NATIONAL FRENCH FRIED SHRIMP DAY

On December 21st, seafood lovers celebrate National French Fried Shrimp Day. Enjoyed all year long, this delicious dish delights many across the country.

#FrenchFriedShrimpDay

Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood.

The word prawn is used loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as jumbo shrimp. Some countries use the word prawn exclusively for all shrimp.

Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves the removal of the head, shell, tail, and sand vein. There are many ways to cook shrimp. Common methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sautéing, frying, and grilling.

Cooking time is delicate for shrimp and they are at their best when not over cooked.

A healthy food, shrimp is low in calories and high in levels of omega-3s, calcium, iodine, and protein. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system. *The preparation of the shrimp does impact the caloric count.

Shrimp FAQ

Q. What is the world’s largest shrimp?

A. The world’s largest species of shrimp is the zebra shrimp.

Q. What’s the difference between a shrimp and a prawn?

A. While both shrimp and prawns are crustaceans, there are several differences between the two. One of the more notable differences is that prawns primarily live in freshwater while shrimp primarily live in saltwater. Both animals have segmented bodies. However, each segment of the prawn overlaps the next segment while the head and tail segments overlap the torso on the shrimp. Another difference is the number of claws. Shrimp have two claws while prawns have three.

Oh hell yeah!

My wife makes a hell of a batter and I am the frymaster at the house. Going to fry up some shrimp and frog legs later today.

That and some remoulade to go with it.

Mmmm. Ever had a raw one? Has to be right out of the ocean, caught fresh and opened and eaten within minutes of removing from the water. Warm, salty and soooo sweet.

We used to go scalloping off of Scraggy Neck on Cape Cod. Most were taken home and cooked different ways but a few were eaten raw. A shear delight.

... some remoulade to go with it.

You have to try the Silver Springs cocktail sauce with horseradish, made near me. To die for.

Today’s adventure: Beau crafted a BEAUTIFUL Oak fireplace mantle for my BFF. It’s taken us a while to get it to her due to covid and all the other cr@p that’s gone on in the past few years. BUT - we got it to them today and installed it and it’s pretty spectacular!

Anyhow, since we were in town we stopped for lunch, but they weren’t quite open yet, so we went to the closest grocery store and they had FABULOUS sales on seafood for the upcoming New Year, so we loaded up with three kinds of shrimp and some scallops.

So, I’ll be celebrating Shrimp Day - but it’ll be next weekend.

Merry, Merry! Happy, Happy! :)
