You have no way of knowing that.

Hughes was also on the three-judge panel that originally decided Roe v. Wade (on the state level), overturning Texas' law against abortion.

1988 was the height of Gore's attack on indecent song lyrics. Dee Snider can attest to that.

If you'll notice, I am also wondering what she will do about the eminent domain issue.

Personally, I think the most important thing about this nomination is that the President's nominee replace O'Conner as soon as possible. On the issues coming up before the USSC this year, we KNOW that O'Conner will vote against the conservative position.

I hope she's on the bench within a month, and we can say Good-by to O'Conner.

That's right. Hughes was the district judge that first heard the Roe case.

Being here longer doesn't make your position any more correct.

Never said it did. Patience was the issue.

We have been patient. Bush betrayed us. That is not reactionary, it is simply the light finally coming on that Bush is not doing 'head fakes' - there is now no doubt, he is not conservative.

"The reason we're unhappy (to put it mildly) is because he RENEGGED ON HIS WORD and did not pick a justice "in the mold of Scalia and Thomas". FNC just said.."a number of Democrats suggested she would be a good choice". And THIS makes you comfortable?!! She has ZERO judicial experience. THIS is qualification to be on SCOTUS?!! For the love of God!"

Thank you. My thoughts exactly.
Of course, some Freepers will now accuse you of being a "drama queen" and "whining" and a DU spy... blah, blah, blah... when, in fact, they're as intolerent of contrary opinions as any RAT could possibly be.

Well, to all of you smirkers... This is a discussion board, and if GWB does something a bunch of us thinks SUCKS (uh, oh! I must be immature, too, huh?) we're going to say it. And if you whine that we're "whining" or that we're "breaking up the party" etc -- screw you. I'd rather be part of breaking up a party than a non-thinking party HACK, willing to accept any kind of political betrayal rather than rock the boat.

In the interest of a FACTUAL discussion......

"Harriet has also earned a reputation for her deep compassion and abiding sense of duty. In Texas, she made it her mission to support better legal representation for the poor and under-served. As president of the Dallas Bar, she called on her fellow lawyers to volunteer and staff free neighborhood clinics. She led by example. She put in long hours of pro bono work. Harriet Miers has given generously of her time and talent by serving as a leader with more than a dozen community groups and charities, including the Young Women's Christian Association, Child Care Dallas, Goodwill Industries, Exodus Ministries, Meals on Wheels and the Legal Aid Society."

Quoting PRESIDENT BUSH

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, but given the dynamics, perhaps this appointment is part of a lure or quiet agreement to get Stevens to step down after this term?

OK, that's kinda out there. But the lady on FNC just made a good point: HM vetted and put forth all those excellent judicial appointments that President Bush has previously nominated, with which conservatives have been very pleased.

Are you kidding me? These are on her resume. If that's not a fact, what is? Or is your statement just an attempt to deflect from the absence of mitigating information? Can you produce any facts at all?

"Maybe they both know she's a sacrificial lamb and if she's shot down the Prez will come back with a real hot conservative next time....."

I don't think Harriet would go along with this. Nor do I think that GWB, for all of his seiious faults, is a mean guy and this idea is just plain mean. Finally, I don't think that with 55 Senators, you need to be all that cute. You just have to be prepared to fight for what is good.

The only argument that the Bush supporters here have is trust Bush, either b/c he is such a good deeply religious man, or because Rove is a genius. We need something better.

And I would be surprised if Miers doesn't sail through (with the customary display of a faux fight from the Dems...for the cameras' sake, of course).

I haven't known her but I know enough about Bailey-Hutchison. It doesn't take a psychic to figure this nomination out.

In 88, I would would have described myself that way, too. Didn't vote in two presidential elections in a row because I didn't at that time like Reagan's people (callowness of youth), and I HATED the Democratic nominees.

What bothers me is that it looks like she stuck to the dems while the dems were in power, then when the pubbies started gaining control ion TX she switched to the winning side. It sounds more like opprotunism than ideological change of heart.

I don't know about Miers, but in Texas, like in many areas of Southern states, for years there were a lot of "closet Republicans."

Politically and career-wise, it was difficult to be a Republican. Texas was pretty early in shifting from "D" to "R" and is going strong.

Like I said, I don't know about Miers, but there have been a lot of Texas party switchers...Phil Gramm comes to mind.
