:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Press Release A071229a
December 29, 2007

Coalition forces target criminal networks; detain six suspects

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained six suspected Special Groups criminal element members Saturday during operations to disrupt terrorist networks in southern Iraq.

During an operation in the Ad Daghgharah area, Coalition forces targeted a suspected Special Groups leader and projectile weapons trainer who allegedly specialized in rocket propelled grenade (RPG) and mortar attacks against Coalition forces. The wanted individual was also reportedly an associate of several other senior-level criminal element leaders who were involved in attacks on Coalition forces.

Intelligence led ground forces to the target area, where they detained six suspected criminals without incident. The identities of the six suspects are still being determined.

“Much progress has been made in the pursuit of criminal elements who choose not to honor al-Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr’s cease-fire pledge,” said Cmdr. Scott Rye, MNF-I spokesperson. “Yet dangerous elements still exist. Iraqi and Coalition forces remain committed to protecting the Iraqi people from these vicious criminals.”

Press Release A071229b
December 29, 2007

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations; three killed, 34 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed three terrorists and detained 34 suspects Saturday during operations targeting al-Qaeda in central and northern Iraq.

During an operation north of Tikrit, Coalition forces targeted an associate of the al-Qaeda network operating in the Kirkuk province. The targeted individual is assessed to be involved in the facilitation of finances and materials for terrorist operations. When Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they called for the occupants to come out of the building. The ground force was then engaged by heavy enemy fire, and supporting aircraft was called to suppress the threat. Once the enemy fire ceased, the ground force assessed three terrorists were killed during the engagement. As the ground force cleared the area, they found a suicide belt, suicide vest and numerous weapons on site. All of the items were safely destroyed, along with a target building, to prevent further use by terrorists.

North of Tikrit, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be a member of the al-Qaeda network operating in the area. The wanted individual is also allegedly associated with the terrorist network in Samarra, including foreign terrorist facilitation operations throughout the Tigris River Valley. Reports indicate the individual also has ties to individuals targeted during an operation Nov. 12, when Coalition forces killed Abu Tiba, the leader of the terrorist network in Samarra. In addition to the wanted individual, Coalition forces detained five suspected terrorists during the operation. The ground force detained an additional suspect during an operation south of the city targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader believed to be involved in suicide attacks against Coalition forces.

During an operation west of Tarmiyah, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be a close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader of the network operating north of Baghdad. The network is responsible for the majority of car-bombing and improvised explosive device attacks in the area, as well as being involved in extortion, intimidation, weapons trafficking and the facilitation of foreign terrorists. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained 21 suspected terrorists during the series of operations. Coalition forces also destroyed one building in the target area that was assessed to be used as a safe house for terrorist operations.

Coalition forces also detained five suspected terrorists during an operation in Mosul while targeting an associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in the city. In the past few weeks, Coalition forces have detained three wanted individuals and more than 26 suspected terrorists associated with the network in Mosul, to include a suspect detained Dec. 13 believed to be a key associate of the al-Qaeda leader for northern Iraq.

“Terrorists have no safe haven in Iraq,” said Cmdr. Ed Buclatin, MNF-I spokesman. “We will continue our operations to hunt down al-Qaeda in Iraq’s leaders and operatives and to foil their attempts to destabilize the country.”

“Ethiopia leaves key Somali town”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Ethiopian troops have withdrawn from a key town in central Somalia.

Islamist insurgents say they now control Guriel, where Ethiopia had a big military base to secure the road linking the two countries.

A BBC correspondent in Somalia says it is not clear why the Ethiopian troops withdrew without any fighting.”

Morocco jails 15 convicted inner spiritual strugglers
A potpourri of charges. “Morocco jails 15 people convicted of terror links,” from Agence France-Presse:

RABAT: Morocco’s anti-terrorist tribunal has jailed 15 Islamists for between one and four years in three separate cases on conviction of terrorist activity or connections, the MAP news agency reported Friday. The special court in Sale near Rabat sentenced seven people late on Thursday to between one and two years in prison after the prosecution accused them of links to May 2003 attacks in Casablanca which killed 45 people, including 12 suicide bombers. Another group of seven were jailed for four years each after being found guilty of receiving paramilitary training with Algeria’s extremist Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which was in January renamed the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Those seven, who included a former resident in Belgium and two ex-students in Syria, allegedly wanted to go to Iraq to fight a “holy war.” The 15th case concerned Jawad Tarmil, a Moroccan expelled from Algeria, who was accused of GSPC membership and jailed for two years for forming a criminal group, terrorist activity and serious breaches of public order, MAP reported.

Yeah right, those cards will certainly stay on them,

I met a man a few weeks ago from Wyoming who was thinking of buying land in southern Arizona. I told him they couldn’t pay me to live there and explained why. A lot of people still don’t have a clue how dangerous the southwest is becoming.

Parts of Texas already look and sound like Tijuana with the crime to go along with it.

Thanks for the ping MamaD.

Happy New Year to all. We have a chance next year to save this country by electing the right President. Somehow, I fear, we won’t.

I appreciate you posting the link to that article Velveeta; that is one of the craziest pieces of writing I've read in quite a while. I wish "journalists" would simply report the facts and not spin their personal agenda.

*sigh* I know, I'm dreaming again :-)

“Bomb in Baghdad Kills at Least 7 In Crowd of Mostly Shiite Shoppers
Iraq Threatens to Cut Off Oil to S. Korea Over Kurdish Contract”

By Joshua Partlow and Zaid Sabah
Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, December 29, 2007; Page A12

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “BAGHDAD, Dec. 28 — Twice on the road to the bombing scene Friday, carloads of young Iraqi men sped by in the opposite direction. The jubilant wedding revelers leaned out of their windows gesturing wildly as they drove through the streets.

Just three miles away, blackened concrete blast walls, pools of dirty water and charred pieces of market stalls marked the site of Baghdad’s most recent bombing, in which a vehicle rigged with explosives detonated in a crowd of mostly Shiite shoppers. Seven to 14 people were killed, according to various accounts, and at least 29 were wounded.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Friday’s blast occurred in Tayaran Square, east of the Tigris River, near a barricaded bazaar of vegetable carts and used-clothing dealers. The U.S. military said seven people were killed and 29 wounded. Iraqi police officials cited higher tolls: 14 killed and more than 60 wounded.”

Protesters Could Disrupt Rose Parade
AP ^ | December 29, 2007 | SOLVEJ SCHOU
Posted on 12/29/2007 1:54:45 PM PST by Dominic01

There could be some discord during the Tournament of Roses Parade as demonstrators promise to raise issues during the holiday spectacle that has been going on for more than a century. Human rights advocates plan to protest a float honoring the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and anti-war activists, including “Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan, intend to rally for peace.

The theme of this year’s New Year’s Day parade is “Passport to the World’s Celebrations.” It will feature 46 floats, 21 marching bands and 18 equestrian units...

If only America were as strict with foreigners coming into this country as Mexico is.

You're welcome Oorang. IMHO there's NO reason America can't be as strict if not more strict than Mexico about those coming in across our borders. Why we are NOT able to do that is the question of the minute, hour, day and time in perpetuity. I'm not holding my breath that those in charge of national security share the concerns of about 85% of American citizens.

Mystery container found on beach

Experts are trying to identify a huge metal container that has been washed up on a beach in the Western Isles.

The tank, which is 27m high, has no markings and is thought to have fallen from a ship before being washed up on the west of Benbecula.

It was discovered by a dog walker on Poll Na Crann beach - known locally as Stinky Bay - near Griminish.

Stornoway Coastguard is using two numbers on the container to try to find out where the item has come from.
