The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Well according to the NYTimes the Navy is sending ships and now I read FEMA is definitely considering using Cruise Ships:

FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

Lokey said he anticipated FEMA will set up a permanent office in the area.

Recovery will take so long, he said, that some workers could spend their entire career working on Katrina.

"This is the most significant natural disaster to hit the United States," Lokey said.

Children's Hospital under seige

Tuesday, 11:45 p.m.

Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond.

Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. However, Bottcher said, the National Guard has also been unable to respond.

Nor is it racist to point out that the looters being shown are predominantly black. IT IS A FACT.They are CHOOSING to loot items that are not necessities. Food is one thing. Jewelry and TVs are quite another.

It is a conscious choice to STEAL ANYTHING THEY CAN GET THEIR HANDS ON. Now reporters are scared to do their job. It is effectively a War Zone.

Btw, if the looters were predominantly WHITE I would have said the same thing. I get sick and tired of people yelling racist when stating the facts of the matter. LIKE..terrorists that want to destroy us tend to be Muslim.

You can point that finger at anyone, is all I'm saying. He is the mayor of a cash-strapped, geographically doomed (but lucky until now) city, in the poorest state in the union (I believe). There really isn't a whole lot of preperation to be done. Ultimate catastrophes and crises like these are exactly the situations we depend on the federal government, including the Nat'l Guard, FEMA, and now Homeland Security, to spring into action for.

Your fighting a losing battle. These people know nothing about New Orleans and are just looking for a scapegoat and have found it in the mayor.

No no no no no no. (*shakes head*) You're making the mistake of trying to be fair about this. Don't you understand? This natural disaster has to be somebody's FAULT.

There is indeed a lock on the river side. Look for the pic I posted. There has to be, and is. But if the waters in NO defy gravity, and rise 5-8 feet or more above sea level, Torie is wrong about something. I assume it is not about Newtonian physics. But what it is I don't know!

That is a heart stopping story.

It was hair raising. The water was up to my knees while sitting in the cab and just below the turbo when I broke through. Half the engine was under water. The counterweight in back was bound up in the mud so I couldn't even swing the bucket from side to side--just splash water in front of me until the dam gave way.

but it is totally obvious that he did not have any kind of viable plan for this event.

Ah, but he did; it was the "It's gonna turn" plan.

The irony is that these were the same folks who were superciliously laughing at Pat Robertson.

Full Disclosure: I dunno if God turned that other hurricane, or turned down the volume on this one at the last minute...Read Matthew 8:23-27 followed immediately by Luke 13: 1-4.
For those of you inclined to argue the point either way, save your breath and effort and do something to help those hit by Katrina instead of pointless flaming.

Second Disclosure: I hope that Mississippi and Alabama are not neglected in the rush to "help" NO. It looks like the entire infrastructure of much of the US Gulf Coast is...toast. Prayers for the rescue workers, and prayers for endurance as > 1 x 10**6 people try to rebuild their lives.

Think that was me. It's the only thing nearby that might still be floating that's big enough to use.

The only problem is that they can't get their special barges into the area because of the debris in the river, and the hurricane scattered everyone else's barges to hell and gone.

Tulane has been waiting for evacuation since this time last night.

This isn't going to end well... my intuition tells me this is going to be even worse than anyone imagines.

To say that people stayed because they couldn't "afford" to leave -- well, what can you say?

I don't know the particulars of lake P, but from the photos of the bridges damaged that I have seen, it looks likr nearly ALL of the fallen bridge sections fell at odd angles in to the lake, and are still there... could these have a significant effect on outflow?

I dunno, but some of those slabs of I-10 would make dandy temporary additions to the levees...if we only had Paul Bunyan, Babe the Blue Ox, and the Jolly Green Giant to wade through the flotsam and jetsam and carry them over.

Full Disclosure: Anyone notice how much the Gulf Coast resembles Isengard after the Ents got done with it?

Because the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is there to help in a crisis does NOT MEAN that it has to micro manage every city, every town, every county and state when it comes to PROTECTING that states people in a crisis...what if FIFTY large cities had a castrophy at the same time?

The GOVERNOR of each state takes an OATH to protect his citizens....a plan could have been in place....a PLAN....some THOUGHT....so that when the federal government comes in with its resources..things are in motion and there is a definitive plan to follow.

And please cite where this mayor or that governor ordered an evacuation on Friday? I missed that one. I heard a suggestion to get out of dodge as it were, but I did not hear a mandatory evacuation order until our heard our President make one...followed the next day, Sunday, by the mayor and governor.

Yep. I'm starting to expect John F. Kerry to show up here and tell us all how he would have sprung into action to save New Orleans if only HE'D been mayor. ;)
