There was talk last night that SC Justice Clarence Thomas was stuck in NO. I haven't seen anything today about this. Anyone have further information?

From bwteim on the previous thread:

I think that is per quart. http://extension.usu.edu/publica/foodpubs/watersto.htm

"Chlorine Treatment: Liquid chlorine bleach can be used to disinfect water for long-term storage. One gallon can be treated by the addition of ¼ teaspoon of liquid chlorine bleach containing 4 to 6 percent sodium hypochlorite. (Most bleaches contain 5.25 percent.) This is equivalent to 16 drops of liquid chlorine bleach."

My father in Panama City Beach sent me this message. Glad to see he missed out on this one.

Things here ok.  Lots of wind and rain but more like a thunder storm than hurricane or tropical depression.    The bullet whizzed by us again.  We were lucky.

ABC News had a reporter in Mobile. Towards the end of his report, he had a video of the oil rig platform that was in for repairs. That is what hit the bridge. Nothing was mentioned in his report about the USS Alabama, so maybe that's a good thing?

Agree with you, Mariabush! One of the best first response groups has often been the Salvation Army...there are other groups, too.

How are things in Monkey Town? We've had three tornado warnings here in Lee County already.

"Of course, he is speaking to the wide area affected, which is going to get bigger as this thing continues. "

I fear don-o that by tomorrow this time we will just be saying OMG!! The little news that is beginning to trickle out does not bode well for portions of NO, Mississippi and Alabama. Haley Barbour sounded dowright despondent about the people living in his State of Miss. near the coast.

There was even a little delay in finding out the damage with Charley in the Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte area.

Since some areas were perfectly fine and adjoining areas were devastated, depending on where a reporter happened to be, the news seemed contradictory.

BTW, that area is still not "back to normal" and it's been a year.

Apparently last year in Florida, the Mormons came from all over with truckloads of tarps, which they put on peoples' roofs for free.

I know! Our kids in Foley are going to be real experts at putting up and taking down their plywood. Better that they are the ones doing it than the wind.

Quote "Thanks. Red Cross would not give anyone on my husband's medivac flight coffee, donuts or cigarettes unless they paid. All were donated items. Just one thing that made me mad."

It's not the job of the Red Cross to give you cigarettes or anyone else for that matter.

heh

The job of the Red Cross is to help sustain life during and after a disaster. They are helping hundreds of thousands of people. There are NOT other groups out there opening up all these shelters.

One tornado warning. Wind blowing about 30 MPH on and off. MY baby trees have blown over again. :-( After Ivan I replanted them, after dennis I replanted them and put some poles down. But the poles have come up with the trees. Guess Iwill have to go deeper with the support poles.

Has anyone heard anything about the condition of St. Tammany Parish? Specifically interested in the lakefront area of Mandeville.

"That's exactly right. I had visions of over 10,000 dead today just last evening. It is going to be a fraction of that."

Exactly what I've been thinking. As for the oil facilities, I've been scared sick about the damage to them (and the natural outcome of it) for days now. People are already screaming "PC politics" because the president mentioned the POSSIBILITY of using SOME federal oil reserves to offset the production loss from Katrina. You'll hear more conspiracy theories about that.

IMO, not enough people will appreciate how many people survived or that the warning system worked pretty darned well and helped ensure a lot of those survivors. By next week the human side of the story will be no more than a footnote to the fingerpointing, politics and conspiracy mongering in TV. Really sad.

Interesting. My Mom was an RN at Mass General in Boston for over 20 years. She always said she would never donate to the Red Cross after having to deal with them on a professional level. She always gave to The Salvation Army.

That can be heartbreaking. I have a friend in Greenville who lost 200 year old oaks after Ivan went through.

Wow, on NBC they just showed video of when the first tear in the Superdome's roof fabric began. The sound was a horrific banging of metal, and combined with the sight must have been terrifying for those sitting underneath. Surely some of their first reactions for many of those seated beneath in those exposed seats were to wonder if that was the beginning of a total collapse of the building.
