Police Union Says Reserve Officers Not Up To Par
Pamela Jones GARY, Ind. (CBS) A battle is brewing in Gary, Ind. over police recruits; the officer’s union says it’s tough to tell who’s a real police officer, as CBS 2’s Northwest Indiana Bureau Chief Pamela Jones reports.
They can carry weapons and wear a uniform similar to sworn officers in Gary, but the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) says many reserve officers can’t measure up.
(snip)
Also “scary,” because the FOP says some of the reserve officers have criminal histories.
“One of them in particular actually couldn’t get hired on by the police department because of his background. But now he’s out making arrests driving a police car,” Saviola said. ..snip

Email Death Threats (Michigan)
PORTAGE (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Someone’s sending death threats in an effort to extort thousands of dollars from frightened people.
The sender says he’s a killer contracted by one of your friends to take your life by whatever means necessary. Your only hope, to send $15,000. The e-mail also warns you not to contact police or tell anyone else. Or your family could also be targeted.
Portage police contacted the FBI, who says this is a scheme. They believe the sender is overseas possibly somewhere in Pakistan.....

Alert
Prepared by the
Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)
January 9, 2007
NEW TWIST CONCERNING THREAT AND EXTORTION E-MAILS
There is a new twist to the IC3 Alert posted on December 7, 2006 regarding e-mails claiming that the sender has been paid to kill the recipient and will cancel the contract on the recipient’s life if the recipient pays a large sum of money. Now e-mails are surfacing which claim to be from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in London. These e-mails note the following information:
An individual was recently arrested for the murders of several United States and United Kingdom citizens in relation to this matter.
The recipient’s information was found on the subject identifying the recipient as the next victim.
The recipient is requested to contact the FBI in London to assist with the investigation.
It is not uncommon for an Internet fraud scheme to have the same overall intent but be transmitted containing variations in the e-mail content, e.g., different names, e-mail addresses, and/or agencies reportedly involved.
WARNING!
Please note, providing any personal information in response to an unsolicited e-mail can compromise your identity and open you to identity theft.
If you have experienced this situation please notify the IC3 by filing a complaint at www.ic3.gov.
Due to the threat of violence inherent in these extortion e-mails, if an individual receives an e-mail that contains personally identifiable information that might differentiate their e-mail from the general e-mail spam campaign, the IC3 encourages the recipient of the e-mail to contact the police.
That should read: Again, not MUCH press coverage.

Expert: Saudi Arabian Bankers Fueling Global Islamic Jihad

(IsraelNN.com) Rachel Ehrenfeld, Director of the American Center for Democracy, said at the Jerusalem Conference Tuesday that Saudi Arabian bankers are the main financiers of global terrorism.
Corrupt Sharia financing banking practices - legal under Islamic law - are a fairly new phenomenon, Ehrenfeld said. They were first developed by the Muslim brotherhood in the 70s, following the financial power gained by Saudis during the oil boom.
Ehrenfeld at Jerusalem Conference
Saudis are using money in order to corrupt the West, to fund terrorism, and eventually to take over the West, said Ehrenfeld. For years, Saudi Arabia has been a main supporter of terrorism, both physically and financially, and their illegal activity is now causing many innocent investors to commit serious crimes without even the knowledge that they are doing so.
According to Ehrenfeld, Saudi Arabian bankers have roughly $1 trillion ready to be invested through means of what she terms financial Jihad. The financial practices she refers to as Sharia financing are run according to Islamic law, governed solely by the Koran and with no distinction between public and private practices. “Obama, Clinton Back Off Border-Fence Law”
By Terence P. Jeffrey
CNSNews.com Editor-in-Chief
February 22, 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - In a CNN debate in Austin, Texas, Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton agreed Thursday night that the Secure Border Fence Act of 2006, which directs the secretary of Homeland Security to construct 700 miles of double border fencing along specific sections of the U.S.-Mexico border, should not be enforced as written.
Stressing her desire to be deferential to the views of people who live along the border in Texas — which on March 4 will hold a primary that is widely viewed as a must-win event for the New York senator — Clinton said of a border fence, “there may be limited places where it would work. But let’s deploy more technology and personnel, instead of the physical barrier.”
“This is an area where Senator Clinton and I almost entirely agree,” said Obama. “I think that the key is to consult with local communities, whether it’s on the commercial interests or the environmental stakes of creating any kind of barrier.”
Both Clinton and Obama argued that the Bush administration was being too aggressive in pushing to build the border fence mandated by the 2006 law.
The agreement among the senators came in response to a question asked by CNN’s John King, one of the moderators of the debate.”

Body shop owners among six arrested by ICE in alien smuggling probe
California ring allegedly outfitted vehicles with hidden compartments to bring aliens into U.S.
LOS ANGELES - The father and son owners of an Oxnard, Calif., body shop were among six suspects arrested this morning by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on charges of running a human smuggling ring that outfitted vehicles with hidden compartments and used those vehicles to bring illegal aliens into the United States from Mexico.
Edgar “Chucky” Eduardo Aceves, 26, and his father, Eduardo Aceves-Murillo, 45, both of Oxnard, are charged in a six-count indictment that was returned yesterday afternoon by a federal grand jury. The indictment charges the Aceves with conspiracy to bring and transport illegal aliens for financial gain and related violations. Also named in the indictment are Eduardo’s daughter, Claudia Aceves, 22; two other Oxnard residents, David Fernandez, 29, and Gladys Anilu Leal, 24; and Jose Enrique Rodriguez, Jr., 23, of National City, Calif.
According to the indictment, Edgar and Eduardo Aceves, who own Chucky’s Auto Repair and Aceves Upholstery, bought extended cab pick-up trucks and SUVs, then modified the vehicles to smuggle illegal aliens into the United States. The indictment describes how they constructed hidden compartments behind the rear bench seats of the pick-up trucks, in audio speaker boxes, and in the center consoles of pick-ups and SUVs. At least one illegal alien, who was confined inside one of the compartments for a long period, suffered second-degree burns when the compartment overheated.
The defendants are accused of using the specially equipped vehicles to smuggle illegal aliens -including convicted criminals and unaccompanied juveniles - into the United States through ports of entry along the California-Mexico border. Based on evidence the organization knowingly smuggled criminal aliens into the country, the United States Attorney’s Office is charging members of the Aceves family with conspiring to smuggle previously deported aliens who had been convicted of aggravated felonies. This case marks the first time the charge, which carries enhanced penalties, has been used in the Central District of California.
“Criminal aliens are a known threat to residents of the United States,” said United States Attorney Thomas P. O’Brien. “My office devotes significant resources to identify, prosecute and incarcerate illegal aliens who commit other crimes while in this country. This alien smuggling ring knowing helped at least two criminal aliens enter the United States, and that conduct will lead to longer sentences.”
The indictment describes 25 smuggling incidents involving the Aceves organization going back nearly three years. The defendants allegedly charged aliens up to $3,000 to transport them from Mexico to Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
“This criminal organization went to great lengths to conceal their smuggling clients, but ultimately these defendants could not hide from the law,” said Kevin Kozak, deputy special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in Los Angeles. “This case shows yet again the desperate measures human smugglers will employ, and the risks they’ll take with others’ lives, all in an effort to turn a profit.”
The defendants are expected to make their initial appearances in United States District Court in Los Angeles this afternoon. The indictment alleges a conspiracy to bring and transport illegal aliens for private financial gain; bringing illegal aliens for private financial gain; and aiding, assisting, and conspiring to permit certain aliens to enter the United States. If convicted, Edgar and Eduardo Aceves each face mandatory minimum sentences of three years in federal prison. Edgar Aceves faces a statutory maximum sentence of 35 years in prison, and his father could be sentenced to as much as 25 years.
Today’s arrests are the latest development in an investigation that began more than two years ago. In March 2007, ICE agents executed four search warrants related to the case and arrested Arturo Rodriguez-Leon, 40, of Oxnard. Rodriguez-Leon pleaded guilty in September 2007 to smuggling a previously deported aggravated felon into the United States and is scheduled to be sentenced
March 3.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. ICE received substantial assistance in the investigation from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, including the San Diego Border Patrol Sector’s Smuggling Interdiction Group. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department also played a prominent role in the case and in today’s enforcement action.
Editor’s Note: Digital photos of some of the hidden compartments allegedly used by this smuggling organization are available on the ICE website at www.ice.gov or by contacting the ICE office of public affairs at (949) 360-3096.
