Atlantic writer complains about too many choices at the grocery store

Leave it up to The Atlantic to tell us we've got too many food choices in a grocery store, and for our own good, we ought to have less.

Leave it up to The Atlantic to tell us we've got too many food choices in a grocery store, and for our own good, we ought to have less.

That's pretty much what writer Adam Fleming wrote in his plaintive cry against too much choice at the grocery store.

On a recent afternoon, while running errands before I had to pick up my kids from school, I froze in the orange-juice aisle of a big-box store. So many different brands lay before me: Minute Maid, Simply, Tropicana, Dole, Florida’s Natural, Sunny D — not to mention the niche organic labels. And each brand offered juices with various configurations of pulp, vitamins, and concentrate. The sheer plenitude induced a kind of paralysis: Overwhelmed by the choices on offer, I simply could not make one. I left the store without any orange juice.

According to the American Time Use Survey, an average grocery trip takes more than 40 minutes. That may not sound like much, but the task can feel overwhelming and time-consuming in the midst of a busy day, especially because every trip consists of a plethora of decisions. Through this lens, what seems like a modern benefit — 100 different kinds of ice cream! Every imaginable chip flavor! Hot-dog buns sliced on the side or on the top! — can become a bit of a burden.

Cripes, of all the things to complain about.

We have this thing known as "Google," and we have subscriptions to publications such as Consumer Reports, which help consumers pare down to the best choices, if that's a big deal to him.

Because no one ever taught him any decision making skills.

It is not that difficult.

As the article said, that’s one reason I like Aldi’s. Fewer choices, speeds the shopping quite a lot.

Not that I want to shop at Aldi’s only. But it’s excellent for a large trip for basics every two weeks.

He needs to come to the four grocery stores I have to go to in order to find the things I used to be able to get in just one.

“I have the same problem whenever I walk into a gun store.”

I legitimately have that problem. No two people in my family can use the same ammo, for reasons which I don’t quite understand. So, I want to be nice.l, but I can’t do it without too many choices. We need to standardize. At this point, I have to look out for number one.

In the future we will see stories about no choice and no products at all.

Which is better? I can figure out which ones I want to buy from several options.

First world liberal b1tching and self loathing.

Nothing new really. Nothingburger story made out to seem like they don’t always do this. They always do this privilieged whining and moaning.

It’s obvious he hasn’t shopped, or doesn’t shop, much. It’s not brain surgery and when in doubt, I just buy the least expensive item, which I usually do anyway. Check the sales, make a list and go, or order online as I do now.

"Hot-dog buns sliced on the side or on the top! — can become a bit of a burden."

I'll send you some of the New England style from here in central NY State. They have all different brands. I bought a package of Ball Park's regular sliced hot dog rolls the other day, and when I opened them, two were totally distorted. On one, the bottom part of the roll was twisted up against itself. It looked like a dinosaur fossil whose head has been thrown back in the throes of agonizing death. The other roll which had been connected to it was pinched inward making both useless. I wrote the company and complained that their quality control sucks. I expect I'll be getting coupons for their other shit products as an apology.

I don't know how you feel, but I've never understood why no one can make a uniform package of hot dog rolls, so they are the same shape and size throughout. Either the tops are too thick, and the bottoms are razor thin, or they resemble a coffin...wide at the top, then tapering in at the bottom. It drives me nuts.

Teacher A: “I see the Fleming kids are walking around in their underwear again.”

Teacher B: “Yup. Apparently their dad can’t decide what they should wear.”

Teacher A: “I have a friend who works at IHOP. When Fleming comes in, they all know to not give him a menu. They just ask if he wants eggs or pancakes, and then tell him all they have is bacon. Otherwise, the guy will sit there for hours staring at the menu and walk away without ordering anything.”

Teacher B: *sniggers*

Frankly I was happy with one, single type of Triscuit back in the day, and balk at the dozens of choices out there now. I write for myself, however, not The Atlantic. And don’t get me started on Oreo cookies.

It really grates to see a professional writer use the word less rather than fewer. Where did these people go to school?

57 genders is a wonderful thing, but more than two brands of orange juice is just too damned confusing for the masses.
