In the extreme cold up here we get a phenomenon that sounds like pistol shots. It’s the water in the tree trunks freezing and causing it to crack open suddenly. Very unnerving if you don’t know what it is.

C.C. Happens a lot with birch and aspen trees. (See link!) I do not think you get a flash of light however. Meteorite maybe, or space junk.

Weird. I have never heard of that before.
And we’re no strangers to deep cold spells here in either NY or NH.
But then again, the trees that grow here that are native are probably more resistant to that sort of things.
