Serious question about Brit Bashing on Free Republic...
Posted on 11/05/2004 2:53:54 PM PST by BritishBulldog
Just lately (noticeably since the US election result) there seems to be an awful lot of anti-British sentiment on here (there always was a little but I put that down to a handful of xenophobic kiddies)
What I would like to know is do most Freepers now share the low opinion that some (many) on here seem to have of our nation or is it just a small (but very vocal) minority of morons?
I've enjoyed this forum (for the relatively short time that I've contributed) and have always liked Americans in general, but I now find myself reconsidering my thoughts on both.
If we Brits are not liked or wanted around here, I think I'll probably discontinue my involvement.

Right, the Mirror is the British equivalent to the National Enquirer in the States.

Don't be so sensitive to a few remarks. The majority of FReepers have welcomed your imput. Try walking a mile in our shoes - if you believe the world media, we are the most hated country in the world and Bush supporters are the most hated people. And again, if you believe your GB media polls, most Brits are among those who hate us. So maybe we have a little chip on our shoulders right now - just look past it.
And btw, my Air Force father was stationed at Ipswitch during WW2 and had nothing but good things to say about your country.

Not at all - we love Monty Python and most British sit-coms. The British accent still holds a large appeal.
The bashing comes in because we've seen a lot of anti-American statements from across the pond. Yes, they're in the far-left papers such as the Guardian, but there appears to be a general anti-American feeling among the general populace over there. I think Blair has done great with regard to doing the right but unpopular thing - one of our best friends over there.

Take the broad-brush vitriol with a grain of salt. It's usually just a quick tempered response to something. We've all done that, haven't we?
The same goes when someone bashes you directly the times I've been lashed-out at, I've probably deserved it (just a little). I just shrug my shoulders.
Hope you stick around and post.

HEY !
The people I know and like here, and I, only address our vitriol to the ones who attack us, with the usual lib. sneering. That is nasty, and we don't hold with it...so we give 'em some lead.
That's all. We are respectful and appresiative of our allies, but anyone who's nasty to us is doing a wrong thing, and the insults, like 'cowboy" just make some of us boil...because I was always taught thet a "cowboy" was a pretty decent and noble individual...so we have to speak up.
That's all....so DO NOT GO.

We've got a few problem Freepers ignore them as best you can. Most people seem to be quite happy to have foreigners among us.

All of the recent negativity towards the British which I have seen on FR has been in response to headline articles in British newspapers.
Even MadIvan posted a thread the other day for example concerning the outrageous commentaries of one particular publication.
Everyday, I see evidence of the partnership and solidarity that the USA and Britain share in this current war. I see the images of coalition Troops and I am aware of the losses that the British have incurred even during this week.
Personally, I have frequently made numerous disparaging posts concerning Muslims in general. I do not really hate Muslims just because of what they believe in. I resent the lack of a public outcry by Muslims in general concerning the behavior of radical Muslims. Other than that I do not hate anybody as a group.
I do get caught up in my caustic remarks and sarcasm at times though. I think that I am not unique on FR.com in that respect.

I cannot imagine any one being anti-British on this site. Our mother country and the country that aided us in Iraq and Afghanistan. There maybe some loonies we talk about, as there are in this country. But any anti-British sentiment would be a strict minority.

The 'Brit-bashing' isn't too much different than the 'American-bashing'. You Brits have the commie/socialist types JUST LIKE we Americans DO. FReepers are E.O.B.s.
Have you found yourself under a Brit-bashing attack? If not, then don't take things personal. Just try to get in the right frame of mind and realize that the negative things being said are NOT done with a 'broad brush'.
You DO have FRiends across the pond.

Please ignore the morons amd accept my apology on behalf of my countrymen. You are no more responsible for the fringe in your country than we are for Michael Moore.

I think you're being overly sensitive to some of the extreme reactions to our election.

The Brits are bashing our President, we don't like that. Take a look at your media these days. Our President is not what they continue to say about him.
Now those ignorant liberals in the UK are bashing us conservative Americans....we don't like it either. What your liberal/socialist Brits continue to write about conservative Americans is pure rubbish.
You might want to ask Mark Steyn the why of our anger toward your country men.

You have no respect for absolutes, You rid Yourselves of royal tyranny and placed Yourselves beneath the boot of raw democracy. "I would as soon be ruled by one tyrant 3000 miles away, as by 50 million tyrants one mile away".
You jail Men Who defend themselves, and huddle in fear as thugs and thieves prey upon You. You are placing more emotion into the protection of foxes than into the defense of Your People.
You have nothing of Your own, You are subjects, We are Citizens. Free Citizens!
We would help You, but You would refuse Our help, We refuse Yours! Have a nice day!
