrilla war in 2000 that led to the withdrawal of Israeli troops from its last positions in southern Lebanon.

Singapore terror suspect escapes
Wednesday, Feb 27 2008
Singaporean security forces searched Thursday for an escaped terror suspect who allegedly plotted to crash a plane into Singapore's airport, authorities said.
Mas Selamat Kastari, said to be commander of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror group's Singapore arm, escaped Wednesday from a detention center. He was allegedly involved in plans about seven years ago to attack Singapore targets including the U.S. Embassy, the American Club and government buildings.
"Mas Selamat was the leader of the Singapore (Jemaah Islamiyah) network. He walks with a limp and is presently at large," the Home Affairs Ministry said in a statement. "Extensive police resources have been deployed to track him down." It did not say how he escaped.

Grenade explodes prematurely in southern Philippine town, killing would-be bomber
February 28, 2008
MANILA, Philippines: A grenade exploded during a town fiesta in the southern Philippines, killing a would-be bomber and wounding four people, police said Thursday.
The police chief in General Santos city, Senior Superintendent Robert Po, said the grenade held by the bomber went off before he managed to penetrate crowds celebrating the city's foundation anniversary late Wednesday. The blast caused panic among hundreds of people, and Radio DZBB reported that police were questioning some of the injured.
Po said investigators were working to determine the bomber's identity and affiliation, but suspected he may have been linked to a notorious extortion gang, the Al-Khobar group. The group, which authorities believe has ties to Muslim extremists operating in the southern Philippines, has been blamed for at least a dozen explosions in the region targeting bus companies and business establishments.

Dremali fled to the US [and] In 1998 Dremali co-founded the Islamic Center of Boca Raton, together with FAU professors Bassem Al Halabi and Khalid Hamza, and become its imam. It didn't take Dremali long to become a political activist in the United States. He participated in a series of pro-Palestinian demonstrations that were held across from the Israeli Embassy in Miami in 2000. At these events vitriolic speeches were made while Israeli flags were burned. In October at one of these events - as demonstrators shouted "Haya al Jihad" [Long live Jihad] and "With jihad we'll claim our land, Zionist blood will wet the sand" - Dremali shouted to the crowd, "...[don't] be sad for those who were martyred and to not be afraid to die for what they believe in."

Federal, state cooperation shuts down fraudulent documents operation
Suspect manufactured phony immigration documents, Social Security cards and driver’s licenses
WILMINGTON, Del. - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Tuesday the arrest of a Mexican national on federal charges that he was producing and misusing immigration documents. Pedro Altatenco-Luna has had his initial appearance in federal court for the District of Delaware and was ordered held in custody. Altatenco-Luna has been charged by the United States Attorney for the District of Delaware with violations of Title 18 USC 1028, Producing Identification Documents and Title 18 USC 1546, Fraud and Misuse of Immigration Documents.
The investigation was sparked when the Delaware State Police (DSP) became suspicious of a package identified through an undisclosed narcotics interdiction initiative. Further investigation by the DSP led to the discovery of approximately 200 suspected fraudulent I-551 resident alien cards (so called green cards). Also included in the package were homeland security document laminates with official seals and similar laminates for Mexican drivers licenses
The state police contacted ICE investigators from the Wilmington, Del., Office of Investigations and last Friday both agencies conducted a consent search at a location in New Castle. During the search agents uncovered equipment used to produce fraudulent identification documents, 1,000 document laminates and various resident alien cards, Social Security cards and Mexican, Ohio and Pennsylvania driver’s licenses in various stages of production.
“Making and selling counterfeit identity documents such as fake alien resident cards and Social Security cards help illegal aliens, criminals and even terrorists evade detection and embed themselves in our society,” said John P. Kelleghan special agent in charge of ICE’s Office of Investigation in Philadelphia. “This case started with the Delaware State Police and is an excellent example of state and federal cooperation.”
“This case exemplifies how local, state and federal agencies collaboratively work together to protect our communities,” said Colonel Thomas F. Mac Leish, Superintendent Delaware State Police. “The Northern Delaware Drug Task Force, which is comprised of DSP and the New Castle County Police, worked proactively with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement to seize hundreds of illegal documents that would have infiltrated our society. If undetected, these documents would have aided illegal persons to remain in our borders. This is a tremendous arrest that resulted in the cooperative efforts of all involved.”
The search also resulted in the seizure of typewriters, printers, cameras, computers, scanners and other material used to complete the documents. Altatenco-Luna faces a maximum of ten years in federal prison on the two charges.
Individuals and criminal enterprises often use fraudulent documents to obtain drivers’ licenses and social security cards. Traffickers and alien smugglers use these documents to facilitate movement into and within the United States and they are also used to shield illegal aliens from detection within our society. Fraudulent documents may be used to obtain financial benefits and entitlements intended for U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and to obtain unauthorized employment.
Document fraud is the manufacturing, counterfeiting, alternation, sale, and/or use of identity documents and other fraudulent documents to circumvent immigration laws or for other criminal activity. Benefit fraud is the knowing and willful misrepresentation of material fact on a petition or application to gain an immigrant benefit.

“Missile strike kills 12 in Pakistan tribal belt: officials”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) A missile strike early Thursday killed at least 12 people, most of them Arabs, in a Pakistani region known as a safe haven for Al-Qaeda militants, officials and residents said.
Residents in Azam Warsak village in South Waziristan told AFP that a house was destroyed by a missile fired from a pilotless drone and the loud blast was heard miles (kilometres) away in the rugged valley.
US drones have launched several previous strikes on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region targeting militants from Osama bin Laden’s network, although there was no immediate confirmation from Pakistani forces.
A spokesman for the US-led coalition force based in Afghanistan said neither it nor the separate NATO-headed force were involved in the strike.
“We have no reports that any of our forces are involved,” coalition spokesman Major Chris Belcher told AFP.
Security officials said they had received a report that a “guided missile” fired from neighbouring Afghanistan had hit a house belonging to a local tribesman at about 2:00 am Thursday (2100 GMT Wednesday).
“The death toll is now 12 to 13 people — three of the dead appear to be from Punjab (central Pakistani province where several militant groups are based) while the rest are Arabs,” a security official told AFP.
At least five people were also injured in the attack, officials added.
South Waziristan is the base of Baitullah Mehsud, an Islamist warlord accused by Pakistani and US officials of links to Al-Qaeda and of masterminding the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto.
The security officials said they had no information on who could have been targeted in the attack. The area is remote, and Pakistani troops have limited control in the lawless ethnic Pashtun tribal belt.”
