Mass. Base Closings, Changes Announced Otis, Westover Affected POSTED: 9:19 am EDT May 13, 2005 UPDATED: 9:35 am EDT May 13, 2005 BOSTON -- Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod is on a list of United States military bases that the Department of Defense is recommending be closed, but both Westover Air Force base and Hanscom Air Force base would gain under the proposed plan. A list of base recommendations sent to a member of Massachusetts Congressional delegation also listed Portsmouth Naval Air Base in Maine as one of the installations that would also be closed under the proposal. More than 4,000 civilian jobs would be lost if that recommendation were followed. The Pentagon is proposing that Maloney U.S. Army Reserve Center, Otis Air Guard Base and Westover U.S. Army Reserve Center in Chicopee, Mass., be closed under the plan. Barnes Municipal Airport Air Guard Station, Hanscom Air Base and Westover AFB, would gain under the proposal.

Does not make sense.

One is the US Army reserve at Westover, the other is the Air Force base at Westover.

The consolidation of 3 AF bases into 2 in Mass makes sense.
