As a certified herbalist, I am familiar with the medicinal properties of new growth Douglas fir needles. I do occasionally use them in my extracts, but I wouldn't eat them.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see an article that says, Common dirt found to be healthy replacement for Pine needle extract.

Due to the shortage of Pine needle extract, caused by the war mongering capitalist exploiters, scientists at the prestigious Kim Jong-Il research facility deep under Junche mountain have discovered that plain dirt is a good substitute and is eficatious and a welcome change of diet for most North Korean civilians.
