Eating more plants linked to lower risk of dementia, even in older age

Eating a high-quality plant-rich diet that includes whole grains, vegetables, and fruits may prevent cognitive impairment — even when people start that diet in their late 50s and 60s, according to a new study.

"It's never too late to start eating healthy to lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias," said senior author Unhee Lim, a professor of population sciences at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in Honolulu, in an email. Older adults who cut many unhealthy foods from their diet over a decade had a 11% lower risk of Alzheimer's and dementia when compared with adults whose diets didn't change, Lim said.

However, people who increasingly ate more unhealthy plant-based options, such as refined grains and foods with added sugars, were about 25% more likely to develop some type of dementia at the end of 10 years, she said.

Does this include edibles?

Asking for a friend. I have never touched the stuff in any form.

I don't believe anything anymore. I have a well balanced diet that looks like the new pyramid. I'm 82. No meds...I cut bak on meat...wound up with low b12...went back to my meat diet...beef, pork and chicken...fish, shrimp, pickled herring..with all the trimmings...And a salad every day...with eggs, cheese, chick peas and/or black beans.

They are.

So are potato chips.

In fact most things you find in the snack aisle are "plant based."

RE: Twinkies are a plant. It’s true.

From LiveScience (after I heard it on a Christian discussion):

Tomatoes are a fruit.
Tomatoes develop from a single flower and contain seeds.

“...botanically speaking, bananas are classified as berries. They meet the scientific definition because they develop from a single flower with one ovary and have a fleshy, soft-layered pericarp (skin, pulp, and seeds). Conversely, strawberries are not true berries; they are considered “aggregate fruits”.

RE: So are potato chips.

I wonder why Lay’s Potato Chips now say “Made From Real Potatoes.”
Does anyone know?

I know a lot of “chocolate” items have been classified as “chocolatey” for the past few years.

So if Obama had shared some of his arugula with Joe Biden, we might have been under his Presidency instead of Trump’s.

Count our blessings.

Possibly because there are chips out there that are made from potato flakes and other stuff?

Many parts of a pine tree (specifically Pinus species) are edible and nutrient-rich, including the needles, inner bark, pollen, and seeds. Needles, rich in Vitamin C, are typically used for tea, while young, tender needles or spring growth can be used for infusions or flavoring. The edible inner bark (cambium) can be eaten raw or fried, and pine nuts (seeds) are highly nutritious.

Going ‘NuTz’ in your later years runs in my family. I grow my own and we eat a LOT of vegetables. (We’re both in our mid-60’s)

We have at least TWO veggies with our evening meal or one veggie side dish and a tossed salad, and ‘snacks’ are veggies & dip and a protein of some sort...string cheese, almonds, Greek yogurt, HB eggs, Cottage Cheese, an Apple & Peanut Butter, etc.

It’s not HARD to eat healthy, People! Put down the chips and soda pop! ;)
