(Groton-AP, May 13, 2005 Updated 9:25 AM) _ Southeastern Connecticut could take a big economic hit.

The Associated Press has learned the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton is on the Pentagon's list of proposed base closures.

A U.S. Army Reserve Center in New Haven and Air Guard Station at Bradley Airport are also on the Pentagon list to be shut down.

The Pentagon went to great lengths to keep the list under wraps. Anyone who worked on it, from outside consultants to military officers inside the Pentagon, was required to sign a nondisclosure statement to prevent information leaking out.

This list won't be easy to come by ...

I am in Panama City Beach, FL and am hoping to hear good news. I feel very bad for the others who have already been announced. It's easy for me to put myself in their shoes because I realize how much it will affect their communities. I wish someone could post the entire list!

So do you really believe that they are closing bases based on the fact that a state didn't vote the right way? I find that hard to believe...but heh what do I know.

Were you kidding or serious?

Ellsworth comes up in every list. I'd be surprised if they did close Ellsworth.

Will these base closings coincide with the building of the Voinovich memorial tollway?

Senator James Inhofe just announced all Oklahoma bases are safe and in fact, our bases will be gaining. Fort Sill (Army) will have the largest gain of 3500.

Great Day for the State of Oklahoma who went for the President in all our counties, have open skies to fly, an open firing range at Fort Sill that the town of Lawton doesn't hate and love our military.

Altus is going to lose the C-5 and gain more C-117's, Tinker and Vance AFBs are going to gain personnel in the realignment along with the above mentioned Fort Sill. Our Tulsa ANG will gain more F-16's and our OKC National Guard will lose the C-130's they have and get newer aircraft. The Army at McAllister will remain untoched where conventional bombs are made.

Senator Inhofe gets our praise and thanks for all his hard work in seeing our Oklahoma bases have been upgraded over the years and able to stand the scutiny of DoD.

SC Rep. Clyburn tells local media:
BRAC will be bad news for Charleston, SC
Naval Weapons Station - realigned
Defense Finance & Accounting - closed
South Naval Facilities & Engineering Command (I have many friends there)- closed

Nav Fac jobs are very high paying.
News is saying Charleston will lose 800 jobs. That sounds low.

33 Major U.S. Bases Would Close Under Plan
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon will propose shutting 150 military installations from Maine to Hawaii, including 33 major bases, The Associated Press learned Friday, triggering the first round of base closures in a decade and an intense struggle by communities to save their facilities.

More than 100 other smaller facilities would also be closed, including scores of Reserve and National Guard installations. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld will announce the Pentagon's recommendations Friday morning. He has said the move would save $48.8 billion over 20 years while reshaping the military for America's expected 21st century adversaries.

Among the major closures is Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, home to 29 B-1B bombers, half the nation's fleet of the aircraft, and the state's second largest employer.

During the 2004 campaign, Republican John Thune told voters that if elected to replace then Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, his GOP ties would ensure that the base remained open. Daschle said that as minority leader, he would have an appointment to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission and be in a better position to help Ellsworth.

Senators are releasing information that was given out at 9:15 a.m. (EDT) to States/Congress. Senator held a live telephone conference here in Oklahoma from D.C. where he is trying to get the highway bill passed.

Mass. Base Closings, Changes Announced Otis, Westover Affected POSTED: 9:19 am EDT May 13, 2005 UPDATED: 9:35 am EDT May 13, 2005 BOSTON -- Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod is on a list of United States military bases that the Department of Defense is recommending be closed, but both Westover Air Force base and Hanscom Air Force base would gain under the proposed plan. A list of base recommendations sent to a member of Massachusetts Congressional delegation also listed Portsmouth Naval Air Base in Maine as one of the installations that would also be closed under the proposal. More than 4,000 civilian jobs would be lost if that recommendation were followed. The Pentagon is proposing that Maloney U.S. Army Reserve Center, Otis Air Guard Base and Westover U.S. Army Reserve Center in Chicopee, Mass., be closed under the plan. Barnes Municipal Airport Air Guard Station, Hanscom Air Base and Westover AFB, would gain under the proposal.

Does not make sense.
