Are you brave enough to try this dish?
Maybe when pigs fry.
New York City epicures are devouring a “special” Ecuadorian delicacy, guinea pigs — better known stateside as a potential pet for kids — and hailing them as a “very delicious” feast.
At least that is the experience at the restaurant La Casa Del Cuy — literally “the house of guinea pig” — a culinary go-to in Corona, Queens, that grills and serves the rodent (cuy) whole, essentially every part but the “squeak.”
On a recent Monday evening, the house was packed with diners tearing into the 2½-pound animals, which can measure about 16 inches from snout to the tips of their outstretched toes. Pet-sized guinea pigs are typically smaller but can range from 2 to 3.5 pounds.
La Casa Del Cuy has become a fixture in Queens for roasting and serving the whole guinea pig or cuy whole — essentially every part but the “squeak.”

Do you have any Bat soup btw?
Ah, diversity.
Yum! Might do to decrease the rat population in the Big Apple, too...
Bat Soup extra charge!...............
The natives in South America raised Guinea Pigs’ like we do cattle before the Spanish came..............
Guinea Pig! The other white meat!..............
Has NYC made Apple Pie illegal yet? Seems like something they would do.
No thanks. My kids all had guinea pigs as pets when they were young. Couldn’t bring myself to eat one of these little squeakers. When they are first born they easily fit in the palm of your hand are fully furred out and ready to go! Soooo cute!
No soup for you!
Guinea pigs are among the animals protected by the Animal Welfare Act; but I don’t know about Peruvian ones...
I wonder where and how these are bred and raised.
Well, it ain't Haiti!.............
And the people whining about roast guinea pig have the option of not going to that particular restaurant. Some of them, I think, would only be satisfied if all American restaurants only ever served boiled beef and cabbage.
As in the days of Noah: men marrying men and eating and drinking, up to the day that Noah entered the ark!
I’ll never eat there!
I wonder if Rosie, Queen of Corona. ever cooked these?
Not the Vegans.............
I’d try that.
Do they at very least, remove those blackened pearls of roasted eyes from the Piggy heads?
**To get their money’s worth, a Cook may be better off butchering and preparing a Capybara, vs a Guinea Pig.
A Capybara is the largest rodent in the world,
typical height; 2 feet tall. Weight: 77 to 150 lbs (!!!!).
It’s called cuy, and it’s a local dish that dates back to the 12th century A.D., when the Incas ruled the Andes. Cuy is made with guinea pig. But in Peru, the guinea pigs is not a revered pet; it is revered meat on the dinner table, and has been for hundreds of years.
It’s an dish in Peru that’s been in this region hundreds of years before Colombus was even born.
Whenever I go to Peru I always make sure it’s NOT on the menu in any restaurants I eat.
I like beef, chicken or pork. We italians don’t eat guinea pig
