So do you really believe that they are closing bases based on the fact that a state didn't vote the right way? I find that hard to believe...but heh what do I know.

I am serious about Sen. John Sununu. He is an opportunist, his father, GHWB's chief of staff caused his slip in the polls two years before reelection paving the way for Perot, by way of convincing him that to renege on his "read my lips" pledge would not hurt him.

The truth is, that federal money will have to pour into Portsmouth Navy Yard if they ever close it because it is a very "hot" site. It has been a major nuclear reactor repair and refueling base for about 40 years and from what I know of the base it won't be easy to clean up. That alone may keep it off the final list even if it only minimally operates. Portsmouth is also one of the few natural deep water harbors we have. That should keep the military interested in a minimal presence as well.
