Looking at the votes still to be counted in MO it is bad news for Talent. He still has half of St. Louis County still to go. MT and VA are toast. 51-49 Democrats
I see it all the time with boomers and older people as well. However, the younger people I know - generally speaking - are either totally apathetic about politics or believe what they hear on CNN, Oprah, The View, liberal newspapers and websites/blogs. Or worse - they actually believe what they're hearing on The Daily Show, Colbert Report, etc. is the TRUTH.
This is actually opportunity for the GOP to get back to the principles of Reagan, putforth strong conservative candidates and sweep back into power against the Hillary-Pelosi disaster that will unfold.
But, the GOP is at a crossroads. If the party is dominated by a RINO like McCain, they could be looking at minority status for some time.
"We have no chance in 08 without McCain..."
We have no hope in 08 with McCain.
I don't see how they can think they were too conservative, when the Democrats looked for the most conservative/moderate candidates to run.(or at least those who could appear that way)
No, 1986 was not a similar year. The Rats won Senate seats that we unexpectedly got in the landslide year of 1980. This year, the Rats won additional seats that they failed to win in what, for them, was the good Senate year of 2000. We also did not lose 32 or so seats in the House in 1986. Election 2006 was a horror, and short of a political earthquake that is almost impossible to foresee, we will not be able to repair the damage in 2008. Likely as not, it will get worse before it begins to get better.
Two silver linings: One, Bush is through as GOP leader, and deservedly so. Same with Frist and Hastert. Good riddance, chumps. Two, the American people will get a slightly better idea that it's really the Rats who are running things in this country. This was a hidden reality under the "Republican government" that accomplished almost nothing. Now it's out in the open. Are the American people smart enough to learn the appropriate lessons. Stay tuned. I wouldn't bet on it. But we can hope.
We sufferred a defeat today, but until Republicans realize why we lost, it will happen again, and the stakes will be much higher in two year.
First, Republicans need to come to grip that the war in Iraq is not popular, even among Republicans. You can blame the media, democrats, whoever, but the fact remains the same. If the conditions in Iraq are the same two years from now as they are today, kiss the White House goodbye folks.
Yes, I agree with you. The wound from last night is still open though. There were many, many times over the past 2 years I was real angry with my own representatives. I wrote them, called them, and wrote some more. It seemed they were not listening, at all. One letter was all I got back with a response that made my blood boil. A response trying to justify a chunk of pork barrel spending tied onto the budget.
Yesterday, I didn't withdraw my vote from the party even though my party has withdrawn from me.
Don't count out Virginia yet. Ther's enough irregularities there for a semi full of Pepto-Bismol!
Please, losing an election can not be compared with that horrible day. We lost and election (I was surprised),it's not the end of the world. We can regroup and carry on finding good candidate in 08.
Look, let's not go there. If Webb won and it appears he did, then let's accept it and move on. I am sick of litigating elections-bad for the country. You win some you lose some. We will be back!
I dunno. If it's within a percentage point, you should demand and expect the recount. That's not litigating or calling foul. That's just a prudent "are you sure?"
(ducking)

As I've said all along, the chief benefactor of weakening the Repub party is Hillary and with Pelosi as Speaker of the House, Hillary is smiling from ear to ear. The monster behind the scenes is Mandy Grunwald, Bubba's last campaign manager.
There's a VERY easy answer for this. It's called "recess appointment", and YES, it has been done with U.S. Supreme Court justices in the past. The most prominent was none other than Earl Warren, recess-appointed by Eisenhower.
I don't think Dubya has the inclination or guts to do this, of course.
Maybe he'll re-nominate Harriet Miers (HOWLS of laughter). She'll make it this time!

The blame for this rests squarely with national GOP leadership which completely abandoned the party base. Don't blame me I voted GOP, I hated to see the Rats take the House.
Isn't a recess appointment only good for a limited time though?
In a perverse way, I agree with you. That is exactly what Bush should do. You voted for the Dems. Okay. Out of Iraq - now! Wiretapping - stopped! Patriot Act - scrapped! Looking at bank transactions - no more! Higher taxes - we raise it up to 75 %, across the board! Hell, that is the new direction people want, so let's give it to them!
exactly, it think thats what he should say today, and then say "Americans need to realize that voting for Democrats has consequences"
Yeah, they can all go to IRAQ!
