According to the West Valley City Police Department, callers from West Valley City, Taylorsville and even Murray reported hearing the loud boom just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. Outdoor home surveillance camera footage from one residence also showed a flash of light.
Officers responded in the area of some reports and couldn’t locate any odd activity or objects that could have fallen. Then, the reports kept coming.
“If we get like a shots fired call then, you know, we’ll get several calls within a neighborhood or maybe a quarter mile,” Merritt said. “But to get calls that are coming in miles apart, it’s obvious this is something big, especially when it’s in different cities — Murray city, that’s several miles away from us so … don’t know what to say about that.”

In the extreme cold up here we get a phenomenon that sounds like pistol shots. It’s the water in the tree trunks freezing and causing it to crack open suddenly. Very unnerving if you don’t know what it is.

Trees in Georgia will explode in the winter if the temperature drops quickly. It is caused by trapped water freezing in a confined space.
You are correct. Saw one up in North Dakota once. It was just like that and lite up the badlands for a fraction of a second.

Years ago they were using howitzers to shoot down avalanches at a ski resort above Salt Lake City. The shooters missed the mountain and the shell hit a house in a suburb on the other side of the hill.

And we’re no strangers to deep cold spells here in either NY or NH.
But then again, the trees that grow here that are native are probably more resistant to that sort of things.
