The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

And I'm tired of having to defend the mayor of a destroyed city just because politics puts him, or you, or whoever on the wrong side of the fence.

You know what I'm tired of? People like you assuming because I say he's a dumbass it's because he's not a Republican.

The mayor and ALL of the officials of New Orleans and Louisiana as a whole warned everyone beginning Friday that this storm was not going to turn, that it was a worst-case scenario, and that everyone had to get out.

Absolutlely NOT true. In fact, on Saturday morning, while standing next to the governor who was suggesting that everybody pray that the winds died down, he failed to mention that HE had already HELICOPTERED his family out.

And they did not even come close to saying it was the worst case scenario.

A mandatory evacuation in a major US city is a significant order to give. They did it, and were as blunt as could be that people needed to leave.

Yeah, they did it: Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. AFTER the President of the United States called them up and told them to do it.

A city like New Orleans does not have the means, or the equipment, or the manpower to deal with a disaster like this.

You mean they don't have the money to take care of their OWN city?

THat's been the fear all along.

All the more reason to have a PLAN and implement it at the FIRST sign of a hurricane coming, period.

There was no solution.

That's it, throw up your hands and don't do anything except whine!

With no money, what good would a paper "plan" have been?

The people of New Orleans choose to live there; they need to pony up some $$$ to at least give the appearance of taking care of their own problems.

To: Trust but Verify

Seems the sandbags NO was supposed to have stockpiled nearby were nowhere to be found, so they had to improvise.

Seems they found them and have been filling them, so as soon as they can drop a barge in the gap to provide a good base, they'll really start sandbagging the levee.

I understand that the "officials" of the areas involved are in a very stressful situation, but, to just simply throw up one's hands and say that the plan is to have a day of prayer, while the other "official" is yucking it up with Larry king while his citizens are gasping for air in the attics of their homes is a gross display of weakness and apathy.

You're both right, and I'm giving up. It's not solving anything, just making me more upset. People really need to pull together for New Orleans right now, just like they did for NYC. I hesitate to even bring that up, but let's be frank, this is a major disaster, and people and a city need serious help fast.

We can argue about whose responsibility it is, but from where I'm sitting, everyone needs to be doing more. I can hardly watch the news anymore. I'm going to give to the Red Cross, but other than that, it feels pretty helpless.

Folks at the dome are given two MRE a day and water....But you are correct about the lawless....The obviously don't want any assistance....Remind me of the Unicorn Song...How the unicorns frolicked and played when the rain started and Noah was filling the ark. You know what happened to them!

ANother thought that popped into my mind...THE Army is able to lay temporary bridges (for moving troops) in a matter of minutes....Wonder if we'll see something like that done...With the folks walking out to board buses.

I'm not done with you yet.

First of all, the lake will drain into the city basin(s) until it is equalized and that should be that.

Except if the tide comes in and in that case (depending on the tide range) it could dump another 1 to 2 feet of water in to the city through the lake.

And don't be so sure that the lake tidal flow will escape easier to the Gulf with the bowls still lower than the Gulf.

Once the levee to the lake was breached there was virtually no way to keep the water back until equilibrium which will now be subject to tidal conditions on the spring side but not on the neep side.

Has anyone else noticed that virtually every anchor talking head refers to the water as "dissipating" as if it's going to flow uphill?

Yep. I'm starting to expect John F. Kerry to show up here and tell us all how he would have sprung into action to save New Orleans if only HE'D been mayor. ;)

Tell me again...which side of the Mekong Delta is NO on?

No cheers, due to Katrina.

The mayor of a city is in charge of the first responders, the police, firemen, and medical personnel. The governor is in charge of everything else. This is America. The chief executive has power over the affairs of a state and the federal government can not get involved unless asked by the chief executive of the state. Eventually, the president will take over because these people have failed so miserably.
