Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- Pine needle has been used as material of health foodstuffs from ancient times in Korea. According to "Hyangyakjipsongbang" (a medical encyclopedia) published in the 15th century in Korea, pine needle prevents aging, invigorates spirits and turns grey hair to black. The Korean people have used pine needles in steaming rice-cake and curing various diseases. The Natural Health Foodstuff Company under the Ministry of Forestry developed a pine needle tea last year through deep study of medical classics and ecological experiments. It also succeeded in making pine needle liquor which preserves its natural medicinal ingredients. The liquor contains vitamins C, B1, B2, B12, PP, A and E, and some 40 kinds of microelements including calcium and selenium, nucleic acid, essential amino acid and sexual hormone preparations. It is efficacious for the prevention and treatment of cancer, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, chronic colitis, rheumatic inflammation, cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis. It also prevents aging and promotes health. Kim Chang Gil, director of the company, told KCNA that the liquor is popular among people as it makes people feel well, promotes digestion by eliminating toxic elements from liver and increasing the liver function and removes swelling. It is also a good diuretic. The company (Tel: 00850-2-18111-381-8051.Fax: 00850-2-381-4416) has steadily made researches to make other kinds of pine needle foodstuffs.

So apparently non-food foodstuffs have become such a part of the North Korean diet that they are advertising the advantages of eating pine needles.

Oh the superiority of communism. Those poor South Koreans are stuck eating meat.

Collect pine needles, clean, boil, drink.

It was an effective treatment and preventative for scurvy back in the days before we could obtain a steady supply of fruits and veggie in the winter.

It also will clear out your sinuses and help your cough.

On the other hand you will be franticly brushing your teeth trying to get the taste out of your mouth.

Only the green banana and carrot remedy was worse.

As a certified herbalist, I am familiar with the medicinal properties of new growth Douglas fir needles. I do occasionally use them in my extracts, but I wouldn't eat them.

Pine needle extract was promoted in the Soviet Gulag,
particularly during the war years, but also later on.

For pine needles liquor (or any other flavored vodka) you need to collect the fresh needles, wash and dry them, then in a high-speed blender mix them with a decent vodka and put it away in a dark cold place to sediment. After appropriate time decant the liquid from the mush at the bottom. The taste, though, will be atrocious. If you do not use the blender, you may get away with simply keeping plant material under vodka in a closed vessel for very long time - sometimes months.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see an article that says, Common dirt found to be healthy replacement for Pine needle extract.

Due to the shortage of Pine needle extract, caused by the war mongering capitalist exploiters, scientists at the prestigious Kim Jong-Il research facility deep under Junche mountain have discovered that plain dirt is a good substitute and is eficatious and a welcome change of diet for most North Korean civilians.

Communists drink a drink made from the needles of the pine.
Boil’em till they’re greenish & add some lemon & some lime.
Strain‘em through a special cloth
To make a fragrant steamy broth
Just keep in mind that when you drink it, it will taste like turpentine.

I grew up on a tree farm ... we had about eleventy-jillion tons of pine needles around the place. If only I had known how good it was for me ...
