LOS ANGELESThe head of U.S Border Patrol on Wednesday unveiled radiation detectors to scan incoming ocean cargo for nuclear weapons and dirty bombs, a measure he says will not choke the flow of trade at the nations busiest port complex.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Robert C. Bonner said the 20-foot-high devices would substantially boost security at the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor complex without causing major delays.
We have to save American lives, but we also have to do it in a way ... that preserves American livelihoods, Bonner said during a visit to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
The dual ports handle more than 40 percent of all cargo shipped into this country, and 80 percent of the imports from Asian manufacturing countries such as China and India.

It ain't no accident that we haven't been attacked since 9/11. Thank you President Bush
Whom shall we thank for the shoddy border policy that enabled 10,000,000 illegals and countless moles and terrorist operatives to entrench themselves since 9/11?
I heard a blurb today that the LA Port was encouraging ships to come through on 'off peak' times by charging less for processing than during 'peak times'...maybe this security story was related...of course I also heard that the Union was upset that this would create more work during the evening hours for 'less pay'...I probably heard this on FoxNews, but I have not sought out the specific weblink for the story...
Lets see, we have a 600 billion dollar trade deficite with China and we are worried about slowing the flow of trade?
Perhaps we should hire a couple of senior citizens to examine every single item coming in from China--one item at a time. Being seniors, we would naturally have to give them frequent breaks. Straighten out the balance of trade real quick!
No bombs or illegals would get through either.
Yes, we are. If the goods don't clear Customs quickly, businesses who use "just-in-time" inventory lose money. I was involved in a software project related to this and I learned a lot from the requirements meeting.
Customs doesn't have to check everything; its software does a good job of telling what's normal shipping and what isn't.
How would you possibly know this? What if plans are in effect for an attack sometime in the near future.
If the President is so security minded, why are millions entering our country illegally, completely undetected?
The longshoreman's union is the only thing that chokes the ports to death, another monopoly situation.
If the goods don't clear Customs quickly China goes belly up and can't afford those nukes they are planning for US! Businesses can buy American.
There is a huge new facility being built in Houston to unload ships from several Asian companies that have been using California ports. The waiting time in California is cause by not enough union workers according to our press.
Because Tancred & Co. are blocking the legislation the Sec of Homeland Defense testified are necessary to securing our border. Tancredo would rather have the issue for his fund raising than secure the border.
Whose side are you on, the man in charge of defending us or the professional fundraiser?
