October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

Indeed. Running off documents on your computer and pretending that they were typewritten in 1972 - that's pretty stupid. Couldn't somebody have sprung for an actual typewriter? Unconsciously, Ms. Mapes explains this mystery: she and her colleagues were stuck in the past. To their thinking, it didn't matter if somebody realized the 'memos' were fake; the public generally would never hear about it, as long as the media did not question (and the New York Times certainly didn't).

Typical liberal response. Got caught in a lie? Blame someone (or something) else.
Woo-hoo! This is the best publicity not even money could buy.

Well, gee, Mapes, if you didn't do anything wrong, why were you canned? You're just mad because you got caught for once.

Just ask Kronkite, Mapes. He says we are all too dumb to elect the right people.

Don't worry, Mary. FR is now on a jihad against the President. I agree with you.

Mapes ignorance shows! Her real problem is that she spent her career parroting the tripe of Dan Blather and his ilk. The Internet has stripped these liberal zealots of their control and monopoly of the news.
Don't cry Mapes, just go away!

It's interesting that in the year since we brought old Rather down, not one document of any kind from the 1970s has surfaced with the kind of typography found in the CBS memo. And not one typewriter or type ball with the necessary characteristics has surfaced.
I was one of those urging caution on the night in question, because I had used a Composer in 1974. I knew, of course, that no military secretary could possibly have access to a Composer, or could use it to type routine memos, but I was worried about a setup.
It wasn't until the next day when the detailed analysis demonstrated the fonts were different that I was absolutely certain. All in all it took about 24 hours to demolish 60 Minutes.
That could make the title of a movie: "60 Minutes: Gone in 24 Hours."
